Que soient remerciés, collectivement, tous les membres du jury qui ont participé au bon fonctionnement des épreuves écrites et orales du concours de l’Agrégation externe d’Anglais 2015 et qui ont par leurs efforts contribué au recrutement d’enseignants rompus à tous les exercices de l’Anglistique. Remarques préliminaires Les remarques qui suivent reprennent un bon nombre d’observations faites dans les rapports précédents. Un bilan chiffré de la session 2015 suit l’avant-propos. L’objectif d’un rapport de concours consiste avant tout à aider les candidats à se préparer aux épreuves de la session suivante, épreuves qui auront lieu lors de la prochaine session, en mars 2016, pour les écrits, et en mai-juillet 2016, pour les oraux. Cette aide se présente sous deux formes : des conseils méthodologiques et des propositions de corrigés afin que tous les candidats puissent lire ce que le jury attend d’eux et la façon d’aborder le concours dans les meilleures conditions possibles. Des exemples de bonnes présentations de candidats ont été intégrés aux propositions de corrigés. Tout est mis en œuvre pour aider les candidats pendant leurs épreuves mais quelques conseils d’organisation s’imposent. Il est vivement conseillé à tous les candidats qui se préparent sérieusement au concours de rester totalement disponibles entre la dernière semaine de mai et le début du mois de juillet 2016. Lorsque cela s’avère nécessaire, le directoire fait tout son possible pour modifier les convocations de candidats qui ne peuvent se présenter aux oraux le jour prévu pour des raisons médicales ou familiales majeures. En cas de chevauchement avec un autre concours de l’Éducation Nationale, le directoire modifie la date de la convocation. Que les candidats qui se présentent à plusieurs concours n’aient pas d’inquiétude à ce sujet. Il est en revanche impératif que les futurs candidats signalent au gestionnaire du concours au Ministère et à la présidente du concours, avant la proclamation des résultats de l’admissibilité, leurs indisponibilités pendant la période allant de la fin mai à début juillet. Si celles-ci sont dûment justifiées, le directoire en tiendra compte au moment de l’établissement des convocations. Parmi les « indisponibilités » sont acceptées les convocations à des auditions pour l’obtention d’un contrat doctoral mais il faut que les candidats se manifestent au plus vite auprès de la présidente dès qu’ils en connaissent la date, anticipant à nouveau sur l’admissibilité. Il est plus facile au directoire de vérifier que le candidat est admissible que de reprogrammer une convocation car les créneaux disponibles sont rares. Toutes les autres demandes (par rapport à un handicap par exemple) doivent être faites directement au gestionnaire du concours au Ministère. Aucun report ne sera accepté pour convenance personnelle comme par exemple le besoin d’obtenir un temps supplémentaire de révision en raison d’activités professionnelles, ou encore la programmation d’un séjour de vacances pendant la période des épreuves d’admission parce que le candidat ne pensait pas être admissible. Les candidats doivent prendre conscience que l’inscription à un concours exige un engagement ferme et des contraintes. Mieux vaut donc prendre connaissance des dates liées aux épreuves du concours bien en amont. Maquette du concours Avant toute chose il est important de bien connaître les épreuves du concours que l’on prépare et les candidats trouveront ci-après les dispositions essentielles publiées dans le JORF du 6 janvier 2010 concernant les concours de recrutement, arrêté du 28 décembre 2009 (révisé au 1 er septembre 2012 puis révisé par l’arrêté du 25 juillet 2014 – NOR : MENH1417069A) fixant les sections et les modalités d’organisation des concours de l’Agrégation. Suivre le lien suivant : http://www.education.gouv.fr/cid51476/epreuves-agregation-externe-section-langues-vivantes- etrangeres-anglais.html La session 2015 a vu un changement important dans la nature des épreuves proposées puisque l’épreuve AFER (Agir en fonctionnaire de l’Etat et de façon éthique et responsable) a disparu en tant qu’épreuve à proprement parler. Elle ne fera donc plus l’objet d’une épreuve d’admission. En revanche, l’esprit de cette épreuve demeure et le site du Ministère indique que « le jury pose les questions qu’il juge utiles lui permettant d’apprécier la capacité du candidat, en qualité de futur agent du service public