The romance started a few months ago with tentative phone calls and occasional pieces of mail. I’ll admit, I was flattered by the attention. Who doesn’t dream of being wooed by a tall, dark stranger? I was reticent, but not coy. I looked at the bil- lets and even listened to the messages left on my voicemail. I spoke of it to friends, and received quite a shock. My suitors, both of them, had made overtures to all my friends. I began to suspect they were not actual romantics, but instead pragmatics. I felt betrayed, and found myself withdrawing. This first-of-its-kind study, which identifies the role of unconscious thought processes in texting and driving, is different from other research that has focused on the effects of this behavior. Thus, the current study investigates the role of habit in texting while driving, with a focus on how (rather than how much) the behavior is carried out. In the study, several hundred undergraduate students respond- ed to a questionnaire asking about their perceptions and uses of various aspects of mobile com- munication technology. They were asked about the level of automacity and frequency of tex- ting, as well as norms and atti- tudes toward texting and driving. The findings show that automatic tendencies are a significant and positive predictor of both sending and reading texts behind the wheel, even when accounting for how much individuals text over- all, norms and attitudes.
