Seite 1 von 2 Guru Guru biography "We`re not cosmic rock, we`re comic rock." Mani Neumeier, 1973 A free form jazz mentality, avoiding musical clichés and commercialism, has always characterized the music and philosophies of German freak `n roll band GURU GURU who have categorically occupied their own special stage within the realms of modern music. From it`s LSD induced origins in the late `60s to it`s present day configuration which still rocks and grooves with intensity, countless personnel changes have occurred making it more of a succession of musical ventures and concepts under the moniker GURU GURU, which came about as a tongue-in-cheek reference to the BEATLES and their guru worshipping of the late `60s. GURU GURU were one of the first bands to become associated with the German Krautrock movement from that era along with bands such as XHOL CARAVAN, AMON DUUL and CAN. However, the band was not partial to the absurd stereo-typing and preferred the terms "acid space" or simply, "acid rock" which better described their loud, trippy, improvisational music. The constant driving force behind GURU GURU since it`s inception as THE GURU GURU GROOVE BAND in 1968 has been the MP3, Free Download (stream) unusual intellect and masterful musicianship of drummer MANI NEUMEIER. During the first half of the 1960s he embraced the jazz interpretations of JOHN COLTRANE, THELONIOUS MONK, MAX ROACH and other jazz mentors from which he would Tour & shows updates develop his own style of impulsive drumming. During this period he played with various traditional jazz groups in Zurich, Press & news updates Switzerland culminating with work with Swiss jazz pianist IRENE SCHWEIZER.

Paula Guerra Lou Reed: rock and roll is so genial in its conception that some people would be willing to die for it (…). Music gives a pulse that allows you to dream. It’s an entire generation walking to the sound of a Fender bass. It’s necessary that people be willing to die for music, that is all. People die no matter what, so why not music? Die for it. Isn’t it pretty? To want to die for beauty? (McNeil & McCain, 2006: 45). The 1960’s, from an music aesthetic and expression point of view, were marked by an intense creativity that spread throughout all artistic and cultural mediums. We associate this era with a revolutionary mark, be in cultural, moral or social terms, with the importance of figures such as Rimbaud, north American black blues, rock pioneers, beat generation, Henry Miller, Malraux, Baudelaire, Marcuse, Indian gurus, Marx, Trotsky, Mao Tse Tung… (Paraire, 1992: 75-77). In the USA, rock acquired an institutionalization close to that of the traditional star system, with the role of the English pop movement, in particular that of the Beatles, one of the most remarkable in this respect. It will not, then, be out of place to consider that rock music throughout the -------- 1 This text was first published in Portuguese with the following reference: Guerra, P., 2010. Introduction Electric Junk: Krautrock’s Identity Crisis If there is any musical subculture to which this modern age of online music consumption has been particularly kind, it is certainly the obscure, groundbreaking, and oft misunderstood German pop music phenomenon known as “krautrock”. That krautrock’s appeal to new generations of musicians and fans both in Germany and abroad continues to grow with each passing year is a testament to the implicitly iconoclastic nature of the style; krautrock still sounds odd, eccentric, and even confrontational approximately twenty-five years after the movement is generally considered to have ended.1 In fact, it is difficult nowadays to even page through a recent issue of major periodicals like Rolling Stone or Spin without chancing upon some kind of passing reference to the genre.

German rock, instead, invented a different kind of rock music. In fact, many German bands were not playing "rock" music at all. There is no question that the great era of German avant-rock was inspired by psychedelic music, but the German interpretation of psychedelic music had little to do with reproducing the effects of drugs: German musicians saw a relationship between psychedelic experiments and the German electronic avantgarde (such as Karlheinz Stockhausen), a relationship that, in retrospect, was already obvious in the USA's psychedelia, but that no one had articulated before. In 1968 three young musicians, Conrad Schnitzler, Hans-Joachim Roedelius and Klaus Schulze, founded the "Zodiak Free Arts Lab" in Berlin. This became the first venue for popular electronic music in Europe. That can be considered the moment when German musicians figured out that strategic relationship between psychedelic music and avantgarde music.

