You must have noticed that the earliest settlers in America were the Puritans and Calvinists, profoundly influenced by the Christian faith. As time passed by they got influenced by neo-classicism on the one hand and reason and commonsense on the other of the late seventeenth and eighteenth century European culture. Late in the eighteenth century the American colonies began to dislike their colonial status and on the continent the French rebelled against the ancien regime. In England poets such as William Wordsworth and S.T. Coleridge were writing in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century. They were later called the romantic poets. Romanticism began to influence poets in the United States also. -

Course Syllabus: MENG 6510: Eminent Writers, Ralph Waldo Emerson Instructor: Dr. John Schwiebert Office: EH #457 Phone: 626-6289 e-mail: [email protected] Office hours: XXX, or by appointment Course Overview Ralph Waldo Emerson was the central figure in the American Literary Renaissance of the middle nineteenth century. Numerous writers, American and worldwide, then and since, have felt his influence, and many of his ideas have become mainstays of the American vocabulary. For instance, Emerson popularized the term “self-reliance,” and much of what is best and most enduring in American intellectual history has affinities with ideas in his essays, poems, journals, and other writings. Emerson’s main interest, throughout his life, was in processes: natural and physical processes, creative processes, and spiritual; how to read, how to write, how to think and grow, and above all, how to live. In Emerson’s view nothing is static, least of all his own writings. A course in Emerson cannot properly be limited to Emerson as a “subject,” because for Emerson the “subject” was always living people, e.g, you and me, who are tasked with the challenge of creating their own lives out of a living past. Accordingly, we will treat Emerson’s works less as ends in themselves than as means to our own intellectual growth and creativity. I see Ellison's “American humanism” as a revitalization of the Latin notion of litterae humaniores that draws heavily on Gilded Age American literature and philosophy. For Ellison, American artists and intellectuals of that period were grappling with the country’s primary quandary after the Civil War: an inability to reconcile America’s progressive vision of humanism with the legacy left by chattel slavery and anti-black racism. -

There has been a critical acceptance of the thesis that Melville began as a Transcendentalist; then, as he grew older and presumably less wise in the romantic sense, he eschewed his early idealism and opted for an acceptance of moral expediency and com plicity. The beginning hypothesis of this study will be that Melville, although he could be said to share some of Transcendentalism's secondary ideas and attitudes, objected to many of the Transcend alists' most cherished beliefs. In fact, one can say that, rather than being a Transcendentalist writer, Melville was an anti Transcendentalist writer, constitutionally and intellectuall.y unable to accept the Transcendental view of life. In advancing the argument of this study, the critical works of Melvillean scholars will be considered for the light they may throw upon Transcendental influence on Melville's work. -
The Outsider's Edge: Geography, Gender, and Sexuality in the Local
Sociological Forum, Vol. 35, No. 3, September 2020 DOI: 10.1111/socf.12622 © 2020 Eastern Sociological Society The Outsider’s Edge: Geography, Gender, and Sexuality in the Local Color Movement1 Wendy Griswold,2 Anna Michelson3 Outsider status, especially multiple social marginalities, usually constitutes a burden. Certain combinations can be advantageous for cultural producers, however, especially when geographic marginality is part of the mix. The Local Color movement demonstrates the outsider’s edge. In mid-nineteenth century in America, print technology, reduced postal rates, and mass literacy led to the golden age of magazines. Their readers sought stories about the regional cultures that were disappearing in an industrializing nation. Local Color— fiction about places outside the northeast cultural heartland—met this demand. Local Color authors shared outsider identities—geography, gender, and sexuality—that characterized and shaped the movement. Com- parison with authors in the adjacent genres of Bestselling, Sentimental, and The Atlantic Monthly fiction reveals that multiple outsiderness (1) was not typical for authors of the period, and (2) advantaged women from the geographic periphery, especially those with unconventional sexual careers. INTRODUCTION: MULTIPLE MARGINALITIES, INTERSECTIONALITY, AND OUTSIDERNESS Since sociology focuses on power and the unequal distribution of resources and influence, sociologists tend to envision social relations as involving some social or institutional boundary separating one set of people from another: insiders vs. out- siders, center vs. periphery, elite vs. non-elite, dominant vs. subordinate, normative vs. deviant, majority vs. minority, conventional vs. unconventional. Although we recognize that some people move between the sets—the boundary spanners, the socially mobile, the trans—the line between the two remains clear. -

THE ESSENCE OF ECONOMIC REFORMS IN POST- REVOLUTION GEORGIA: WHAT ABOUT THE EUROPEAN CHOICE? Vladimer Papava* Georgian Foundation for Strategic and International Studies Several countries in the post-Soviet world have completed the transition to a European- type market economy and have been admitted to the European Union. For others—either partly or totally unsuccessful in transitioning—the question of whether or not this kind of market economy could be built is not even discussed. As to the potential of EU membership, such countries have either never set such a goal for themselves or, at best, are considering it in a long-term perspective. It is no secret that Georgia is not ready to join the EU in the near future. In view of continual official statements regarding Georgia’s striving toward Euro-Atlantic organisations (see Papava and Tokmazishvili, 2006), however, we should know where we are going. One of the most important aspects is the vector of Georgia’s economic development. If we see Georgia as part of Europe—even if not fully accepted until the distant future—Georgia must transform into a European-type market economy. THE EU’S ECONOMIC MODEL AND GEORGIA It is not easy to describe the EU’s economic model, which is still in formation (Fioretos, 2003). According to Albert (1991), the EU has been a battlefield of the two key models of capitalism, i.e., the Anglo-American and the “Rhenish” (German-Japanese) ones. -

Copyright © 2019 The Trustees of Reservations ADMINISTRATIVE INFORMATION PROVENANCE Transcendental manuscript materials were first acquired by Clara Endicott Sears beginning in 1918 for her Fruitlands Museum in Harvard, Massachusetts. Sears became interested the Transcendentalists after acquiring land in Harvard and restoring the Fruitlands Farmhouse. Materials continued to be collected by the museum throughout the 20th century. In 2016, Fruitlands Museum became The Trustees’ 116th reservation, and these manuscript materials were relocated to the Archives & Research Center in Sharon, Massachusetts. In Harvard, the Fruitlands Museum site continues to display the objects that Sears collected. The museum features four separate collections of significant Shaker, Native American, Transcendentalist, and American art and artifacts. The property features a late 18th century farmhouse that was once home to the writer Louisa May Alcott and her family. Today it is a National Historic Landmark. These papers were acquired by a combination of purchases and donations up through the 1980s.
