This is the third time in 2014 that Corey has earned this honour and it is once again a well deserved one. He might have only turned 12 a couple of months ago but he walked like a veteran, his time taking over a minute off Kyle Swan's club record of 55:18 (actually set when Kyle was only 11 so it was pretty outstanding itself). Corey Dickson last Saturday at Middle Park - a young walker with a big future WHAT'S COMING UP The Victorian 50km championship will be the centrepiece four our next VRWC races next Sunday. This must be entered via the AV portal http://athsvic.org.au/event/2014-av-walk-series-50km-walk/ and it is open to all currently registered Athletics Victoria walkers. This meet also includes a Racewalking Australia 50km Championship for Women - any female walker who is a member of one of our racewalking clubs can participate - as well as a VRWC 35km club championship for the Ray Smith Trophy (again, open to both men and women). And we've even got an Open 6 Hour walk for any ultra walkers keen for a hitout ahead of our 24 Hour race next month. Remember that VRWC entries can be taken on the day or more preferably via our VRWC online entry panel http://www.vrwc.org.au/wp1. VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 6 SEPTEMBER Our VRWC races on Saturday were very well attended with 57 competitors testing themselves out over various distances in wonderful early spring conditions. As is usual at the end of the season, some of our younger walkers tested themselves out over longer distances but none better than 12 year old Corey Dickson and 13 year old Hayden Walmsley who both successfully completed the longest event on offer - the 10km. Corey might have only turned 12 a couple of months ago but he walked like a veteran, recording a wonderful 53:56, taking over a minute off Kyle Swan's club record of 55:18 (actually set when Kyle was only 11). Hayden, who was our walker of the week last week, also walked fanastically for his final time of 1:00:48. Further down in distance in the 5km, Adam Garganis (22:56) and Reese Walmsley (23:50) also showed good late season form. And how can you go past Heather Carr - now that she has turned 65, she is rewriting the club records there - this week a W65 3km record with her time of 16:30. Race results follows. Full lapsplits can be checked at http://vrwc.org.au/wp1/?page_id=261. 10km Open 1. Karyn O'Neill 1:08:56 Emily Swan DQ 1. Stuart Kollmorgen 51:08 2. Her 8 th place time of 1:30:58 is her 6th qualifier and she leads the chase for the remaining two women's spots behind Rachel Tallent who was selected in February. As the 20km qualifying period finished on Sunday, the Australian selectors are meeting this week to select the remaining two women's 20km spots and the remaining two men's 20km spots. Regan is one of 5 women in the running, with qualifying performances shown below. It is a shame that only two of our three sub-1:30 qualifiers can be selected. 20km Women (1:36:00) Regan Lamble V 1:29:33 Rome, Italy 07-May-2016 1:30:34 Rio Maior, POR 09-Apr-2016 1:30:45 Melbourne 13-Dec 2015 1:30:58 La Coruna, ESP 28-May-2016 1:32:26 Takahata, Jpn 25-Oct 2015 1:32.51 Melbourne 30-Aug 2015 Beki Smith N 1:29:49 Rome, Italy 07-May-2016 1:32:49 Adelaide 21-Feb-2016 1:34:35 Adelaide 22-Feb-2015 Tanya Holliday S 1:29:56 Rome, Italy 07-05-2016 1:32:16 Adelaide 21-Feb-2016

This was the only A qualifier done on the day in the horrendous conditions and it was her third win in a row in this annual championship. This confirmed her Olympic spot and was a dominant display. This week, I am going to balance the equation and announce my walker of the week as Jared Tallent. Jared and Claire flew out on the Sunday morning after their heroics in Hobart and both contested 20km races a week later in what was a big weekend carnival of walking in Chihuahua in Mexico – and both were successful, earning silvers in their respective events. Jared fought it out with Eder Sanchez of Mexico, taking silver in 1:21:50 while Claire fought it out with Portuguese walker Ines Henriques, also taking silver in 1:33:21. You can read about both their performances later in the newsletter. Jared and Claire with their second prize cheques in Chihuahua, along with Satoshi Yanagisawa (photo from Satoshi) MORE WALKERS ADDED TO THE AUSTRALIAN OLYMPIC TEAM With the Australian T&F Olympic Trials completed last weekend in Melbourne, Athletics Australia has now released the names of the next group of Olympic selections and the walkers are to the fore.

The main contenders were all in action at Fawkner Park (Melbourne) at the Australian and Oceania Roadwalk Championships. Consider these outstanding performances • 23 year old Victorian Jemima Montag recorded a 2 minute PB to win the Open Women’s 20km Championship with a time of 1:28:50. This is the second fastest ever done by an Australian and the fastest ever on home soil. This makes it back to back wins for Jemima, who is already an Olympic selection after her win in the 2020 edition of this championship. • 20 year old Queenslander Katie Hayward took second place with 1:30:41.While not a PB (her PB of 1:29:25 was done in 2019, as an 18 year old), it was yet another consistent performance from her and one which bettered the Olympic qualifying standard of 1:31:00. • 19 year old Victorian Rebecca Henderson took third place with 1:32:12. It was her first ever 20km race and what a way to start.
