By TONY BRITT School bell tolls [email protected] Columbia County property owners will notice two proposed millage rate increases on their 2012 TRIM (Truth In Millage) notices. TRIM notices are only proposed millage rates for the upcoming fiscal year. One, officials say, is a formality, but another may require property owners to cough up much more in taxes for one of the county’s taxing authorities. The Lake Shore Hospital Authority is propos- ing to raise its property tax millage rate from 0.962 in 2011 to 1.500 in 2012. The increase would actually restore the Hospital Authority’s millage rate to its normal operating level of 1.5 mills that it has had for years. The authority rolled back its millage in 2010 to 0.962 to give relief to county taxpayers, according to LSHA Executive Director Jack Berry. If the millage rate is restored to 1.5 mills, after computations, property owners in Columbia County will pay the increase on the Lake Shore Hospital Authority line item of their tax bill. Berry said during the two years of the millage rollback, the Hospital Authority spent $1 million annually from its reserve account to maintain indigent care expense. The authority’s reserves can’t handle any more drain, he said. “I think that our reserves are down now to around $5 million, which I think is as low as we need to go,” he said. “If something should happen where we had to take over the hospital JASON MATTHEW WALKER/Lake City Reporter again that would give us enough funds to run Chris Culpepper (left) and his brother, Brad Culpepper, both of Athletic Resources, slip a piece of wood under a scissor-lock the hospital for about six months until we found design as they work on the floor of the Columbia High School gymnasium Thursday. • IOC Reanalysis Programme Beijing 2008 and London 2012 The
Last updated on 18 August 2017 IOC reanalysis programme Beijing 2008 and London 2012 The protection of clean athletes and the fight against doping are top priorities for the International Olympic Committee (IOC), as outlined in Olympic Agenda 2020, the IOC’s strategic roadmap for the future of the Olympic Movement. Programme initiated prior the Olympic Games Rio 2016 To provide a level playing field for all clean athletes at the Olympic Games Rio 2016, the IOC put special measures in place, including targeted pre-tests and the reanalysis of stored samples from the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 and London 2012, following an intelligence-gathering process that started in August 2015 – in consultation with WADA and International Federations (IFs). The additional analyses on samples collected during the Olympic Games Beijing 2008 and London 2012 were performed with improved analytical methods, in order to possibly detect prohibited substances that could not be identified by the analysis performed at the time of these editions of the Olympic Games. For reference, some reanalysis of the stored samples of Beijing 2008 and London 2012 was already conducted in 2009 and 2015 respectively, leading to the sanctioning of six athletes. The programme for Beijing samples has concluded due to the statute of limitations. The total number of confirmed Adverse Analytical Findings (AAFs) by reanalysis in 2016 was announced as 101. Targeted re-analysis programme In order to support the investigations of Prof. McLaren and his team, the IOC ordered a number of targeted re-analyses of Russian athletes’ samples during the course of 2016. In December 2016, the IOC also extended the mandate of the Oswald Commission to examine all samples collected from Russian athletes during the Olympic Games London 2012, following the findings of the completed Independent Person Report.

  • The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby
View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE provided by White Rose E-theses Online The Unladylike Ladies of Roller Derby?: How Spectators, Players and Derby Wives Do and Redo Gender and Heteronormativity in All-Female Roller Derby Megan Geneva Murray PhD The University of York Women’s Studies January 2012 Abstract All-female roller derby is a rapidly growing full-contact sport played on quad roller skates, with a highly popularized punk, feminine, sexual and tough aesthetic. Utilising theories on the institution of heterosexuality, I conducted a qualitative study on all-female roller derby which evaluated the way in which derby aligns with or challenges heteronormativity. In order to approach this question, I analysed, firstly, thirty-eight interviews with spectators, and twelve with players about their interactions with spectators. Secondly, I interviewed twenty-six players about the phenomenon of “derby wives,” a term used to describe particular female friendships in roller derby. My findings relate the complex relationship between players and spectators by focusing on: (i) spectators’ interpretations of the dress, pseudonyms, and identities of players, as well as the ways in which they were actively involved in doing gender through their discussions of all-female, coed, and all-male roller derby; (ii) players’ descriptions of their interactions with spectators, family members, romantic partners, friends and strangers, regarding roller derby. Additionally, I address the reformulation of the role “wife” to meet the needs of female players within the community, and “derby wives” as an example of Adrienne Rich’s (1980) “lesbian continuum.” “Derby girls” are described as “super heroes” and “rock stars.” Their pseudonyms are believed to help them “transform” once they take to the track.

  • USATF 2008 Annual Report
2008 USATF Annual Report WELCOME TO USA TRACK & FIELD Three letters: “U.S.A.” Together they are the most powerful brand in Olympic sport, and nowhere is it stronger than on the track and in the field. The organization charged with growing that brand and administering the U.S. team, USA Track & Field (USATF) is the national governing body for track and field, long distance running and race walking in the United States. Part of the Olympic Family, with the power of “The Rings” behind it, USATF also is a modern, professional sports organization who views its peers as the NBA, MLS and other pro sports leagues. USATF’s raison d’etre is to advance the sport of track and field in the American psyche and in the American sports business and entertainment industries. The sport is international, elemental and eternal. Among the most ubiquitous and accessible activities in the world, track and field has universal appeal, with 213 national member federations competing on the international level. It is a powerful social and economic force in the United States, where more than 30 million Americans are runners and 10 million Americans run 100 times or more each year. Indoor and outdoor track and cross country is the #1 participatory sport in American junior highs and high schools. Tens of thousands of Americans are involved with the sport as coaches, officials and volunteers. The sport penetrates deeply into the inner cities, while fans at some meets boast an average household income well over $150,000. All things to all people? Maybe … but in the best possible way, and with focus on growth.
