Discussion About Edwardian/Pulp Era Science Fiction
Science Fiction Book Club Interview with Jess Nevins July 2019 Jess Nevins is the author of “the Encyclopedia of Fantastic Victoriana” and other works on Victoriana and pulp fiction. He has also written original fiction. He is employed as a reference librarian at Lone Star College-Tomball. Nevins has annotated several comics, including Alan Moore’s The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, Elseworlds, Kingdom Come and JLA: The Nail. Gary Denton: In America, we had Hugo Gernsback who founded science fiction magazines, who were the equivalents in other countries? The sort of science fiction magazine that Gernsback established, in which the stories were all science fiction and in which no other genres appeared, and which were by different authors, were slow to appear in other countries and really only began in earnest after World War Two ended. (In Great Britain there was briefly Scoops, which only 20 issues published in 1934, and Tales of Wonder, which ran from 1937 to 1942). What you had instead were newspapers, dime novels, pulp magazines, and mainstream magazines which regularly published science fiction mixed in alongside other genres. The idea of a magazine featuring stories by different authors but all of one genre didn’t really begin in Europe until after World War One, and science fiction magazines in those countries lagged far behind mysteries, romances, and Westerns, so that it wasn’t until the late 1940s that purely science fiction magazines began appearing in Europe and Great Britain in earnest. Gary Denton: Although he was mainly known for Sherlock Holmes, Arthur Conan Doyle also created the Professor Challenger stories like The Lost World. -
Orwellian Methods of Social Control in Contemporary Dystopian Literature
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by Repositorio Documental de la Universidad de Valladolid FACULTAD de FILOSOFÍA Y LETRAS DEPARTAMENTO de FILOLOGÍA INGLESA Grado en Estudios Ingleses TRABAJO DE FIN DE GRADO A Nightmarish Tomorrow: Orwellian Methods of Social Control in Contemporary Dystopian Literature Pablo Peláez Galán Tutora: Tamara Pérez Fernández 2014/2015 ABSTRACT Dystopian literature is considered a branch of science fiction which writers use to portray a futuristic dark vision of the world, generally dominated by technology and a totalitarian ruling government that makes use of whatever means it finds necessary to exert a complete control over its citizens. George Orwell’s 1984 (1949) is considered a landmark of the dystopian genre by portraying a futuristic London ruled by a totalitarian, fascist party whose main aim is the complete control over its citizens. This paper will analyze two examples of contemporary dystopian literature, Philip K. Dick’s “Faith of Our Fathers” (1967) and Alan Moore’s V for Vendetta (1982-1985), to see the influence that Orwell’s dystopia played in their construction. It will focus on how these two works took Orwell’s depiction of a totalitarian state and the different methods of control it employs to keep citizens under complete control and submission, and how they apply them into their stories. KEYWORDS: Orwell, V for Vendetta , Faith of Our Fathers, social control, manipulation, submission. -

The Traveller Chronicle Short Fiction
The Science Fiction In Traveller A Reader’s Guide to Traveller Role-Playing Fiction By Shannon Appelcline Far Future Enterprises 2016 Preface Award-winning reviewer Shannon Appelcline (Designers & Dragon) investigates the science-fiction literature that shaped the structure and content of the Traveller science-fiction role-playing game. He reviews and discusses the broad expanse of SF that influenced Marc Miller as he designed the massive background universe of Traveller, and then gives equal consideration to the novels and short stories that were inspired by Traveller. Introduction I think that one of the best ways to prepare yourself for a roleplaying game is to immerse yourself in its fiction. It’s a way to gain a visceral, unconscious understanding of a game world — allowing you to instinctively respond to your player’s action in the context of a real universe. So, when I decided to run a Mongoose Traveller game in 2009, I started reading. Marc Miller has listed a number of novels that influenced Traveller over the years, and I began with some of those — including classics from the ‘50s and ‘60s by authors that I was largely unfamiliar with, like H. Beam Piper, E.C. Tubb, and Keith Laumer. They helped me to gain a better appreciation not just for Traveller’s universe, but also for science fiction’s history. I could have read scores more “inspirational” novels, but instead I moved on to the novels actually written about the Traveller universe. Though Traveller doesn’t have the depth of D&D’s fiction line, I was happy to discover that there were about a dozen novels that were “Traveller” to various degrees.
