A Tale of Two JDs: Jordan Danielson’s Rise to Bullpen Dominance If you followed the Saints, or the North Star League for that matter, from 2005-2016, you are probably familiar with longtime D-C pitcher, Jordan Danielson. You also probably just know him simply as “JD”. In high school, JD posted very good numbers as a starter, tallying a total of 91 innings for the Chargers and posting a 9-4 record with a 2.77 ERA. Naturally, he would take on a starting role on the Saints pitching staff in 2006 (after a limited role on the 2005 squad). For six years, JD held his own in the starting rotation, but that would not come without peaks and valleys. Today we’re going to dive deep into JD’s transition from innings-eating starter with consistency issues, to full-time, lights out closer. The Numbers Before we can have some fun with Diesel’s prime years, we need to start from the beginning. In his rookie season (2005), JD logged a modest 7 innings. However, he was perfect during those innings, giving up not a single run, earned or unearned. He also struck out 7 and scattered 5 hits without walking a single batter. Following his fantastic rookie season, he would log 224 more innings, almost exclusively in a starting role. However, during his six-year stint in the rotation, averaging a 4.59 ERA and striking out 8.65 batters per 9 innings. His lowest ERA came in the 2010 season, where he posted a 4.18 ERA.

The Newsletter of the Atlanta 400 Baseball Fan Club ________________________________________________________________________________ April 2021 By Dave Badertscher After 18 long months without “live” Braves baseball in Atlanta, more than 14,000 masked, socially distanced fans turned out for Opening Night at Truist Park on Friday, April 9. When the gates opened the stadium began filling to 33% capacity, our eyes drawn to “44” etched in center field as “real” fans replaced the cardboard cutouts of 2020. We eagerly anticipated a much needed in-person baseball experience. It was high time for a rematch of the opening series in Philly, which had not gone well for our guys. Charlie Morton vs. Zack Wheeler rebooted. Braves fans were pumped! What would Opening Night at a Braves game be without evoking memories of the franchise’s 50+ years relationship with the city of Atlanta and the South? A moving pregame ceremony paid tribute to the passing of Bill Bartholomay, Phil Niekro, Don Sutton, and Hank Aaron, highlighting their legendary contributions to the team, the game of baseball, and our community. Fan Club member Wayne Coleman (pictured bottom right) played “Amazing Grace” on bagpipes. Timothy Miller sang the “National Anthem.” Jets flew over. Fans stood and cheered. Braves Country at its best. The Tomahawk Times April 2021 Page 2 The Phillies brought an impressive, early 5-1 record to town. The pitching duel between Morton and Wheeler held until Ronald Acuna launched a 456 foot, two-run blast and the Braves scored three in the bottom of the 5th. The red-hot Acuna ending up going 4 for 5 and made a sensational run-saving catch in the 6th.

Other coaches should be outside the circle observing. If someone needs additional help or correction take that individual outside the circle. When corrected have them rejoin the circle. Each player should have a bat. Batting: Stance/Knuckles/Ready/Load-up/Sqwish/Swing/Follow Thru/Release Stance: Players should be facing the instructor with their feet spread apart as wide as is comfortable, weight balanced on both feet and in a straight line with the instructor. Atlanta Braves Clippings Monday, September 21, 2020 Braves.com Wright baffles Mets in 6 1/3-inning, 1-hit gem By Mark Bowman Ronald Acuña Jr. was bound to right himself before the postseason arrived. But the fact Kyle Wright has also started the regular season’s home stretch on a good note gives the Braves even more reason to be excited about what October might bring. Acuña’s solo homer provided all of the necessary support for Wright, who constructed a career-best start in the Braves’ 7-0 win over the Mets on Sunday afternoon at Citi Field. The right-hander’s confidence has grown significantly as he’s used his past two starts to show he has the potential to lessen concerns about the postseason rotation. “He’s been tremendous,” said catcher Travis d’Arnaud, who hit a two-run double in the eighth inning. “His demeanor on the mound and his demeanor in between innings, he’s been carrying himself really well. He’s just been attacking guys.” The Braves’ magic number to clinch a third consecutive National League East title has been reduced to six with seven games remaining, four of which will be played against the second-place Marlins this week. Looking ahead to the postseason, the Braves’ rotation will likely include Max Fried, Ian Anderson, Cole Hamels and Wright, who had essentially been a candidate by default before he produced two of the strongest starts of his young career over the past eight days. Wright earned his first career win with six strong innings at Nationals Park last weekend.

