II. § 10.—HAGIOS NIKOLAOS. ON March 31st, 1903, and the three following days I conducted a trial excavation at a site situated at about an hour's distance from Rous- solakkos, and known as Hagios Nikolaos from a small church of that name. During the first three days I employed ten men, on the fourth only two. The most prominent feature of the landscape is the height called Modhi (1776 ft.). From the foot of this there runs almost due east a deep valley with a river-bed, which, although quite dry at the time when I saw it, must sometimes carry off a considerable volume of water from the surrounding hills. The valley is at first narrow and its sides very steep, but a little way above the chapel it broadens out considerably : although the left bank is steep and in places almost precipitous, the right side rises in a gentle slope, forming a series of terraces which are under cultivation and afford a good harvest in spite of the stony character of the soil. -

Arrive at the Corinth Canal for a brief stop and then continue on to the Acropolis of Corinth. Acro-corinth is the citadel of Corinth. It is situated to the southwest of the ancient city and rises to an elevation of 1883 ft. [574 m.]. Today it is surrounded by walls that are about 1.85 mi. [3 km.] long. The foundations of the fortifications are ancient—going back to the Hellenistic Period. The current walls were built and rebuilt by the Byzantines, Franks, Venetians, and Ottoman Turks. Climb up and visit the fortress. Then proceed to the Ancient city of Corinth. It was to this megalopolis where the apostle Paul came and worked, established a thriving church, subsequently sending two of his epistles now part of the New Testament. Here, we see all of the sites associated with his ministry: the Agora, the Temple of Apollo, the Roman Odeon, the Bema and Gallio’s Seat. The small local archaeological museum here is an absolute must! In Romans 16:23 Paul mentions his friend Erastus and • • we will see an inscription to him at the site. In the afternoon we will drive to GREECE CRETE TURKEY Nafplion for check-in at hotel followed by dinner and overnight. Political geography and palatial Crete Andrew Bevan Postprint of 2010 paper in Journal of Mediterranean Archaeology 23.1: 27-54 (doi: 10.1558/jmea.v23i1.27). Abstract The political geography of Crete during the period of the Bronze Age palaces has been a subject of widespread debate, not only with respect to the timing of the island’s move towards greater social and political complexity, but also with regard to the nature of the political institutions and territorial configurations that underpinned palace-centred society, as well as their longer-term stability over the course of the 2nd millennium BC. As such, the region provides an ideal context in which to consider the broader question of how we develop robust political geographies in pre- and proto-historic contexts. This paper proposes the need for a more deliberate interlocking of computational, comparative and material approaches, as a means of guiding our political model-building efforts. 1. Introduction While the world of palatial Crete has no foundational story as powerful or as enduring as the Trojan war, the Classical tradition nonetheless invokes the Cretan palatial past in conveniently clear-cut ways, referring to a central mythical figure of King Minos alongside stories of political unification, law- giving, overseas expansion, thalassocracy, internecine struggle and eventual political re-fragmentation (e.g. Homer Odyssey 19.165-202; Herodotus Histories 1.171-3, 3.122; Thucydides Peloponnesian War 1.4-8; Aristotle Politics 2.10; also Pseudo-Apollodorus Bibliotheca 3.1-3). More precisely, such sources assume the development of a single state under a male king whose core political borders encompassed all of Crete and whose wider political control by indirect governance eventually extended to at least some of the Aegean islands. -

