On three Sundays May 13, 20 and 27 at the 10.30 Service at LPC we have two visiting preachers plus the Rector to focus and lead thoughts and prayer. Bible studies on Wednesdays 9, 16 and 23 May at 7.00 pm and Saturday May 19 at 10.30am. All these events help us to realise our responsibility to the mission of church and our ability to meet this responsibility. One of the most impressive facts about Christian Aid is that it works in every country with local agencies, thus ensuring the people of the area are totally involved in the decision making and delivery of the initiatives to restore justice. This year the country of Sierra Leone is being highlighted by a particular project taking place for the people of Gbap (pronounced Bap). The partner agency is the Methodist Church of Sierra Leone who has encouraged the people of the town to set up a village development project. This enables the farmers to have tools to work the land, transport for the distribution of their products and central milling machines to grind the cassava, making it much more marketable. The success, both financially and in community development terms, has enabled the building of a school for the local children.

    http://interfaithrefugeeinitiative.org/ We are leaders from Britain’s major faiths: Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Jain, Jewish, Muslim, Sikh, Zoroastrian. All our faiths compel us to affirm the dignity of all human beings and to offer help to anyone in need. As people of faith, we call on your Government urgently to revise its policy towards refugees. The best of this country is represented by the generosity, kindness, solidarity and decency that Britain has at many times shown those fleeing persecution, even at times of far greater deprivation and difficulty than the present day. We rejoice in the mosaic of different faiths and British communities that we now represent. We are proud that in May 2016, in a survey by Amnesty International, 83% of Britons said they would welcome refugees into their neighbourhoods and households. In the face of the unfolding human catastrophe, there are immediate and viable steps that the Government can take to offer sanctuary to more refugees. We call on you to create safe, legal routes of travel, for example by adopting fair and humane family reunion policies for refugees. Under the present immigration rules, a British doctor of Syrian origin could not bring her parents from a refugee camp in Lebanon – even though they were refugees and she could support and house them. A Syrian child who arrived alone in the UK could not bring his parents from a refugee camp in Jordan – even if the child were recognised a refugee and even though his parents were themselves refugees. Families in these situations can currently be reunited only by resorting to desperately unsafe irregular journeys, sometimes ending in avoidable tragedies.

It is reassuring that at last we have all the Guild Officer posts filled with the volunteering of Robert for Education Officer which was readily accepted by the meeting. I thank him for offering his services and my thanks also to all of the other Officers for their hard work over the last year and on standing for another year in their various posts. I read with interest, as I am sure many of you did, the article in The Ringing World on May 2nd by Chris Mew of Warwick relating to the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act, 2006, which in simple terms is an extension of the existing Child Protection Act. It would appear from the article that the new Act, which is scheduled to go live in October 2009, will have far reaching effects on the teaching of young persons or vulnerable adults and will prevent those same people from being able to partake in most ringing activities if ALL of the other adults taking part are not cleared by a CRB check or eventually registered by the Independent Safeguarding Authority.

    Friday 2nd May 2014 NEW BISHOP OF BARKING SAYS IT IS A PRIVILEGE TO BE JOINING A DIOCESE WHICH IS ON THE MOVE WITH GOD The Venerable Peter Hill, Archdeacon of Nottingham, has been nominated by Her Majesty the Queen as the new Bishop of Barking in succession to The Rt Revd David Hawkins. Peter Hill said: “The call of God to be a bishop has come unexpectedly and I am both excited and daunted by the task that lies ahead. “It is a privilege to be joining a diocese which is on the move with God and is currently celebrating 100 years of mission and ministry. I am energised and challenged by its vision and determination, led by Bishop Stephen, to be a transforming presence for Jesus in people's lives and communities. I intend to play my full part in that vision and action. “As Bishop of Barking I very much look forward to taking a lead in the Episcopal Area with its rich diversity of faiths and culture, and engaging fully in its public life. East London and South Essex are expanding rapidly and I know there is adventure and challenge ahead for the people of God as we share the Good News of Jesus Christ in a changing world. “It will be great working alongside a strong and creative leadership team as we build on the past and work to re-imagine the ministry and service of the church for the future.” The Bishop of Chelmsford, The Right Reverend Stephen Cottrell, added: “I am delighted that Peter Hill has agreed to be the next Bishop of Barking.