  • Good Approach at the Plate
Taking a Good Approach at the Plate !We have all see hitters who we feel overachieve and underachieve their mechanics and physical abilities at the plate. We cannot, for the life of us, figure out why the kid who absolutely crushes the ball in the cage, has solid mechanics, and a quick bat hits 50 points lower than the kid who looks far less impressive in the cage, has slower hands, and has questionable mechanics. If this is the case, look no further than pitch selection and plate approach. !We often hear coaches reminding players to have a proper approach at the plate, but what exactly does that mean? A good approach at the plate means different things depending on the age level you are coaching. Basic Levels !At the most basic levels, a proper approach simply means getting a good pitch to hit in any count and not swinging at pitches far out of the strike zone. Pitchers may not be changing speeds very much, and certainly are not locating pitches very well below the age of 12. At this age level simply emphasize getting a good pitch to hit and protecting the the strike zone with two strikes. Advanced Levels !Once pitchers begin to chance speeds and locate pitches, the concept of taking a quality at bat changes quite a bit. The idea at this level is still to get a good pitch to hit, but the concept of a “good pitch” needs to be refined. The toughest thing to get across to your players is that not every fastball that is a strike is a good pitch to hit.

  • The Rules of Scoring
THE RULES OF SCORING 2011 OFFICIAL BASEBALL RULES WITH CHANGES FROM LITTLE LEAGUE BASEBALL’S “WHAT’S THE SCORE” PUBLICATION INTRODUCTION These “Rules of Scoring” are for the use of those managers and coaches who want to score a Juvenile or Minor League game or wish to know how to correctly score a play or a time at bat during a Juvenile or Minor League game. These “Rules of Scoring” address the recording of individual and team actions, runs batted in, base hits and determining their value, stolen bases and caught stealing, sacrifices, put outs and assists, when to charge or not charge a fielder with an error, wild pitches and passed balls, bases on balls and strikeouts, earned runs, and the winning and losing pitcher. Unlike the Official Baseball Rules used by professional baseball and many amateur leagues, the Little League Playing Rules do not address The Rules of Scoring. However, the Little League Rules of Scoring are similar to the scoring rules used in professional baseball found in Rule 10 of the Official Baseball Rules. Consequently, Rule 10 of the Official Baseball Rules is used as the basis for these Rules of Scoring. However, there are differences (e.g., when to charge or not charge a fielder with an error, runs batted in, winning and losing pitcher). These differences are based on Little League Baseball’s “What’s the Score” booklet. Those additional rules and those modified rules from the “What’s the Score” booklet are in italics. The “What’s the Score” booklet assigns the Official Scorer certain duties under Little League Regulation VI concerning pitching limits which have not implemented by the IAB (see Juvenile League Rule 12.08.08).

  • Teaching Bunt Defenses Progression
Teaching Bunt Defense Many coaches make bunt defense too difficult and confusing by having ten different plays and having an intricate naming system. The defenses below are standard bunt defenses, nothing revolutionary. The real success of defending bunts lies in the team performing the general principals of the bunt defense. The numbering system below is just one possible naming system. It is entirely plausible to simply name your bunt defenses and not use a numbering system since it really doesn’t matter if the other team knows what defense your team is in. Initial Tactical Game: Set up a full infield including a pitcher. The offense starts with a runner on first base. Pitcher delivers the pitch and the hitter sacrifice bunts to advance the runner. Give no instruction to your defense and see how many of the rules and defenses they can come up with on their own. General principals of bunt defense 1.) Communicate “BUNT!” as soon as you see it 2.) Sprint to your assignment as soon as you see bunt 3.) Be under control when you get to the ball 4.) The quicker you get to the ball, the less rushed you are to make the play 5.) Pitcher must hop off to his responsibility after he finishes his pitch 5.) Set your feet! 6.) Cover every base (whoever doesn’t field bunt between P/3B has to cover 3rd) 7.) GET AN OUT!!!! Calling system: There are many numbers of ways to communicate bunt defenses to your team. This is just one system that may work for you The number 1 represents the first baseman charging The number 3 represents the third baseman charging The number 13 represents both the first and third baseman charging Call a three digit number, the first number represents who is charging.
