Christmas Craft Fair Due to the ongoing Covid 19 restrictions, the Resource Centre Committee has regretfully decided to cancel this year’s Christmas Craft Fair. Sneem Calendar 2021 Thank you to everyone who sent in photos for the Calendar. The closing date for submission of images is next Monday 5th October. The twelve winners will be announced in the next issue of the Sneem Community Noticeboard. We will let you know when and where the Calendar will be available to buy. Page 3 Community News Sneem Men’s Shed The Men’s Shed enjoyed a pleasant day on Saturday 19th September fishing at the Long Lake - by all accounts everyone caught their lunch! They finished off with a barbeque on Pier Road. A sincere thanks to Una and Damien O'Neill who organised and put it all together with locally sourced fresh products. Harvest Thanksgiving A Harvest Thanksgiving Service will take place in the Little Church in Sneem on Sunday, 11th October at 10am, Covid restrictions applying. Masses We are continuing our Masses in Church and online, weekdays and weekends. The weekday Masses will be announced at weekend Masses. To book a Mass contact the Parish Office by phone, 064 -6645141 and 087 -3480050 or email [email protected] or call in on a Tuesday or Friday from 10am to 4pm. We are blessed to have very reliable volunteers who act as ushers and help at other Church duties, this is greatly appreciated. Our Collections are quite good and numerous people are handing in their envelopes even if they are not at- tending Mass. Our guidelines are to use hand sanitisers, wear masks and keep social distance. To attend Mass on weekday or to share Mass online will suf- fice for weekend Mass. No Black Bags to be put in Trailer Please Page 4 Sneem Resource Centre Our Euroroom, Bookroom, Bric -à-Brac section and Gentlemen's Corner are now open - one person or one family at one time please. Sales will continue to be made at the pass through window between our front room and kitchen. Tea and chat around the kitchen table will have to be on hold for a little longer..... We are also back to our normal opening hours from 10:30am to 3pm from Mon- day to Thursday, and Friday from 10.30am to 2.30pm. Thank you for your pa- tience and understanding! Kenmare and District Gardening Club A meeting of the committee was held in September, the aim being to discuss how we can come together as a club in these difficult times. It was agreed that under the current Covid restrictions our usual policy of a once a month meeting, usually with an outside speaker is not possible for the foreseeable future. It was suggested though that contact could be maintained between club members with visits to member’s gardens on a small scale, adhering to social distancing out- lines, with the occasional visit to gardens and garden centres which are now open. i.e. Dereen Gardens and Deelish nursery – not forgetting of course our own Willowfield who have been a source of pleasure in these difficult times: the club would like to extend our thanks to them. The committee hopes to formulate a programme for 2021, which of course will be dependent on the fluctuating health regulations. In the meantime, enjoy the glories of the autumn garden and ordering and planting your spring bulbs. Kenmare Family Resource Centre Kenmare Family Resource Centre offers the following supports to the community of Sneem: • Low cost counselling as well as art therapy and play therapy for children and young people. • Access to our family support worker and commu- nity development worker. Rainbows is a dedicated free service for children and young people. The Rainbows programme supports children and young people affected by loss because of bereavement, separation or divorce. Kerry. 064 6642790, 087 7086641, Email: [email protected] Page 5 Community News Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI) With winter approaching we thought it appropriate to inform our readers that SEAI offers grants for upgrades which cover about 30 % of the cost to upgrade the insu- lation of a 3 bedroomed house. A €400 grant is available for insulating the attic, whether your space is 40 sq m or 400sq m. if you have a smaller house, you will still get a grant of €400, or the cost of the work if it comes to less than that. Other insu- lation grants include €400 for cavity wall, €1,600 to €2,400 depending on house type, for dry lining and €2,750 to €6,000 for an external wall wrap. Team Hope Christmas Shoebox Appeal The Christmas Shoebox Appeal is now online! Unfortunately, due to the effects of the COVID -19 restrictions, it is not possible to send gift -filled shoeboxes from Ire- land this year. Instead Team Hope will be asking schools, families, friends, commu- nities and businesses to #TeamUpForTeamHope by donating gift -filled shoeboxes for children affected by poverty ONLINE. You can now build your own shoebox online for €20 and get creative with activity sheets, which can be coloured in and uploaded with your donation to tell the child who gets your box a little more about you! We will need your help to spread the word because this year, more than ever, every shoebox counts. Check out https://www.teamhope.ie/ for more information. Trees on the Land Trees on the Land is a cross -border initiative working to establish young native trees across the 32 counties of the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. https://www.treesontheland.com/plant -trees -2021 Applications are open to farmers, smallholders, councils, community groups, schools, colleges, sports clubs, golf clubs, gardeners and other landowners.     