TIM'S WALKER OF THE WEEK

My Walker of the Week this time around goes to 12 year old Corey Dickson who walked an incredible 53:56 in our VRWC 10km roadwalk last Saturday at Middle Park. This is the third time in 2014 that Corey has earned this honour and it is once again a well deserved one. He might have only turned 12 a couple of months ago but he walked like a veteran, his time taking over a minute off Kyle Swan's club record of 55:18 (actually set when Kyle was only 11 so it was pretty outstanding itself).

VRWC ROAD RACES, MIDDLE PARK, SATURDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

Our VRWC races on Saturday were very well attended with 57 competitors testing themselves out over various distances in wonderful early spring conditions. As is usual at the end of the season, some of our younger walkers tested themselves out over longer distances but none better than 12 year old Corey Dickson and 13 year old Hayden Walmsley who both successfully completed the longest event on offer - the 10km. Corey might have only turned 12 a couple of months ago but he walked like a veteran, recording a wonderful 53:56, taking over a minute off Kyle Swan's club record of 55:18 (actually set when Kyle was only 11). Hayden, who was our walker of the week last week, also walked fanastically for his final time of 1:00:48. Further down in distance in the 5km, Adam Garganis (22:56) and Reese Walmsley (23:50) also showed good late season form. And how can you go past Heather Carr - now that she has turned 65, she is rewriting the club records there - this week a W65 3km record with her time of 16:30. Race results follows. Full lapsplits can be checked at http://vrwc.org.au/wp1/?page_id=261.

GRAEME NICHOLLS LAP OF THE LAKE, BALLARAT, SUNDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

Thanks to Sarah Brennan for the latest results from the Ballarat Race Walking Club in country Victoria. Her report:

Six members of the BRWC competed in the 2014 Graeme Nicholls Lap of the Lake early on Father’s Day morning. The event was combined with a Best O Lake event, so the walkers had a chance to put some runners to the test! That is exactly what Ross Darlow did – the 15yo storming home in an amazing time of 27:42 for the 6km course. Fastest female went to Jemma Peart in an impressive 33:59. The winner of the handicap (and the enormous trophy!) was 11yo Alanna Peart, who once again proved her talent in a fantastic maiden time of 35:07. Special mention to Kasey Bishop & Jessika Bridges, both who walked strongly to claim big PBs. Well done also to Kayla Bridges – who, despite being the sole 3km racewalking competitor, still managed to walk a 7 sec PB. Graeme Nicholls Lap of the Lake Handicap (6km) 1. MEXICAN ROADWALK CHAMPS, VERA CRUZ, MEXICO, 2-3 SEPTEMBER

Horacio Nava, Monica Equihua, and Christian Berdeja won their respective Mexican roadwalk championships last weekend in Vera Cruz, testing out the circuit that will be used for the Central American Games in that city later this year. For Nava, a 50km specialist, the 20km win was a strong one, his time of 1:23:01 seeing hime over a minute clear of Daniel Gómez with 1:24:09. In the women's 20km, Monica Equihua won with 1:36:05, ahead of Yanelli Caballero 1:38:23 and Andrea Martínez 1:41:44. In the 50 km, Cristhian Berdeja won with 4:03:10, not far ahead of the other medallists Omar Zepeda 4:03:30 and Jose Leyer 4:03:43, very close. 5TH INTERNATIONAL SPRINT TRIATHLON WALKING, VEENENDAAL, NETHERLANDS, SAT 30 AUG

Thanks to Dutch team coach Frank van Ravensberg for photos, report and race results from thee annual International Sprint Triathlon, held a week ago in Veenendaal. What a great idea!

MIROSLAV URADNIK IS THE WINNER OF THE 5TH SPRINT TRIATHLON IN RACE WALKING

Miroslav Uradnik has made a strong impression at the 5th International Sprint Triathlon in Race Walking in Veenendaal (the Netherlands). It rarely happens that a race walker walks with the technique and speed he showed during this sprint triathlon, which included the distances 1 mile (1609 m), 1000 m and 1500 m. In a terrific style, the 18 year old Slovakian completed the 3 distances, breaking three track records and three meet records. Even more interesting was the question of whether Uradnik would beat one or more all time bests in the Netherlands. First he broke the 1 mile best mark (6.29,4) by nearly 9 seconds and brought the record back to 6.20,6. From that moment all eyes were focused on the 1000m. Would Uradnik be able to break the 3.43,55 best mark, set in 1979? Yes, he could. He walked in a speed over 16 km in an hour and broke the record with a margin of three seconds (3.40,6). His 1500m time (6.01,5) was then more than sufficient to win the sprint triathlon for the second consecutive time.

