“What It Means To Be A Muslim From the Inside”

Monday, July 10th 7:00 PM Cabrini Room

Today, it is difficult to avoid images, stories, or news coverage coming out of the Middle East. Often, this is our only exposure to Islam. The question must be asked, “How do Muslims in the Middle East really live?” From his experience of living in Cairo and his study of Islam, Fr. Luke will provide a glimpse into the lived reality of Egyptian Muslims. He will explore what drives their religious belief in Islam and how they apply that faith in their daily lives.

Fr. Luke Barder, OP, is a Dominican of the Central Province and a student of Arabic and Islamic Studies in Cairo, Egypt. He resides at the Dominican Convent of Our Lady of the Rosary in the heart of Cairo, which is home to the Dominican Institute for Oriental Studies (IDEO). In addition to his daily studies, he assists IDEO in the editing of texts, and frequently attends seminars and conferences at foreign and Muslim institutions of study and research throughout the city. That is quite a dramac development.” It’s not just emoons, as increasingly people are prepared to spend substanal sums of money on their pets. The Chicago Tribune arcle reported that one pet owner, Ernie Yamich, spent $2,100 on the funeral costs for his pet, aer having spent more than $7,000 on medical treatment trying to save his dog’s life. Catholic, Then Muslim, Anthony, he came to repent of his decision to abandon the Church. Then Catholic, Then That night, he had a dream in which St. Antoninus appeared to him. As a result of that myscal conversaon, Bl. Anthony decided to repent of his choices and to return to Martyred Christ even though he knew Muslims would murder him for his apostasy. Anthony sought out a Dominican priest ministering to Chrisans in Tunis and tearfully confessed his sins. On Palm Sunday of AD 1460, the revert publicly asked his fellow Catholics there in Tunis for their forgiveness. They gladly gave it and Bl. Anthony was immediately readmied to the . Wanng to witness to Christ more fully, he waited for the caliph to hold a public procession through the city. At that, Bl. Anthony fearlessly took up a place before the caliph's palace proudly dressed in his black and white Dominican habit and loudly proclaimed his faith. The furious caliph immediately ordered Bl. Anthony be stoned to death. Four days later, on Holy Thursday, in the Year of Our Lord, 1460, Bl. Anthony was murdered. Catholic Genovese merchants sojourning in Tunis at that me, understanding the importance of Bl. Anthony's martyrdom, paid an outrageous amount of money to the caliph to recover his body and returned it to his hometown of Blessed Anthony Rivoli. St. Antoninus, in turn, had been a student of Bl. John Dominici, a great reformer of the Dominican order. Though he enjoyed St. Antoninus' friendship, Bl. Anthony grew dissasfied with his apostolate and asked for a transfer to Sicily. En route there, his ship was captured by Moorish (ie, Northern African Muslim) pirates, and along with his fellow passengers, was taken to Tunis. Apparently, for some unknown reason, the caliph of Tunis took a liking to Bl. Anthony and treated him with relave respect and kindness. For one reason or another, perhaps because of Bl. Anthony's public preaching, he was ulmately put into prison and put on bread and water. Weakened by this diet, he soon collapsed. In order to save his life, he chose to renounce Christ and become Muslim. His transformaon to Islam was total and complete. In fact, he publicly and wholehearted gave himself over to translang the Koran into Lan. The caliph adopted Bl. Anthony who arranged for his marriage to a Turkish noblewoman. Internaonal news might travel at the speed of light now in the 21st century but, back in the 15th century, people were dependent upon vising sailors for news about the world.
