Thank you Heather, Lewis and Kyra would like to say a huge thank you to Father Liam, Mark Drummond, the Men’s Shed, Tahilla Ladies Club, the musicians and wider commu- nity for all their support and kindness shown during Michael’s funeral. Thank you also for your very generous donation to Kerry Hospice.

Sneem Men's Shed are mourning the loss of their esteemed chairman Michael Smith. Michael so loved the Men's Shed that his dying wish was to be waked there, which he was. Michael was a very gentle man, with a brilliant brain and had many experiences from his travels throughout the world with his job as a geologist. He was also a very simple man who loved nothing more than swapping stories with all his friends at the Shed. Michael is a huge loss to his loving wife Heather and family, to the Shed and to the whole community. May God give you rest Michael.

Page 3 The 15th Kerry Sneem Scouts Group Peace Light 2019 In Palestine an eternal flame burns in the Church of the Nativity in the little town of Bethlehem – this is the place where Mary and Joseph went, two thousand years ago and where the baby Jesus was born. In December a small ceremony was held in the Grotto where a Palestini- an and an Israeli Scout took a light from the flame and carried it to Tel Aviv airport. The light was brought to Vi- enna where a Peace Light Service was held. A young Scout carried the ‘flame’ to the front of the Church and lit the Vienna Peace Candle. Representatives of Scout associations from all over the World were then invited to light their lan- terns from this candle and to take this symbol of Peace home to their own coun- tries. 15 th Kerry Sneem collected the light from 2 nd Scouts in Tralee, on December 21 st and shared this light of Peace with our community at St. Michael’s Church, St. Patrick’s Church and the Church of Transfiguration over Christmas. The light which we shared was carried by Scouts, by train and by car, bus and on foot through Austria, Switzerland and France and through the Channel Tunnel over to Dover in England. The light next travelled to Holyhead where it was brought on Stena Line by Scouts over the Irish Sea to Dublin. Over the Christmas period the light has been shared by thousands of young people to Churches and other places of Christian worship; to Hospitals and to Hostels for homeless people, across the length and breadth of Ire- land. Members of all sections from Beavers, Cubs, and Scouts took part in the journey of the light of Peace in Sneem and Tahilla. Through facilitation of bring- ing the light to different churches, participating in readings and writing their own reflections. I would like to thank everyone who participated in the event locally and abroad. Especially Fr. Liam O’Brien and Rev Michael Cavanagh who ena- ble the youth to participate in spreading the Light of peace this Christmas. Sheena O’Sullivan 15 th Kerry Sneem , Cub Section Leader

Lucie's School of Piano held their annual Christmas concert in The Loft at Dan Murphy’s Bar on the 20th of December. The atmosphere was cosy and it was amazing to see how much the students improved their skill year after year. The standard of their performances was very high and you couldn’t hear a false note. We listened to some Christmas classics, but also Chopin, Bach, Debussy and some jazz. Special thanks to Sean who lets us use The Loft and also to Kris van Daele for doing the sound system so everyone could hear the piano even in the fur- thest corner of the bar. We can't wait for the next one!

SEAI One Good Idea In October, two teams from the senior classes entered the SEAI One Good Idea competition. One Good Idea aims to help students gain a greater understanding of energy effi- ciency and climate change by challenging them to develop an awareness campaign to creatively make people aware of the simple changes that we can all make in our lives to help address these issues. We are delighted to announce that both teams from our school were successful in stage 1 of the competition and have been selected to attend the Cork Regional Event in the Omniplex Cinema on Monday, 24 th of February 2020. At the event both teams, ‘Lego Life Savers’ and ‘Climate Change Kids’ will pre- sent a Presentation Pitch and deliver their 1 -minute film on the Big Screen to a panel of expert judges. If successful, the children will go on to attend the National Finals in Dublin later in the year. Green Schools This year the theme of our Green School’s Flag is ‘Global Citizenship Travel’. This theme aims to increase the number of students walking, cycling, scooting, using public transport or carpooling to school. It also promotes good health and a more active lifestyle, benefiting not just our environment but our bodies too. During ‘Clean Air Week’ Dave our Green Schools Officer came to visit on Monday 18 th of November. Luckily we have very ded- icated students and parents who embraced this year’s theme and were walking and carpooling to school in November. We did lots of fun activities with Dave to help us understand the im- portance of using environmentally friendly methods of travel. We also played a giant game of snakes and ladders in the hall.

Hospital Visit and Panto The school was invited to visit the residents of Kenmare Community Nursing Unit in December 2019. The children sang songs and played music and brought great joy to all those listening. It was a lovely outing. We then followed on to the Carne- gie Arts Centre to see Santa’s Sooty Christmas. The children had a wonderful time.

Christmas Concert The children and teachers worked together to produce a unique play for the Christmas concert this year. It was very enjoyable. Thanks to everyone who was able to be there. The children also had a chance to give us a glimpse of their individual interests and talents as part of the show. We finished with a ren- dition of Christmas songs and a few tunes on the tin -whistle.

SEAI One Good Idea Competition Everyone is talking about climate change. And we all know it is a serious is- sue. But nobody thinks that they can make a difference themselves. Or can we? Earlier this year when discussing ideas for the “SEAI One Good Idea Competi- tion” we discussed ways that we could help the planet by making little changes in our daily life. We realized that we all could make one small change that would make a huge difference - Shopping and Eating in Season. We are very excited to be one of 5 schools chosen to compete in the regional finals in Cork on Monday 24th February. Different fruits and vegetables can only grow at certain times of the year. Which means that certain fruits and vegetables should only be in shops at cer- tain times of the year. But have you ever not been able to buy strawberries in winter? When fruits and vegetables are out of season, they are injected with pesticides and chemicals that are terrible for your health, and LED grow lights are then used as artificial sunlight which burns so many fossil fuels which are killing the environment. The fruits and vegetables are then imported into Ireland from the other side of the world, which emits more CO 2 than you can count. For example, a recent survey that we conducted in 5 th and 6 th class in our local supermarkets showed that raspberries are out of season and yet they are still in shops. These are coming all the way from Egypt, which by the way is 2,707 air miles away! That is emitting 143,471 pounds of CO 2 just in one trip. The price of the produce that is imported is more expensive than it would be if it were in season. So if you buy and eat in season, you are automatically buy- ing Irish produce, which is benefiting your pocket, your health and your planet. We are trying to convince people to take our pledge to do their best to eat and shop in season. We can make a difference. So can you. We are making a keyring which will help you to shop In season. The keyring will be for sale in the few weeks! Please get in touch if you want to buy one! #goodreasontoeatinseason.

“I pledge to eat and shop in season” We are taking the pledge. Are you? Yours sincerely, Sneem School

Page 15 Sneem TidyTowns We had our first meeting of the new year last Tuesday. We’re delighted to have got the 5 trees planted on the newly resur- faced Sportsfield road with help from , Leader funding and suppliers Nangle & Nieson who grew them at Aherla, Co. Cork. The trees we ended up planting are Pyrus calleryana Chanticleer, an ornamental pear which will have pretty blossom in spring and nice autumn colour. We are get- ting metal surrounds made to further protect them.

We also planted 20m of wildlife friendly hedging behind the Sneem Digital Hub - thanks to Louis, Joe and the CE team.

Our main project for the coming months will be the develop- ment of the Community Orchard behind Seaview and we hope everyone will get involved in choosing the trees and planting and maintaining what we hope will be a great new resource for the village. Feel free to talk to any of the working group or leave a message in the Resource Centre.
