    CASTLE STUDIES: RECENT PUBLICATIONS – 29 (2016) By Dr Gillian Scott with the assistance of Dr John R. Kenyon Introduction Hello and welcome to the latest edition of the CSG annual bibliography, this year containing over 150 references to keep us all busy. I must apologise for the delay in getting the bibliography to members. This volume covers publications up to mid- August of this year and is for the most part written as if to be published last year. Next year’s bibliography (No.30 2017) is already up and running. I seem to have come across several papers this year that could be viewed as on the periphery of our area of interest. For example the papers in the latest Ulster Journal of Archaeology on the forts of the Nine Years War, the various papers in the special edition of Architectural Heritage and Eric Johnson’s paper on moated sites in Medieval Archaeology. I have listed most of these even if inclusion stretches the definition of ‘Castle’ somewhat. It’s a hard thing to define anyway and I’m sure most of you will be interested in these papers. I apologise if you find my decisions regarding inclusion and non-inclusion a bit haphazard, particularly when it comes to the 17th century and so-called ‘Palace’ and ‘Fort’ sites. If these are your particular area of interest you might think that I have missed some items. If so, do let me know. In a similar vein I was contacted this year by Bruce Coplestone-Crow regarding several of his papers over the last few years that haven’t been included in the bibliography.

Signed: Date: 2 Abstract This thesis centres on the analysis of the sustainable management of visitor attractions in Ireland and the development of a tool to aid attraction managers to becoming sustainable tourism businesses. Attractions can be the focal point of a destination and it is important that they are sustainably managed to maintain future business. Fáilte Ireland has written an overview of the attractions sector in Ireland and discussed how they would drive best practice in the sector. However, there have still not been any sustainable management guidelines from Fáilte Ireland for tourist attractions in Ireland. The principal aims of this research was to assess tourism attractions in terms of water, energy, waste/recycling, monitoring, training, transportation, biodiversity, social/cultural sustainable management and economic sustainable management. A sustainable management checklist was then developed to aid attraction managers to sustainability within their attractions, thus saving money and the environment. Findings from this research concluded that tourism attractions in Ireland are not sustainably managed and there are no guidelines, training or funding in place to support these attraction managers in the transition to sustainability. Managers of attractions are not aware or knowledgeable enough in the area of sustainability.

    ELEVEN FOLLIES IN COUNTY OFFALY CONDITION SURVEY & MEASURED DRAWINGS October 2013 2 This report was commissioned by Offaly County Council with financial assistance from the Heritage Council to consider the history, significance, condition and conservation of a disparate group of follies and garden building located in County Offaly. The structures range in scale from a pair of small circular stepped plinths, situated in a pond and measuring less than two meters in height, to an impressive eye-catcher rising to over fourteen meters. Most of the structures date from the eighteenth or early nineteenth centuries, and some were designed to provide impressive prospects of the surrounding countryside. Surprisingly, for a county that is generally thought to be flat and boggy, Offaly contains a significant number of hills, on which many of these structures are found. With the exception of one earthwork structure, now heavily overgrown and lacking definition, most of the structures survive in a reasonable state of preservation, albeit often in a poor state of repair. While the primary purpose of this report is to illustrate and describe the significance of these structures, and equally important purpose is to recommend practical ways in which there long term future can be preserved, wither by active conservation or by slowing the current rate of decline.     In Way of Explanation I began the revision of my John Nelson Darby biography back in 2003 and part of the first chapter was posted on www.mybrethren.org in 2005 as well as my work in progress “Research Papers”. That site has been offline now since November 2017. To continue to make the material accessible to persons still interested Michael Schneider was so kind to post both my Research Papers and the revised first chap- ter on his website at www.bruederbewegung.de. He brought both items to- gether into one file and into the much more appealing format typical for his site. At the same he checked the validity of the hyperlinks to websites I had referred to in the texts and exchanged them where necessary. For this and other correc- tions I am very grateful to him. The present paper is a revision of the revised first chapter which was posted on the www.bruederbewegung.de site. I have added more material as well as illus- trations to it and Michael and I both thought it would be better to separate it from the Research Papers (they remain available as an extra file) as a standalone file. In doing so I have used a different format from that initially used by Michael, but thank him once again for his proofreading of the text. The present work is not one for commercial or profit purposes, but rather to make material available to other researchers. Nevertheless I have endeavored to obtain permission for all images used here where I was not sure if they are in the public domain or not.