Journal of Greek Linguistics 19 (2019) 215–226 brill.com/jgl Institutional developments in Greek linguistics Abstract In this piece, three items are presented that discuss recent developments in Modern Greek studies in three different academic institutions that have a positive impact on Greek linguistics. Keywords academia – Modern Greek studies – Modern Greek linguistics In the past year or so, several academic institutions have created centers that provide an institutional home for different aspects of Greek studies on their respective campuses.These centers offer a home for, among other things, Greek linguistics. Thus, in this piece, these three developments are presented by way of showcasing these new centers and their potential for a positive impact on Greek linguistics. 1 The Greek Dialectology Lab at The Ohio State University In the summer of 2018, with the blessings of both the outgoing chair of the Department of Linguistics at The Ohio State University (OSU), Shari Speer, and the incoming chair, Cynthia Clopper, an office in the department which had become vacant was designated as laboratory space and assigned to Distin- guished University Professor of Linguistics Brian D. Joseph for his use. Using as a model the highly successful Laboratory of Modern Greek Dialects (http:// lmgd.philology.upatras.gr) at the University of Patras, where he has visited on numerous occasions, he created the Ohio State University Laboratory for Greek Dialectology (Το Εργαστήριο για την Ελληνική Διαλεκτολογία) with the express purpose of promoting the study of Greek dialects, both ancient and modern. The laboratory is located in room 120 Oxley Hall on the OSU campus. -

CREATIVE EXPRESSIONS IN ANCIENT GREECE June 4 – June 19, 2020 CLST 271 Dr. Rosa Maria Motta Dr. Mark Padilla Lecturer in Classical Studies and Art History Professor of Classical Studies MCM 159C MCM 159B [email protected] [email protected] Experience Greece is a three-credit CNU summer program in Greece taught by two CNU professors from Classical Studies. The program initiates in Virginia and takes place over eighteen days. The course focuses on understanding ancient Greek art and architecture (i.e., physical material) in context. Highlights include archaeological sites and museums in Athens, Crete, Delphi, Olympia, Mycenae, and Epidaurus (see Program Scope). Students will spend a minimum of 100 contact hours (6,000 minutes) with professors at museums, sites, and classrooms. The course partners with College Year in Athens (CYA), a private American university in central Athens. AICE * Creative Expressions AICE courses focus on the human drive for creativity and self-expression in a wide range of forms and over a wide variety of cultures. Students examine creative works both structurally and within a larger context; they may also produce works of creative expression. AICE Course Learning Outcomes Students who successfully complete CLST 271 should be able to do the following: • Create or describe stylistic elements associated with a selected work or artistic genre. (AICE: CLO-1). • Express or identify the socio-political, historical, cultural, or economic context with which a selected work or artistic genre is commonly associated. (AICE: CLO-2). IN my previous paper1 on Cretan Palaces and the Aegean Civilization I sought to give a general account of the architectural evidence resulting from excavation, in its bearing on the disputed question as to the continuity of Aegean culture throughout the course of its development. It will now be advisable to consider the problems involved on a wider basis, in the light of the objects other than architectural, found in Crete and elsewhere in the Aegean world. And here it will be convenient to take as our point of departure a standpoint that may now perhaps be regarded as pretty general, though negative in its bearings, and which is to the effect that the originators of the Aegean civilization, at any rate in its pre-Mycenaean phases, were not ' Achaeans' in the vague general sense of being a people from the mainland of Greece. -

Harris, Oxford Peter Marshall Fraser 1918–2007 THE SUBJECT OF THIS MEMOIR was for many decades one of the two pre- eminent British historians of the Hellenistic age, which began with Alexander the Great. Whereas the other, F. W. Walbank (1909–2008),1 concentrated on the main literary source for the period, the Greek histor- ian Polybius, Fraser’s main expertise was epigraphic. They both lived to ripe and productive old ages, and both were Fellows of this Academy for an exceptionally long time, both having been elected aged 42 (Walbank was FBA from 1951 to 2008, Fraser from 1960 to 2007). Peter Fraser was a tough, remarkably good-looking man of middle height, with jet-black hair which turned a distinguished white in his 60s, but never disappeared altogether. When he was 77, a Times Higher Education Supplement profile of theLexicon of Greek Personal Names (for which see below, p. 179) described him as ‘a dashing silver-haired don’. He was attract ive to women even at a fairly advanced age and when slightly stout; in youth far more so. The attraction was not merely physical. He was exceptionally charming and amusing company when not in a foul mood, as he not infrequently was. He had led a far more varied and exciting life than most academics, and had a good range of anecdotes, which he told well. He could be kind and generous, but liked to disguise it with gruffness. He could also be cruel. He was, in fact, a bundle of contradictions, and we shall return to this at the end. -