Rough Trade links: ! http://agitationfree.com AGITATION FREE with new live album “Shibuya Nights” Of all of the experimental German groups who emerged in the early 1970s, Agitation Free was certainly one of the most musically adventurous. From their beginnings in 1967, the band embraced the concept of performing long and free improvisations, experimenting with the use of liquid projectors, slide shows and their own films in live performances. The Electronic Beat Studio that AGITATION FREE initiated under the direction of Thomas Kessler also developed into the creative center for the Berlin groups ASH RA TEMPEL and TANGERINE DREAM. The sound of Agitation Free featured the pioneering electronics of Michael Hoenig one of Germany’s best at creating atmospheric melodies and powerful-layered soundscapes which both enhanced and defined the bands style. Also featured were guitarists Lutz Ulbrich and Gustl Lutjens whose magic fingers could conjure up exotic Eastern scales or soaring melodic melodies with ease. Drummer Burghard Rausch and bassist Michael “Fame” Günther were a polyrhythmic rhythm section extraordinaire that propelled the music. Recording two classic albums for the German division of Vertigo Records, (the classics Malesch in 1972 and “2nd” in 1973), the band split up in 1974. Although a number of posthumous albums, (featuring recordings made between 1972 and 1974 appeared following the band’s demise), and a studio album (“River of Return”) appeared in 1999, it was almost 35 years after disbanding that the original band came together once more to perform.

  • AGITATION FREE Kurzbio 8-11 E
AGITATION FREE -- a brief biography Agitation Free was one of the leading exponents of German experimental rock music in the early 1970s.. Starting in 1967, the Berlin band had begun to develop long and, for its time, very free Instrumental improvisations. By 1972 they attained cult status with a congenial mixture of improvisational Rock paired with electro-, ethno-, jazz- and trance elements. They were experimenting in concerts with liquid projectors, slides, and their own experimental films, in ways analogous to underground bands in California and the UK. Sonic sophistication led Agitation Free to collaborations in the avant-garde music scene with composers such as John Cage, Erhard Großkopf, Peter Michael Hamel und Ladislav Kupkovič. The Electronic Beat Studio, that Agitation Free initiated with composer Thomas Kessler, evolved into a creative center for the Berlin groups Ash Ra Tempel, Tangerine Dream and others. Early in 1970, Agitation Free appeared in the "First German Progressive Pop Festival" at the Berliner Sportpalast. In April 1972, the band toured Egypt, Lebanon, Cyprus and Greece at the invitation of the Goethe Institute. Manifold impressions from this trip found expression in the first album, "Malesch" (Vertigo), a fascinating soundweb of exotic original recordings from the Near East journey combined with cutting edge Krautrock – an irrefutable forerunner of today’s world music. Constant touring brought the band steadily increasing recognition all over Europe. They appeared in the cultural program of the Munich summer Olympics in 1972, went on their first French tour for two months in early 1973, appeared in May at the "German Rock Super Concert" in Frankfurt and produced their next album, “2nd” in July 1973.

PRODUCT INFO (CD) October 2, 2020 Artist Various Artists Title KRAUT! - Die innovativen Jahre des Krautrock 1968-1979, Vol. 3 Label Bear Family Productions Catalog no. BCD17623 EAN-Code 5397102176234 Price code: BS Format 2-CD (Digisleeve) with 112-page booklet Genre Rock No. of tracks 23 approx. 133:00 mns. Release date October 2, 2020 INFO: • Progressive Rock from Germany! • Never before has there been a comparable compilation! • Towards the end of the 1960s, German bands began their first attempts to emancipate themselves stylistically from their US and British role models. • ProgRock and Pchychedelia from our country were initially smiled at internationally and disparagingly called 'Krautrock' by cult DeeJay John Peel, among others. • Unorthodox formations could not be pigeonholed, and so a scene with a wide musical range was created. • This third part is dedicated to the South of Germany and presents popular bands such as Embryo, Kraan, Volker Kriegel, Guru Guru next to Action, Dzyan, Sahara, or Octopus and Orange Peel. Mostly remastered from digital tape copies by Marcus Heumann without wasting the original sound. • Compiled and commented on 112(!) pages by Burghard Rausch (DeeJay, vinyl collector, drummer, radio presenter/author and book editor). PLEASE, NOTE: liner notes in German! With the release of the third of a total of four issues, Bear Family marks another milestone on the way to a comprehensive documentation of the history of popular music in Germany from the early 1960s to the mid-1980s. 'Smash! Boom! Bang!' covers the complete history of Beat music in Germany on a total of 30 individual CDs; the CD documentation 'Für wen wir singen - Liedermacher in Deutschland' (‘For whom we sing – Singer/songwriters in Germany’), consisting of four triple CDs, describes the singer/songwriter scene with 274 individual songs, supplemented by the 10 CD box set 'Die Burg Waldeck Festivals 1964-1969'.