There were also excellent performances by the Dutch walkers. Colin Versteeg set on his home track two Dutch all time best junior performances: 1 mile in 7.33,6 (the old mark was 7.56,33) and 1500m in 7.07,5 (old 7.10,0). In the 1000m the 19 year old athlete from VAV Veenendaal was, with 4.16.6, only a few seconds slower than his personal best. For second place in the sprint triathlon the Dutch indoor champion had to fight a strong battle with Dutch 50km champion Rob Tersteeg. Tersteeg showed an amazing speed for a long distance athlete by finishing the 1000 m in 4.17,2, beating his personal best by nearly 20 seconds. On every distance Versteeg and Tersteeg walked some stages together, although Versteeg beated his opponent every time with a small margin. So Versteeg ended up as second and Tersteeg as third.

For the first time since 2010 the female race saw a victory for the Netherlands. Anne van Andel surprised with sharp results on the mile and the 1000m. Her 8.08,3 for the mile was even the fastest time ever by a Dutch woman. In the 1000m she walked under 5 minutes for the first time with 4.45,3. A time like that hasn't been walked by a Dutch woman in the last 30 years.

The rainy conditions were not very fine, but they didn't affect the results. This year 25 participants from 4 countries came to Veenendaal, just missing the record from 2013 when 26 participants came to the 4th sprint triathlon.

Result (1 mile - 1000 m - 1500 m - total points) Men: 1. Miroslav Uradnik 1996 VSC Dukla Banska Bystrica (Slovakia) 6.20.6 - 3.40,6 - 6.01,5 699,07 points 2. YOUTH DEVELOPMENT LEAGUE FINAL, ALEXANDER STADIUM, BIRMINGHAM, 6 SEPTEMBER

Thanks to Mark Wall for the results and race report from the English Youth Development League Final in Birmingham. He explains:

This initiative is in its second year. Regretably this clashed with another couple of event over the weekend. This was unfortunate as this was on the calendar for the last 12 months. Readers may be unaware walks are not part of the league set up in the UK. The YDL is a national league for 13, U/15. U/17 and U/20, with the two younger and two older age groups paired together on competition days (Saturday: U/13 & U/15, Sunday: U/17 & U/20).

There were three separate events, one for each age group, I must say an impressive solo time trial by Callum as he quickly lapped Charlotte. More than one of us did comment that he reminded us of Dane Bird-Smith in his style and mode of progression. The Wilkinsons and Phipps saw family doubles. A strong Welsh turnout and a few newcomers. Ellen Vahey was the youngest in her age group, some in the ACT may recall her from winnining a Little Athletics title a couple of years ago when her family lived there whilst dad, Professor shaun Vahey, was on the staff at ANU.

FRENCH RACEWALKS, BERNOUVILLE, FRANCE, SUNDAY 7 SEPTEMBER

Thanks to Emmanuel Tardi for these results. He was in Bernouville (a small city of 311 people 100kmin the west of Paris for a racewalking competition with 10km, 20km and 50km walks for men and women . He tells me that the lap was 2km long and was a little difficult because of a hill and road camber. There were 35 walkers overall with the 50km being weon by Spanish walker Julian Iglesias (5:26:19) ahead of Sandrine Eichholtzer who crossed the finish line in excellent time of 5:35:00. It is not just the big prestigious walking events that make our sport - it is the many smaller meets that provide the breeding ground from which our sport flourishes.

INTERNATIONAL RACEWALKING MEET, DRUSKININKAY, LITHUANIA, SUNDAY 6 SEPTEMBER

Marius Žiukas and Brigita Virbalytė were the winners of the 22nd edition of the International Racewalk Meet in Druskininkay last Saturday, the meet also doubling as the Lithuanian Championships. The event brought together 115 national walkers as well as athletes from Belarus, Latvia and Poland. Thanks to omarchador http://omarchador.blogspot.pt/2014/09/22-meeting-internacional- de.html) for this race report.

Lots of interesting bits and pieces for us this week.

