At Home in the Gardens YATES GARDENS in Old Town was conceived by the Carr Company in pre-war Alexandria. Building began in the 500 block of Franklin Street in 1941 and finished in the 900 block of South Fairfax Street in 1964. The focal point was “Spring Gardens” a Tavern on the 400 block of Franklin Street, now a private residence, often visited by George Washington in the earliest days of our town. I’ve been fortunate to both live and work in Yates Gardens. Solidly built brick homes with parking, many of which now boast modern additions.

Photo of the Week In August, families fit in last weekends at the beach. College students gather with friends before heading away to school. Parents buy school supplies and clothes for their children in anticipation of returning to the classroom. The summer, and August in particular, can be a low point for Alexan- dria’s businesses. Fortunately, local business associations are partnering with Visit Alexandria and our city government to provide boosts to both retail stores and restaurants in Alexandria this month. First up is the annual Sidewalk Sale this weekend, where shops and boutiques throughout Old Town and Del Ray will display deeply dis- counted wares in front of and inside their stores. This Saturday and Sunday, almost 70 stores throughout the city will participate in this long-running summer extravaganza that is spearheaded by their busi- ness associations: Old Town Boutique District, Old Town Business Asso- ciation, Old Town North and Del Ray Business Association.
