  • First, Three Notes from the Dean: … and Two Invitations from Deborah
Dear Friend of the Cathedral, Here we are at the beginning of a long, hot, relaxed summer, delighting in the permission to reconnect with friends and family. However, most church activities are on holiday while we refresh our energies, so the newsletter too will be on hiatus until the end of August, with a possible letter in late July to remind us of Pride events. This week’s letter is a bumper issue which you can read at your leisure over the next few weeks. Please be sure to read the profile of a special member of our community in the last part of the newsletter. First, three notes from the Dean: • Livestreaming option From this Sunday, we will start to Livestream our three Sunday morning services on YouTube as well as continuing to use Zoom for now. You will be able to reach our YouTube channel at www.montrealcathedral.ca/live/ It would be helpful if you could subscribe to the channel and ‘like’ it. This would not only mean that you would be informed when new livestreams are starting or videos are being added if you wish, but it will also give the cathedral additional options for running the channel. Archival videos of previous services, evensongs, music and other educational material will be kept there, as will sermons. • Survey Thank you to all who completed the survey. This is now closed. We are working on analysing the data collected and will be in touch with those who have agreed to take part in small group discussions over the coming weeks.

  • Univ Online Catalogues
1 UNIV ONLINE CATALOGUES UC:E4 The Rectory of Arncliffe, Yorkshire, 14 th -20 th centuries Arncliffe is a village in North Yorkshire, situated about fifteen miles north of Skipton, in the remote area of Littondale. The ecclesiastical parish of Arncliffe comprised several villages in Littondale in addition to Arncliffe itself, namely Halton Gill, Hawkswick, Litton as well as some others in neighbouring Wharfedale, namely Buckden, Hubberholme and Yockenthwaite. High hills separate the two dales, and access was not always easy in winter. In addition to the main church at Arncliffe, there were also chapels at Halton Gill and Hubberholme, although the former was of little consequence before a major rebuilding in 1848. The advowson of Arncliffe was in the gift of the Percy family, the Earls of Northumberland, until Henry Percy, second Earl of Northumberland (1394–1455), gave it to University College in 1443. He also arranged for the appropriation of the rectory (and with it the right to collect the rector’s tithes) to pass to University College, in return for their appointing a vicar to the parish. The reason for Percy’s generosity is not known: Antony Wood suggested that the university had suggested he benefit a College which, as well as being the oldest in Oxford, also had strong north-eastern links (see W. Carr, University College , p. 62), but that may be mere guesswork. Percy certainly expected the north-east to benefit from his gift: as set out in UC:E4/2D/1 below, the money from the tithes was to finance three Bachelors or Masters planning to read theology from the dioceses of Durham, Carlisle or York, with special preference to be given to candidates from Northumberland.

In territorial terms it was a time of loss. The diocese of Ripon was founded in 1836 taking with it some of the most heavily populated new industrial regions of West Yorkshire, Bradford, Halifax and Leeds. By 1836 the archbishop had also lost his peculiar jurisdiction over Hexhamshire and in 1837 the archdeaconry of Nottingham was transferred to the diocese of Lincoln. Even though a time of territorial loss for the diocese, it was a period of increased church building. When changing expectations of the parochial role of the clergy, the demand for clerical residence and the provision of a living wage for stipendary curates and increased parochial demands for preaching and the sacraments within a broadening definition of parochial work are added to this the period is seen to be one of repeated adaptation and change. ORDINATION- THE SOURCES From the middle of the eighteenth century onwards the information recorded in the York Institution Act Books can be validated and expanded by reference to the bundles of papers submitted by the candidates themselves prior to their taking orders.

Rev. A. Bruce Stavert -Eveque bishop@q uebec.a nglican.ca June 21,2004 To: The Council of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada From: Bishop Bruce Stavert, Bishop of Quebec Re: Election of a Metropolitan Dear Members of Council, I need to inform the members of the Provincial Council that I have received from Archbishop Andrew Hutchison a letter of resignation as Archbishop of Montreal and as Metropolitan of the Ecclesiastical Province of Canada. The resignation is to take effect July 31, 2004 and when the members of the House of Bishops have accepted the resignation. This resignation, as you will know, is the result of Archbishop Hutchison's Election as Primate of the Anglican Church of Canada. Canon II of the Canons of the Province of Canada says that "when the office of Metropolitan becomes vacant the diocesan bishop senior by consecration shall summon the Provincial Council to meet as an electoral college within six months of the vacancy occurring." The next regular meeting of the Provincial Council is scheduled for September 23-26,2004 in Gander, Newfoundland. I therefore summon the Provincial Council to meet as an electoral college on Thursday, September 23,2004 at St. Martin's Cathedral in Gander for the purpose of Electing a Metropolitan for the province, the election to be preceded by a celebration of the Holy Eucharist. I have requested the Secretaries of the Provincial Synod to distribute this notice of summons with their distribution of information and agenda for the meeting of council.

  • HISTORY of the ANCIENT and HISTORIC Church of S. Andrew
PREFACE HISTORY Some no long- time since, I read in a newspaper or OF THE magazine (the name of which I have now quite forgotten) a suggestion, which I then thought a very happy one, for ANCIENT AND HISTORIC the consideration of the clergy who had charge of old and interesting Parish Churches. It was briefly that they Church of S. Andrew should, so far as opportunity afforded, collate from the Kildwick- in - Craven various sources of information, and write for the benefit of future generations, a short and concise history of their Parish and its Church. BY In this they would, of course, be but humble imitators of the REV. E. W. BRERETON, M.A. monks of the middle ages, to whom, notwithstanding VICAR, 1901-8 accusations of indolence and sloth by their Protestant enemies amid the violent upheaval of religious forces at the With Illustrations Reformation, we must yet acknowledge ourselves deeply indebted for their labours in recording the facts of their times. CROSSHILLS: I was then in charge of a Parish in the City of Bradford, the PUBLISHED BY GEORGE BOTTOMLEY, 1909 Church of which had just kept its jubilee, and which therefore had practically no history to record. I made, however, a mental note of the suggestion, and thought to myself that if 1 ever the privilege was afforded me of being the Rector or Vicar EDWARD WILLIAM BRERETON, M.A., VICAR. of an old Parish Church, I would do my best to carry it out. The Vicarage, Kildwick-in- Craven, The ancient and historic Church of S.
