Entering year number four in the LeVelle Moton era at North Carolina Central University, it’s clear to see that the Eagles are ready to compete with the top teams in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) after posting a 10-6 mark in league action, finishing its first official NCAA Division I season with a winning record at 17-15, and nearly advancing to the semifinals of the league tournament in its first attempt, as they strive to improve upon a successful first campaign in the second season as official conference members. Of the 215 schools that have reclassified to the NCAA Division I level, NCCU is one of 38 schools across the nation that finished its first official season with 17 wins or more. That puts the Eagles in the same company as Air Force (1958), VCU (1974), Weber State (1964), George Mason (1979), UNLV (1970), James Madison (1977), and Northwestern State (La.) (1997), which also recorded 17 or more wins in its inaugural Division I campaign. With six returners, including three (Ray Willis, Emanuel Chapman, and Ebuka Anyaorah) who started more than 21 contests, the Eagles will welcome seven newcomers into the fold for the 2012-13 campaign. “The core group of our returners will be relied upon heavily to provide leadership both on and off the court,” said Moton. “Their first MEAC experience should provide a pathway of success in terms of understanding the daily competition and challenges this conference presents.” Willis leads all returnees as he is coming off a second team All-MEAC campaign where he averaged 14.6 points a game, which was seventh in the league. The Atlanta, Ga., native finished the year with four double-doubles and scored 20- plus points on four different occasions, including a career-high 28 points against Delaware State on Jan. 28. Willis also earned MEAC player of the week honors twice during the regular season. As the team’s point guard for most of the season, Chapman quietly had one of the best offensive seasons by an NCCU floor leader since the 1979-80 campaign, as the sophomore dished out 162 assists, averaging 5.06 per game, to end the year second in the MEAC. Chapman had five games of 10 assists or more, including 14 against Barber-Scotia and 11 in conference play against Maryland Eastern Shore. Chapman has risen into NCCU’s top-15 all-time in helpers with 220, passing Shawn Ray who amassed 215 assists from 2000-03. In his first season as an Eagle, Anyaorah flashed his offensive ability to the maroon and gray faithful by scoring in double figures 13 times, including a career- high 25 points in a near upset of East Carolina on the road on Dec. 29. The Suwanee, Ga., native hit 39 three-pointers on the year in his 21 starts. Coming off the bench in his sophomore season, Jeremy Ingram became known as “The Spark.” He averaged just under 23 minutes a game and scored 9.3 points a contest shooting 35.9 percent from three-point range. The Charlotte, N.C., native torched Howard on Jan. 16 for a career-high 27 points that included a 10-for-14 Ray Willis and his 14.6 points per game effort from the field. Ingram scored in double figures 13 times in 26 games played. leads all returners in the 2012-13 season. Sophomore Karamo Jawara (Bergen, Norway) enters his second season looking to earn more minutes and improve upon his rookie campaign where he saw Willis was named 2nd team All-MEAC as action in 31 of 32 games. Senior Jonathan Nicely (Augusta, Ga.) will look to end a junior. (Photo by Red Rocket) his career on a high note to round out the returners on NCCU’s squad. With the talent that Moton compiled, many folks around the conference were not all that surprised with the early success of the Eagles, but the second time around the maroon and gray will have to rely on seven newcomers to see how high the program can climb in the 2012-2013 season. A duo of redshirt sophomores Jay Copeland and DavRon Williams, who were both on campus last season, will finally make their NCCU debut this year and will be counted on to give the Eagles a boost in the post. At 6-7, 235 pounds, Copeland transferred to the Bull City from Ball State and did not play due to NCAA transfer rules. Hailing from Suffolk, Va., Copeland has fans excited with this size and athletic ability. Williams missed last season due to a shoulder injury, but he is another intriguing prospect at 6-7, 210 pounds. “Jay and DavRon should give us some much need frontcourt help,” said Moton. “Those two have the ability to score inside, which is something we will need in this league to be successful.” The final five pieces of the puzzle will certainly have an impact on the Eagles success beginning at the point guard position with Drimir Ferguson (Bronx, N.Y.), who at 5-9 was the unquestioned leader of the one of the top junior colleges in the nation in Monroe Community College. At 6-7, 225 pounds, Stanton Kidd (Baltimore, Md.) comes to NCCU as an extremely athletic forward, while incoming freshman Ramon Johnson (Newark, N.J.) stands at 6-9 giving Moton plenty of options when it comes to going big or small. The final two signees were teammates at State Fair Community College in Sedalia, Mo., as guardAlfonzo Houston (Cleveland Heights, Ohio) and Antonin Galaya (St. Maarten, Virgin Islands) come to the maroon and gray nation with the ability to put the ball in the basket squarely in their arsenal. At 6-3, Houston is known more as a scorer, while the 6-5 Galaya has the reputation that he’s a sharp shooter, all very vital in Moton’s system. “We feel great about our recruiting class,” said Moton. “All of our incoming recruits will be forced to adapt to the Division I basketball game quickly. We needed a leader like Ferguson to come in to orchestrate the floor and make everyone’s job easier.” Moton added two more walk-ons Jordan Marrow (Cleveland, Ohio) and local product Rashawn King (Raleigh, N.C.) to complete the Eagle roster. For NCCU to be successful with the amount of newcomers and returners, putting together a cohesive unit is key. “For us to be successful, chemistry is essential,” said Moton. “Each guy must sacrifice something immediately for this program to get better.” In Moton’s three seasons as the head coach, the Eagles have increased the win total each year and the next step for the program after finishing in the top five last season is to continue to move up the MEAC ladder. “I think it’s important for us to move up the chain each and every year,” said Moton. “Every year we believe that anything less than a championship is unacceptable.
