Highland Update

Dementia-Friendly Aberfeldy Dementia-Friendly communities are not new, they exist in a number of countries. The main aim of a dementia-friendly community is to make sure people with dementia and their carers are empowered and enabled to remain part of their community, to maintain their identity and be treated with dignity and respect. Aberfeldy is a small town where a culture of kindness already exists so with a little effort, becoming a recognised dementia-friendly community and town is a possibility. The process involves learning a little about dementia and doing very simple and practical things that can make a massive difference to people living with dementia. An event was held in Aberfeldy on Tuesday 28th August. The purpose of this event was to establish if there was appetite within the community for Aberfeldy to work towards Dementia-Friendly status. The event was well attended with 72 people taking part. There were essentially two parts to the event. The first part explored already established dementia–friendly communities nationally and internationally. The second, a market stall section illustrated examples of support already available and 16 organisations were able to present their work in this area.

During the event there was clear support for taking the concept of Dementia-Friendly Aberfeldy forward and over the next few weeks an action plan will be developed outlining the next steps. If interested in supporting the group or if you would like more information please get in touch via the e-mail address [email protected]

Social Prescriber Role for the North My name is Kim MacBain and I am the new Social Prescriber for the North Locality. I moved to Blairgowrie and Rattray from two years ago and have made it my home. I previously worked at Blairgowrie Day Opportunities and through my position there I got to know the area really well. When I saw the job advertised I knew it was the job for me. I am a very social person and have come to love the area and through my previous role I knew there was already extensive and well run community groups and opportunities in the area. For the time being, I will be focusing on the Strathmore area of the North Locality with my colleague Audra Webster focusing on the Highland area.

My new role is to offer signposting and support to people to access and use community-based activities, to help address factors which contribute to health problems, with the aim of improving health and wellbeing, by providing a different response to the increasing demands on health and social care services. I have a generic remit and referrals can be considered for anyone aged 16+, who has lower level health or social care needs, but who would not meet the current eligibility for Community Care Services. I will link in closely with frontline Health and Social Care partnership staff and support referrals from a wide network of agencies to allow access to a wide range of supports for as many people as possible. It is a simple referral process via email or phone from GP’s and other agencies or you can self-refer. I look forward to hearing from anyone who would be interested in using the service. Being Prepared During the flood in 2015 great efforts were made as the local community worked with services to help save belongings and ensure people were taken care of. The 2018 Beast from the East was alleviated by mammoth efforts as people helped clear roads and help critical staff get to work. On a smaller scale people checked on neighbours and offered help where needed.

Services have plans in place which help them know about people who will need extra help. Those include the Council, NHS and the Fire Service. They also include bodies like electricity and water companies. All of these hold priority listings which help them reach those most in need. If you are a person with such a need or have friends or relatives in this position you might want to explore getting onto one or more priority listings.

Here are some links to some gas and electricity networks which will help illustrate what might be involved. SSEN Priority Services SGN Vulnerable Customers Scottish Water Additional Support There are also options where you can have a free home fire safety visit. This helps alert the fire service if you have any specific need it might help them to be aware of in an emergency. They will also help you check out a fire escape plan and fit free smoke alarms if you need them. Call 0800 0371 999 or text “Fire’ to 80800 from your mobile phone. There is also an online option at Home Safety Fire Visit

The volunteers can also signpost patients to other support within the localities and arrange appointments at Audiology for those patients requiring additional interventions. Unfortunately volunteers are unable to re-tube open fit aids which have the thin wire with tip in ear. It is important that hearing aid users bring along their yellow book as this is required to receive batteries. Samantha Batty, Head of Service NHS Tayside Audiology and Balance Service, said, “We are very pleased that volunteers have taken on this role with the support from the NHS Tayside’s audiology team. “With drop-in clinics taking place at various locations across the county it is hoped that hearing aid users will find this service helpful.” Perth & Kinross Hearing Aid Drop-in clinics for replacement batteries and re-tubing of moulds are held at the following locations: Blairgowrie Cottage Hospital, Last Wednesday of every month from 2pm – 4pm Vision PK, First Wednesday of every month from 10am – 12noon Library, Second Thursday of every month from 10am – 12noon Community Hospital, First Wednesday of every month from 1.30pm – 3.30pm Kinross- shire Day Centre, First Monday of every month from 11am – 12noon Willowbank Sheltered Housing, , Third Thursday of every other month from 10am – 12noon.