• First of all, a great interview with Australia's Jared Tallent by Rob Sears, the man behind the Focus4Fitness website - see http://www.focus4fitness.co.uk/#!A-Twilight-Walk-inspired-In-The-Spotlight-withJared-Tallent/c1u92/F6C022C6-7A18- 4535-8A7E-2BCB49962724

• And also from the same English website, a great page on Strength Training For Walking, also put together by Rob Sears: http://www.focus4fitness.co.uk/#!Strength-Training-For-Walking/c1u92/880F40BD-91D9-4509-9674-C6036DD9605A

• And now to The New Yorker magazine for an article titled Why Walking Helps Us Think by Ferris Jabr. Great reading: http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/walking-helps-us-think

• This is nothing to do with walking but it is such a good advertisement that I had to include it. Thanks to Inaki Gomez for this link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MOXQo7nURs0

• And a great article on USA masters walker Diane Graham-Henry of Chicago: http://www.chicagotribune.com/lifestyl es/ct-remarkable-graham-henry-20140905-story.html

• And a single walk result from a T&F meet in Bergen, Norway, on Tuesday 2 September , where Erik Tysse won the 3000m walk with a super quick time of 11:20.80.

• And finally, to finish with a photo as VRWC walker Jason Kozica continues his overseas trip and sent me this great photo from Central Park in New York where he was lucky enough to team up with USA international walker Maria Michta for a training session.

CHINESE 4 DAY RALLY ANNOUNCED

Full details for the much anticipated second annual four-day race walk tour around the Taihu Lake near Suzhou in , has now been announced (see http://www.marciaitaliana.com/admin/pdf/calendario/03092014908Around%20Taihu%202014.pdf). The main points may be summarised as follows

• The distances of the four days will be: 16km, 15km, 10km and 16km, for a total of 57 km. • To compete in the professional section, walkers must be ranked in the IAAF top 100 list for their walk event. • Teams in 2014 will be composed by four athletes (in 2013 it was three) with the score determined by the first three individual results. • The Pit Lane Rule will be used in the Tour. • Generous prize money is once again on offer. • Mass participation walks will be held alongside the first, the third and the fourth day's events.

All in all, it looks like a fantastic proposition once again and I am sure that a number of our elite Australians will be in action.

R.I.P. DAVE GWYN

The USA racewalking community is in mourning this week with the passing of Dave Gwyn. Dave died about two weeks ago at his home in Houston. Dave had selflessly promoted Race Walking as a coach, an official and with the many Race Walking meets he coordinated. He also anonymously provided several scholarships and financial assistance to help youth attend Race Walking clinics and meets. He was a coach and friend to many walkers over many years. This quote from Dave McGovern sums up his contributions pretty succinctly.

Dave has for many years picked up the lodging and meals for 50k athletes and officials who attended his January 50k in Houston. He has paid the way for many, many youth athletes to JOs and other meets over the years, provided scholarships for youth to attend my clinics in Houston, has been a clearinghouse for race information throughout Texas, and the US, including even the most obscure races that were willing (usually as his request) to provide race walk awards (and if needed, he would pay for the awards. Dave was Texas racewalking. I can't imagine there's any way that Houston/Texas will find another who can match his passion for the event/sport, but maybe, as others have suggested, donations can be made to support his legacy.

CELEBRITY PICS

Thanks to Nicole Fagan for this week's Celebrity Pic. She explains:

Seeing though you asked for any photos of famous people you have met through walking, I thought I would send this one in. It was after the 2008 Winter National Road Walks in Albert Park. Just after the presentation finished we ran into Hamish from Hamish and Andy. Not the best quality photo (camera phones have improved a lot in the past 6 years).

For the record, the photo shows Jess Rothwell, Lyn Bannister, Nicole Fagan and Jess Rothwell. For overseas readers, Hamish and Andy are an Australian comedy duo who started off in radio and who have gone on to a successful TV career as well. Still going strong and still very popular.

Thanks Nicole!

NEW RACEWALK STAMPS

I have just been alerted to a Chinese stampsheet from the 2010 Asian Games, , China, which features Chinese gold medallists from that meet. China won all 3 walks medals at that meet (Wang Hao on the men's 20km - 1:20:50, Si Tianfeng in the 50km - 3:47:04 and Liy Hong in the women's 20km - 1:30:06). There is definitely one walker and I am guessing that the picture of the athlete throwing water over his face is also a walker. In that case, they would be Wang Hao and Si Tianfeng. It is not strictly a stamp of a walker but a sheetlet which is nearly the same thing! Added to my VRWC stamps page http://www.vrwc.org.au/vrwcstamps.shtml.
