Adjudicator Biographies Grand National Championships November 13-16, 2013 ⋅ Lucas Oil Stadium, Indianapolis 2013 FALL CHAMPIONSHIPS MUSIC PANEL (alphabetical by last name) Joe Allison, Richmond, KY Dr. Joseph H. Allison is currently Professor of Music at Eastern Kentucky University, serving as the Director of Bands and Graduate Conducting Activities. He taught in the public high schools for 18 years, where ensembles under his direction regularly appeared in regional and national settings. His Sumter (South Carolina) High School Bands were the first internationally to be awarded both the Sudler Flag and Sudler Shield for concert and marching excellence. Dr. Allison is in demand as an adjudicator, clinician and consultant for concert, marching and jazz events throughout North America, Europe and Japan. George Boulden, Richmond, KY George Boulden is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Kentucky where he serves as the conductor of the Symphony Band, teaches conducting, instructs in applications of music technology and teaches the instrumental music education seminar. Previously, Mr. Boulden served as the Director of the Wildcat Marching Band and Basketball Pep Band from 1995-2008. He taught public school for nine years in South Carolina and Florida before joining the faculty of the school of music at UK in 1995. He has served as an adjudicator, clinician, and guest conductor throughout the United States and Canada. Mr. Boulden also serves as editor of the Kentucky Music Educators Association state music education journal, the Bluegrass Music News, and was most recently honored as the recipient of the 2011 KMEA College/University Teacher of the Year award. Wayne Dillon, Hellertown, PA Wayne Dillon is currently the Director of Bands at the Upper Academy High School in Elizabeth, New Jersey. Mr. Dillon holds a master’s degree in jazz performance from The University of Miami, Florida and completed honors fine arts and education degrees from York University in Toronto, Canada. He has been awarded the State of New Jersey Governor’s teacher recognition award for his work with the music program at Elizabeth High School. He is an active performer and recording artist, an adjudicator for Drum Corps International and has judged the national championships for both Bands of America and DCI over the past 21 years. Mr. Dillon has served as the brass caption head with the Boston Crusaders Drum and Bugle Corps, on the staff of the nine-time world champion Cadets of Bergen County and the US Army All American Marching Band. Nola Jones, Nashville, TN Dr. Nola Jones is the Coordinator of Music at Metropolitan Nashville Public Schools. Dr. Jones also served as the Director of Bands and Associate Professor of Music Education at the University of Tennessee at Martin. Dr. Jones maintains an active schedule as a guest conductor, adjudicator, and clinician for concert bands, marching bands and honor ensembles, including the US Army Field Band. She has appeared nationally in 38 of the United States and internationally in Canada, Japan, the Netherlands and Singapore. At the request of MENC: The National Association for Music Education, she was the Director of the 2010 and 2011 US Army All-American Band. Dr. Jones' professional affiliations include NAfME (MENC), TMEA, TBA, West Tennessee School Band and Orchestra Association, NBA, CBDNA, Phi Beta Mu, Sigma Alpha Iota, Tau Beta Sigma and Kappa Kappa Psi. Dr. Jones actively adjudicates for Drum Corps International, Bands of America, and Winter Guard International. Dr. Jones received the Bachelor of Music Education degree from Mississippi State University and the Master of Music Education degree from Mississippi College. She received her Doctorate of Musical Arts in wind band conducting from the University of South Carolina where she was a student of Dr. William J. Moody. Page 1 of 6 Jay Kennedy, Holliston, MA Jay Kennedy’s career encompasses varied and successful experiences as a composer, arranger, producer, performer, educator, and administrative leader. Mr. Kennedy is currently vice president for academic affairs/vice provost at Berklee College of Music in Boston, Massachusetts. Mr. Kennedy received the Doctor of Philosophy degree from Boston College, and the Master of Music and Bachelor of Music Education degrees from Northwestern University. Mr. Kennedy has composed, arranged, and produced music for hundreds of television and radio commercials, for which he has received numerous awards. His music has also been heard in feature films, including Wayne’s World, Electric Horseman, Fast Break and Lethal Weapon 2, and in a variety of television series, most recently including One Tree Hill, Judging Amy, and Felicity. A veteran of the recording industry, Mr. Kennedy has written and produced