d’éducation, à prendre en compte dans le cadre de son enseignement la 3 2015 © www.education.gouv.fr construction des apprentissages des élèves et leurs besoins, à se représenter la diversité des conditions d’exercie du métier, à en connaître de façon réfléchie le contexte, les différentes dimensions et les valeurs qui le portent, dont celles de la République ». Ces questions sont désormais posées dans le cadre de l’épreuve hors-programme (EHP), à la suite de l’entretien concernant la présentation du sujet d’EHP et le déroulement de cet exercice, baptisé PROF, est clairement expliqué aux candidats lors de la réunion d’accueil. L’exercice s’est déroulé de façon satisfaisante lors de la session 2015 et sera reconduit pour la session 2016. Les épreuves et les coefficients s’établissent comme suit pour 2016 : Epreuves écrites d’admissibilité 1) Dissertation en français sur un sujet de littérature ou de civilisation dans le cadre d’un programme ( durée : sept heures ; coefficient 1 ) 2) Commentaire de texte en anglais sur un sujet de civilisation ou de littérature dans le cadre d’un programme ( durée : six heures ; coefficient 1 ) Lorsque la dissertation en français porte sur le programme de littérature, le commentaire de texte en anglais porte sur le programme de civilisation ou vice-versa . 3) Composition de linguistique (durée : six heures, coefficient 1 ) Cette épreuve prend appui sur un support textuel unique en langue anglaise. Elle est destinée à apprécier les connaissances des candidats dans les deux domaines suivants : a) Phonologie : le candidat doit, en anglais, répondre à une série de questions et, notamment, expliciter certaines règles fondamentales ; b) Grammaire : le candidat doit, en français, expliciter trois points de grammaire soulignés dans le texte et répondre à une question de portée générale. 4) Epreuve de traduction : thème et version (durée six heures ; coefficient 2 ) Les textes à traduire sont distribués simultanément aux candidats, au début de l’épreuve. Les candidats rendent deux copies séparées et chaque traduction entre pour moitié dans la notation. Il n’y a pas de temps imparti pour chaque traduction. Les candidats décident de consacrer le temps qui leur convient à chacune d’entre elles dans les limites de la durée de l’ensemble de l’épreuve. Total des coefficients des épreuves écrites : 5 Epreuves orales d’admission 1) Explication de texte (option A) / Commentaire (options B et C) en anglais suivis d’un entretien en anglais. Un seul sujet est proposé au candidat. Durée de la préparation : deux heures ; durée de l’épreuve : quarante-cinq minutes maximum ; coefficient : 2 Durée de la présentation par le candidat : trente minutes maximum Durée de l’entretien avec le jury : quinze minutes maximum 2) Leçon en anglais portant sur l’option A, B ou C choisie par le candidat, suivie d’un entretien en français. Le candidat a le choix entre deux sujets qui peuvent être de nature notionnelle ou citationnelle. Durée de la préparation : cinq heures ; durée de l’épreuve : quarante-cinq minutes maximum ; coefficient : 2 Durée de la présentation par le candidat : trente minutes maximum Durée de l’entretien avec le jury : quinze minutes maximum 3) Compréhension et Restitution (CR) Le candidat écoute une première fois dans son intégralité un document authentique en langue anglaise d’une durée de trois minutes maximum. Après une seconde écoute fragmentée, il propose la restitution orale de ce contenu en français, de façon consécutive à l’audition de chaque fragment. Cet exercice est suivi d’un entretien en français avec le jury. Durée de préparation : aucune. Durée de l’épreuve : 30 minutes maximum. Coefficient : 2 4) Epreuve hors programme (EHP) en anglais 4 2015 © www.education.gouv.fr Cette épreuve est constituée d’un exposé oral à partir d’un dossier comprenant plusieurs documents, suivi d’un entretien en anglais avec le jury. Le candidat propose une lecture et une interprétation des documents qui lui ont été remis, mettant en évidence ce qui les relie et les éclaire mutuellement. Durée de la préparation : cinq heures ; durée de l’épreuve : quarante-cinq minutes maximum ; coefficient : 2 Durée de présentation du candidat : vingt minutes maximum Durée de l’entretien avec le jury : vingt-cinq minutes maximum. Enfin, une cinquième note globale d’expression orale en anglais est attribuée pour les première, deuxième et quatrième épreuves orales ( coefficient 2 ).

