The Austrian, a ski instructor from Innsbruck in Tyrol, alighted onto the platform at Albertville station on a beautiful morning in November 1935 with just a trunk and a pair of skis for luggage. The first season went well and, having fallen in love with the area, Erwin Eckl decided to stay and set up his own business in the hotel industry. So he bought a barn with his father-in-law (he married a young woman from Lyon, Hélène Comte, on 8 August 1936) and they agreed to turn it into a hotel. Thus, the first hotel in Les Saisies opened its doors in 1936. The ski esortr of Les Saisies was born! The first ski lift in Les Saisies was built by Raymond Clément-Guy, in a place known as ‘Les Pémonts’, with materials from the 20s. The French ski school in Les Saisies was set up in 1937 by Erwin Eckl and Georges Braisaz. By 1968, there were 13 instructors. The Bisanne chairlift was built in the 1963-1964 season; the Periots, Soleil, Chamois, Palette, Boëtet, Gentianes and Marmotte chairlifts were built between 1971 and 1977. In 1985, Claude Mathaly increased the number of ski lifts and connected them to Crest-Voland: Espace Cristal! Régie des Remontées Mécaniques, a ski lift management company, was created in 1998 to differentiate the skiing business and enable the development and refurbishment of the ski area. In 2005, Espace Cristal was replaced by Espace Diamant with the resorts of Les Saisies/Hauteluce, Crest-Voland/Cohennoz, Notre Dame de Bellecombe, Flumet, and Praz-sur-Arly. The Natura 2000 site of Tourbière des Saisies, Beaufortain, Val d’Arly was listed as a Regional Nature Reserve in 2013. The Signal des Saisies watersports and leisure centre and ‘le 1650’ bar, restaurant and bowling alley opened in 2014. Franck Piccard, a native of Les Saisies and an icon of the resort, enjoyed a successful sporting career (bronze medal in downhill and gold in super-G at the Calgary Olympics in 1988, silver medal in downhill at the Albertville Olympics in 1992).     Evaluation du SCOT : synthèse des retours des communes et des partenaires INTRODUCTION Durant l’été 2017, un questionnaire d’évaluation du SCOt a été transmis à l’ensemble des communes d’Arlysère, afin de recueillir leurs avis quant à la mise en œuvre du SCOT, au travers des PLU notamment. Dans la mesure où la révision des PLU intégrant la mise en compatibilité avec le SCOT est à cette date à des stades relativement différents (du PLU « SCOT compatible » depuis plusieurs années au PLU ayant tout juste délibéré pour engager la révision), ce questionnaire a été décliné sous différentes versions (voir page ci-après), selon l’état d’avancement des PLU. Un questionnaire a également été adressé aux partenaires ayant eu à « utiliser » le SCOT. Le présent document constitue une synthèse des retours obtenus. Cette synthèse a d’autant plus de sens que la quasi-totalité des communes et partenaires ont retourné leur analyse. Qu’ils en soient ici remerciés. A noter que les enseignements tirés de ce travail concerne la perception de la mise en oeuvre du SCOT, à mettre en parallèle des analyses chiffrées « objectives » réalisées par ailleurs. Ils permettent de mesurer le niveau d’appropriation du SCOT, le «capital confiance » dont il bénéficie ou non. Il permet également de confirmer, ou d’infirmer, les sujets qui posent difficulté, et ceux qui font consensus, et de formaliser les attentes ou propositions issues de l’expérience de terrain des différents acteurs interrogés. Tourism is an industry that can’t be relocated overseas, and thus represents a vital asset for the future. Since 2007, the public authorities (national government, Regional Councils, and General Councils), elected officials, labour and management groups, and all players involved in social issues (C.A.F., C.P.A.M., M.S.A., subsidized housing, occupational health services) have mobilized to promote seasonal employment as a priority for the department, notably including it in a goals charter. With this framework in mind, and to ensure that seasonal workers « have a good season », the regions of Pays du Mont Blanc and Chablais have mobilized to welcome these employees by means of the Chamonix « Espace Saisonnier » (centre for seasonal workers) and the Chablais « Point Accueil Saisonnier » (information desk for seasonal workers). On a larger scale, Haute-Savoie strives to inform seasonal workers more thoroughly by publishing this guide. Here, employees and employers will find answers to a variety of questions that may concern them, including training, employment, working conditions, health, and housing.

Although there is no Snowtrain this winter, Savoie Mont Blanc is still easily accessible by train: take the Eurostar to Paris or Lille, then the TGV to Chambéry or Annecy (it takes less than 3 hours from Paris to Chambéry and less than 4 hours for Annecy).