music for Sheryl Crow, Siedah Garrett, James Ingram, Patti Austin, Little Richard, Stanley Clarke, Brenda Russell, Dave Grusin, and Singers Unlimited. He was a Grammy Award finalist in 2002 for arrangements on the recording, Virtuosi, by Gary Burton and Makoto Ozone. His published compositions include works for concert band, percussion ensemble, and marching band. Mr. Kennedy is an active adjudicator for marching band, drum corps, and indoor percussion competitions, has written for several drum and bugle corps, and composed the themes for the drum Crops International (DCI) championship broadcasts and DVDs. He was elected to the DCI Hall of Fame in 2007 for longtime contributions as an adjudicator, judge administrator, arranger, and composer. David McGrath, Woodstock, GA David McGrath has directed high school bands the past 23 years in both the states of Michigan and Georgia. Bands under his direction have received numerous honors which include 11 appearances at the Michigan State Marching Band Championships (capturing nine state championships); being consistent finalists at BOA events (The Kell HS Marching Band is a nine-time Regional and Super Regional Finalist, and the Plymouth-Canton Educational Park Marching Band was named the 1999 BOA Grand National Champion); invitations and performances at numerous regional and national concert festivals and clinics (including state music convention performances in both Michigan and Georgia, performances at the 2000, 2006 and 2007 National Concert Band Festivals and the 2010 Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic), as well as performing an hour-long concert for President Bill Clinton (1996). Mr. McGrath is a four-time recipient of the National Band Association Citation of Excellence, and has also been named a “Claes Nobel Educator of Distinction” by the National Society of High School Scholars. Mr. McGrath is active as a concert band, drum corps and marching band adjudicator and clinician. He is a member of the GMEA and the MENC. Mr. McGrath is currently the Director of Bands at Kennesaw Mountain High School. John Phillips, Markham, Ontario, Canada John Phillips teaches undergraduate conducting and graduate music education classes at the University of Western Ontario. For the past three years he was responsible for the curriculum review and implementation of the Arts at the Ministry of Education for the province of Ontario. Mr. Phillips is in demand as an expert on marching music education. He is a member of the MENC Blue Ribbon Panel on marching music standards. In 2010 he chaired the inaugural Marching Music Academy for the MENC Music Education Week and continues in that capacity. He received the 2010 MENC award for Excellence in Marching Music Education. Mr. Phillips has contributed articles to numerous scholarly journals, and most recently provided a composition analysis for volume eight of the highly acclaimed series Teaching Music Through Performance in Band, published by GIA. He is an adjudicator and clinician for Bands of America, and serves as Judge Administrator for Drum Corps International. Michael Rubino, Morgan Hill, CA Mike Rubino was the Director of Bands at Live Oak High School, leading the Emerald Regime Band & Color Guard to two Bands of America Grand National Championships. The Band and Guard has accumulated over 1000 awards. Mr Rubino’s judging experience includes ISSMA, BOA, Michigan State Competitive Marching Band Association, the Oregon Band Directors Association, Drum Corps West, and Drum Corps International. He has been the judge coordinator for DCI Pacific since 1994. Mr. Rubino is a member of Music for All’s Bands of America Hall of Fame. W. Dale Warren, Fayetteville, AR W. Dale Warren is Director of Concert Bands and Professor of Music in the University of Arkansas Department of Music, where his primary responsibility is conducting the Wind Symphony. Professor Warren received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Austin Peay State University in Clarksville, Tennessee and received his Master of Music Page 2 of 6 Education degree from the University of Kentucky. He has guest conducted All-District, All-Region and All-State honor bands, as well as several university bands in 35 states. In addition to Music for All, he also serves as an adjudicator for Musicfest Orlando. Professor Warren serves as chairman of the John Philip Sousa Foundation’s Sudler Shield Award Committee, is a John Philip Sousa Foundation Board Member and is a Past President of the Southeastern Conference Band Directors Association. Professor Warren’s affiliations include NBA, Phi Beta Mu Bandmasters Fraternity, NAfME (formerly MENC), CBDNA, World Association of Symphonic Bands and Ensembles, Conductors Guild, ABA, AMEA, Arkansas School Band and Orchestra
