Apart from the usual concerns – mostly articulated in the media – on the radicalization of Muslim youth, their failure to integrate into mainstream society and so forth, a vast body of academic literature on Islam and Muslims in Europe has sprung up since the late 1990s. This discourse and body of literature on Muslims in Europe, however, are confined to the west of the continent, viz. the old EU. This gives the impression that Europe stops at the banks of the Oder. Central and Eastern Europe – both new EU members and other countries – has been placed outside the realm of discourse, i.e. outside Europe. That is why it seems proper to let Central and Eastern Europe have its say. This book aims to fill this gap by describing Muslim communities and their expe­ riences in Central and Eastern Europe, both in countries with marginal Muslim pop­ ulations, often not exceeding 1% (e.g. Hungary and Lithuania), and in countries with significant

Middle Ages 500-1000 1 3 The Dark Age Church Period of Barbarian Invasions AD 500—1000 Introduction With the endorsement of the Emperor and obligatory church membership for all Roman citizens across the empire, Roman Christianity continued to change the nature of the Church, in stead of visa versa. The humble beginnings were soon forgotten in the luxurious halls and civil power of the highest courts and assemblies of the known world. Who needs spiritual power when you can have civil power? The transition from being the persecuted to the persecutor, from the powerless to the powerful with Imperial and divine authority brought with it the inevitable seeds of corruption. Some say that Christianity won the known world in the first five centuries, but a closer look may reveal that the world had won Christianity as well, and that, in much less time. The year 476 usually marks the end of the Christian Roman Empire in the West.

Case Studies in Transethnic Communication by Exchange of Terminology for Elementary Spiritual Concepts of Ethic Groups By Fee-Alexandra Haase• Abstract Methodology and Objects: Methodologically, from a diachronic linguistics perspective regarding the concept of the shin, spirits in folk belief in China and neighbouring cultures, we compare texts that comprise meanings a) historically in the local language and b) compared to the meanings of equivalent terms in languages of other cultures. Comparing sources of this belief, we examine if and how the shin belief can serve as an example of communication across cultural borders including practical forms of worshipping. Argumentation: We argue that the concept of the shin is across cultural and national borders a result from folk culture transcending political or cultural borders transmitted via migration of ethnic groups. • Dr. Fee-Alexandra Haase, Assoc. On the other hand, the practice of worshipping is similar. Conclusions: A spiritual concept like shin varies in practice in different areas.

    Human Rights of Women Wearing the Veil in Western Europe Research Paper I. Introduction The present paper analyses legislation, policies, and case-law surrounding religious attire in a number of countries in Western Europe and how they affect the human rights of women and girls who wear the veil in Western Europe. It also more broadly analyses discrimination and violence experienced by women wearing the veil in Europe learning from their own voice. Throughout the paper, the terminology ‘veil’ is used to refer to a variety of religious attire worn mostly, but not exclusively, by Muslim women. There are different types of clothing that cover the body. This research is focused on manifestations of veils that are the subject of regulation in several Western European Countries. They include the hijab (a piece of clothing that covers the head and neck, but not the face), niqab (a piece of clothing that covers the face, where only the eyes are visible), burqa (a piece of clothing that covers both the face and eyes), jilbab (a loose piece of clothing that covers the body from head to toe), or abaya, kaftan, kebaya (a loose, often black, full body cover overcoat). The head and body covers are often combined. In several countries, some of these clothing are based on traditional costumes rather than religion and are often worn by rural communities in the countries of origins. The paper also uses the terminology ‘full-face veil’ or ‘face-covering veil’ to refer to both niqab and burqa. Furthermore, it refers to burkini, a swimsuit that covers the body from head to ankles, completed by a dress.

The practitioner of this knowledge is bound by several conditions and agreement with the Weretiger and this knowledge are still in practice generation by generation even after the Islamisation of the Malay Archipelago.

    Eugeniusz Grzegorz Wiązowski1 Kardynał Stefan Wyszyński jako inspirator i protektor rozwoju życia religijnego na Pomorzu Zachodnim Wstęp W 1946 r. po czasowym uchyleniu unii personalnej Gniezna z Poznaniem, kard. Hlond mianowany został metropolitą warszawskim, nadal pozostając gnieźnieńskim2. Odtąd prymas urzędował głównie w Warszawie. Ten stan trwał także w czasie piastowania tej godności przez prymasa Stefana Wyszyń­ skiego (1948 - 1981), który odegrał fundamentalną rolę w powojennej historii naszej ojczyzny, jako duchowy przywódca narodu i obrońca wiary. Kard. Wy­ szyński, więziony przez władze Polskiej Rzeczypospolitej Ludowej wykazał się niezłomnością3. Obronił dla Kościoła polskiego wyjątkową pozycję w blo­ ku wschodnim. Czterokrotnie brał udział w konklawe jako członek kolegium kardynalskiego. Przyczynił się także do wyboru Karola Wojtyły na tron papie­ ski w 1978 r.4 i został uznany za jednego z najwybitniejszych Polaków XX w.5. Pogrzeb, który odbył się 31 maja, zgromadził tysiące ludzi. Pochowa­ no go w kamiennym sarkofagu w bazylice archikatedralnej św. Jana Chrzcicie­ la w Warszawie, kilka lat później został przeniesiony do kaplicy nazwanej jego imieniem. W 1986 r., tj. zaledwie pięć lat po śmierci rozpoczął się jego proces beatyfikacyjny.
