He spent much of his youth in or around the nearby Dominican church of Santa Maria Novella. Though he lacked education and the Dominicans were scholars, and though he had trouble speaking and the Dominicans were preachers, he joined the Order at age 17. • He studied in Pisa and Florence in Italy, and received his degree in theology from the University of Paris. Priest. In one letters, he said that his speech impediment threatened to limit his vocation; it was cured through the intervention of Saint Catherine of Siena, and he spent 12 years as a preacher in Venice, Italy. • Prior of the Dominican house at Santa Maria Novella. Correspondent with Blessed Clara Gambacorta, giving her advice on her work to restore discipline to Dominican nuns. Additionally, our donors will receive enhanced tax benefits. Obviously, an increase in our annual revenue will not only increase the number of Pullman Foundation Scholarships granted each year, but it will also enable us to expand our educational support services for our scholars. For example, we are currently exploring ideas on how to encourage our scholars to gain practical experience during college through internships or similar positions, believing that such experiences will help them better transition into their chosen careers.

Foreword In our pluralistic age we recognize many traditions have special gifts to make to a rich, well-balanced spirituality for our time. My own life has shown me the spiritual tradition stemming from St. Dominic, like that from his contemporary St. Francis, provides ever fresh insights. No tradition, however, can be understood merely by looking at its origins. We must see it unfold historically in those who have been formed by that tradition in many times and situations and have furthered its development. To know its essential strength, we need to see it tested, undergoing deformations yet recovering and growing. Therefore, I have tried to survey its eight centuries to give some sense of its chronology and its individual personalities, and of the inclusive Dominican Family. I have aimed only to provide a sketch to encourage readers to use the bibliography to explore further, but with regret I have omitted all documentation except to indicate the source of quotations.