The Kerry Way: Self-Guided How to plan your multi-day backpacking trip around Ireland’s scenic Ring of Kerry Many are familiar with the beautiful Ring of Kerry in County Kerry, Ireland, but far fewer are aware that the entire route can be walked instead of driven. Despite The Kerry Way’s status as one of the most popular of Ireland’s National Waymarked Trails, I had more difficulty finding advice to help me prepare for it than I did for hikes in Scotland and the United Kingdom. At approximately 135 miles, it’s also the longest of Ireland’s trails, and in retrospect I’ve noticed that many companies who offer self-guided itineraries actually cut off two whole sections of the route - in my opinion, some of the prettiest sections. In honor of completing my own trek with nothing but online articles and digital apps to guide the way, I thought I’d pay it forward by creating my own budget-minded backpacker’s guide (for the WHOLE route) so that others might benefit from what I learned. If you prefer to stay in B&Bs rather than camping or budget accommodations, I’ve outlined how you can swap out some of my choices for your own.     Sneem Community Notice Board Issue 198 12th July 2018 Monthly FREE Royal Visit to Derrynane On Friday 15th June, the Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall visited Derrynane House, Gardens and Beach as part of their visit to Ireland. Pupils from Caherdaniel, Sneem and Tahilla National Schools were invited to take part in a beach workshop by Sea Synergy of Waterville where they demonstrated how they were sieving for microplastics that showed the pervasiveness of plastic in our oceans. The pupils from Sneem and Tahilla spoke to the royal couple about their floats in the Sneem St. Patrick’s Day Parade which fea- tured Tilly the plastic whale and Turning the Tide on Plastic and their awareness of and concern for the pollution of our seas. They said the couple were very friendly and they had a fabulous day. Photos by Michael Donnelly.     Ring of Kerry Itinerary THE RING OF KERRY DRIVE We've driven the Ring of Kerry a few times now and it never gets old. I may not say that in a few years when every single person who visits us in Ireland wants to do a Ring of Kerry road trip but for now, let's say visiting the Ring of Kerry is an Irish rite of passage. From Donegal, it is quite a drive and it takes us around 6 hours but we decided upon a few other stops on our road trip. We drive right through Sligo which is one of Ireland's most underappreciated counties and it is spectacular. From Yeats grave to the beautiful surfing beaches Sligo is sensational. From Sligo, we headed straight to Galway City where we stayed a couple of days to enjoy the craic and the crowds. Then from Galway, we went onto to Tralee which is where we began our Ring of Kerry epic adventure. We stopped in Tralee for some epic fish and chips at Quinlan's Seafood Bar absolutely bloody spectacular food so fresh it was practically still flapping. At Quinlan's, we also heard for the very first time a true Kerry accent which is quite a thick Irish one. The slang used in Kerry is also different than the rest of Ireland so if someone calls you a "lad" and your female that's the Kerry way. However, by subsequently removing the second emergency ambulance from Killarney the Government is putting lives at risk in all of South Kerry. People are suffering, as the Kenmare ambulance has had to cover the loss of ambulance services in Killarney and in Millstreet. I am fighting, through the HSE, for the return of emergency ambulance services that have been withdrawn from the CAMPAIGNING FOR THE RETURN OF EMERGENCY AMBULANCE SERVICES TO KERRY’ county.     Hardman Triathlon Route: Bike (180km) Outline map of the Ring of Kerry Starting from Transition 1 in the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club you will make your way up the road towards the exit. At the exit from the Killarney Golf and Fishing Club, you are at a T Junction with the N72. You are required to stop and put a foot down before you cross the road. Once across the road you proceed towards Killarney and navigate your way through the town. In the first 5km, you come first to Ballydowney Roundabout. Take the 3rd exit to Killarney Town Centre. At the Cathedral, keep straight on. At the Plaza Hotel, follow the arrows as in the map below. At the Golden Gates Roundabout take the 2nd exit on N71 dir Kenmare. Immediately afterwards is the traffic lights at Ross Road and a little further on the Woodlawn X traffic lights. Moll’s Gap Past Muckross House the road begins to undulate before rearing up as you take on the spectacular winding 8km climb to Moll’s Gap. This climb takes you through Killarney National Park with stunning vistas over the Lakes of Killarney. You will climb approx 250m over the course of the 8km.
