PIG TALES Website: www.dallashog.com HOG Hotline: (972) 354-0538 APRIL 2012 PUBLICATION OF DALLAS TEXAS CHAPTER 1869 EST. 1985 CURRENT MEMBERSHIP 535 Trophy awarded to Steve Dye in recognition of Motor Cops for Kids reaching $250,000 in donations to the Shriners Hospitals for Children Musings from the Director By Ken “Papa Duck” Kennerly Well the rains came and the wind blew, but that did not deter our hearty teams of chili competitors from giving their best efforts at the Regional HOG Chili Cook off in Abilene, Texas, last month. Our two teams of Kerry and Alisha Turner, together with Diana Miller, Luis and Antoinette Guerrero gave a good showing on how to cook chili in rain and cold, but alas the winner and host for the 2013 Regional will be the DFW Chapter out of the Bedford Dealership. We will try again next year to bring the chili bowl to the Dallas H-D Dealership and I hope you will extend a thank you to each member of these two teams for their effort this year. And on the subject of rainy events, mother nature tried to challenge us again during our 28th Annual St. Patty’s Day Run by giving us a morning of rain and a slight chill in the air. Fortunately, that did not deter over 63 members and guests from coming out and making the event another success. We walked the tables to draw our colored coins and had two very happy winners take home the winnings, along with almost everyone winning one of the fabulous door prizes that had been donated by Kristen and Dallas Harley Davidson, as well as several members. If you ever thought buying extra door prize tickets did not help, then check with Mike “Pokey” Riley who took at least six extra prizes home. We also tried something different this year, with so much moisture in the air, we decided not to cook burgers but instead had Tom Steger and Tommy Thompson make a run up to Church’s Chicken and pick up chicken and fixings to feed everyone. There was plenty of good food and it worked so well, we may look at doing it again someday soon. We would not have had as much fun and success had it not been for those dedicated members, some who actually rode their scooters, who came out and supported our annual St Patty’s Day Run, along with all the volunteers who set it up, worked the tables, and cleaned up afterwards. A big congratulations to our Activities Officer Steve “Paw Paw” Scott for organizing and conducting the day. This was his first major event for the Chapter and he did a great job. Thanks Steve. As a final note, MotorCops For Kids has received recognition from the Shriners Hospitals for Children of our meeting the $250,000.00 donation level this past year. There will be a plaque put into the lobby of the hospital in Galveston, Texas, soon also recognizing our commitment to helping those in need. Please take time to view the plaque and trophy sent to MotorCops here in this newsletter. Well here’s hoping for some great riding weather in the coming months because, as always, your Road Captains are working on some exciting rides to take us on. So come out and see what kind of fun we can have together. As always, I look forward to getting to visit with you at our next get together… Till next time remember, It’s not the destination, it’s the journey! Papa Duck Have you ever stopped long enough to think about what being a DHOG member is really all about? I hadn’t either until I had to write an article every month for the newsletter and now needed a subject. First of all, it is a commitment to your Harley motorcycle, the one thing that we all have in common. When you buy your first Harley, you literally fall in love with the machine and you spend countless hours cleaning and servicing it. It is your new pride and joy. It is your freedom! We also have the bond that brings us Harley Owners together, a bond that only we have and only we know what it means. Anywhere we ride, we meet other Harley Owners and it can mean an instant friendship, again, a friendship that only we know. We have all the benefits that Harley offers only us, benefits that reach beyond our local dealership or Chapter. Only Harley Owners have all these. Aren’t we lucky? We DHOG members have something not all Chapters have. We have the best General Manager, Sean Steimel, who is dedicated to our Chapter members and genuinely cares about us. But the one thing that we DHOG members have that keeps us together, keeps us riding together, keeps us functioning as a family, is EACH OTHER. Yes, we have each other to depend on, to ride with, to have fun with on all our events, to socialize with, to watch out for each other, to take care of each other, to help each other, and sometimes share each other’s sorrow, but we have EACH OTHER. The Harleys are important, but WE are really the most important part of DHOG. So, go ahead and clean that bike, polish that sucker, show it off, love it, but above all, spend important time paying attention to your fellow DHOG family members. Make sure you say HOWDY to everyone, especially the newer members. Make a point to welcome everyone. Ask fellow members to sit with you at the events. Go out of your way to make the effort to thank all of YOUR Officers, YOUR Road Captains, because these are the people who sacrifice their time and expenses to insure that you DHOG members have a ride scheduled every week. And do not forget every VETERAN, specifically, DHOG VETERANS, who are darn special. Don’t forget the Texas State HOG rally is right around the corner. Have you checked the schedule of events and decided what you want to get out of the rally? Well, you better get started. Until next month, Mike “Smokey” Carter HISTORY ENTHUSIASTS! Quanah was the last warrior chief of the Quahada Comanche, and the first recognized chief of all the various Comanche tribes. The Quahada band surrendered in 1875 and moved onto a reservation near Fort Sill. With the assistance of local cattlemen, Quanah constructed the large, two story house in 1890 near Eagle Mountain for himself and his five wives. Interested in the full story of Quanah Parker?
