Pray, too, for a young man from the parish who is entering a religious community in August. Pray for vocations! God Bless! Catholic Ministries Appeal I thank all who made a gift or pledge to the 2014 Catholic Ministries Appeal. As of July 1st, 463 parishioners have pledged $240,633.00 to the Appeal. Msgr. John J. McCann Th e funds raised in the Catholic Ministries Appeal make possible some of the many good things that happen in the name of Christ throughout the Diocese of Rockville Centre and through the parish sharing aspect of the Appeal here in St. Mary’s, too. I ask those who have not yet made a gift to the 2014 Appeal to consider doing so even if you have never made a gift before. Whatever you are able to do will be deeply appreciated. Seminarian Jiha Lim Eucharistic Adoration Th is is the last week of Jiha’s ten week stay in St. Mary’s. Th is Th ursday Next Sunday he will begin a few weeks of vacation before returning to St. Joseph’s Seminary (Dunwoodie) in 3:00 to 8:00 PM Yonkers to begin his third year of theological studies. If in the Chapel off the south side of the Church all goes well, he will be ordained a priest for the Diocese of Rockville Centre in June, 2016. Come spend some time in prayer! Some of the things Jiha did while with us are: teaching Pray for peace! in the Elementary School, connecting with High School Pray for religious freedom! students in the Campus Ministry Offi ce, leading the Pray for vocations! Children’s Liturgy of the Word at the Sunday 9:00 AM Mass, visiting at the Bristal on the South Service Road of the Expressway to bring Communion to the residents on Wednesday mornings, observing baptisms, funerals and weddings. On Tuesdays and Th ursdays he off ered a refl ection on the Scripture readings of the day following Communion. And there was always applause! We have told him not to expect that to continue after he is ordained. He spent much of his youth in or around the nearby Dominican church of Santa Maria Novella. Though he lacked education and the Dominicans were scholars, and though he had trouble speaking and the Dominicans were preachers, he joined the Order at age 17. • He studied in Pisa and Florence in Italy, and received his degree in theology from the University of Paris. In one letters, he said that his speech impediment threatened to limit his vocation; it was cured through the intervention of Saint Catherine of Siena, and he spent 12 years as a preacher in Venice, Italy. • Prior of the Dominican house at Santa Maria Novella. Additionally, our donors will receive enhanced tax benefits. Obviously, an increase in our annual revenue will not only increase the number of Pullman Foundation Scholarships granted each year, but it will also enable us to expand our educational support services for our scholars. For example, we are currently exploring ideas on how to encourage our scholars to gain practical experience during college through internships or similar positions, believing that such experiences will help them better transition into their chosen careers.

Foreword In our pluralistic age we recognize many traditions have special gifts to make to a rich, well-balanced spirituality for our time. My own life has shown me the spiritual tradition stemming from St. Dominic, like that from his contemporary St. Francis, provides ever fresh insights. No tradition, however, can be understood merely by looking at its origins. We must see it unfold historically in those who have been formed by that tradition in many times and situations and have furthered its development. To know its essential strength, we need to see it tested, undergoing deformations yet recovering and growing. Therefore, I have tried to survey its eight centuries to give some sense of its chronology and its individual personalities, and of the inclusive Dominican Family. I have aimed only to provide a sketch to encourage readers to use the bibliography to explore further, but with regret I have omitted all documentation except to indicate the source of quotations.