For residents of the city of Mandeville, Louisiana, stories about the town’s founding father, Bernard de Marigny de Mandeville are widely known. When he and his siblings inherited their father’s vast estate (some historians claim his holdings may have been worth $7 million or around $200 million in today’s value) he was just shy of 16 years old. Bernard had seen a life of indulgence and privilege like few other teenagers ever had. His mentors did their best to educate him and help him mature before he arrived at the legal age of maturity. As a 21-year-old in 1806 New Orleans, he began subdividing the family’s plantation there into residential lots that would become the suburb known as the Fauberg Marigny. Two decades later, Bernard had by then helped facilitate the winning of The War of 1812 and served as President of the Louisiana State Senate. He began looking toward the north shore of Lake Pontchartrain as an area where he might purchase and again subdivide land. His goal was to create a resort town near pine forests, the lakefront, and fresh-water bayous. While laying out the plans for his little city, he created street names to honor various statesmen and war heroes.

    The Music of Louisiana: Cajuns, Creoles and Zydeco Carole Poindexter-Sylvers INTRODUCTION The music and cuisine of southern Louisiana experienced a renaissance during the 1980s. Zydeco musicians and recording artists made appearances on morning talk shows, Cajun and Creole restaurants began to spring up across the nation, and celebrity chefs such Paul Prudhomme served as a catalyst for the surge in interest. What was once unknown by the majority of Americans and marginalized within the non-French speaking community in Louisiana had now become a national trend. The Acadians, originally from Acadia, Nova Scotia, were expelled from Canada and gradually became known as Cajuns. These Acadians or Cajuns proudly began teaching the lingua franca in their francophone communities as Cajun French, published children‘s books in Cajun French and school curricula in Cajun French. Courses were offered at local universities in Cajun studies and Cajun professors published scholarly works about Cajuns. Essentially, the once marginalized peasants had become legitimized. Cajuns as a people, as a culture, and as a discipline were deemed worthy of academic study stimulating even more interest. The Creoles of color (referring to light-skinned, French-speaking Negroid people born in Louisiana or the French West Indies), on the other hand, were not acknowledged to the same degree as the Cajuns for their autonomy. It would probably be safe to assume that many people outside of the state of Louisiana do not know that there is a difference between Cajuns and Creoles – that they are a homogeneous ethnic or cultural group. Creoles of color and Louisiana Afro-Francophones have been lumped together with African American culture and folkways or southern folk culture.

    Jezebel Stereotype MORE PICTURES Perhaps she remembers her great-great grandmother who wanted to protest but only rolled her eyes and willed herself not to scream when the white man mounted her from behind. --Andrea Williams(2001) The portrayal of black women as lascivious by nature is an enduring stereotype. The descriptive words associated with this stereotype are singular in their focus: seductive, alluring, worldly, beguiling, tempting, and lewd. Historically, white women, as a category, were portrayed as models of self-respect, self-control, and modesty - even sexual purity, but black women were often portrayed as innately promiscuous, even predatory. This depiction of black women is signified by the name Jezebel.1 K. Sue Jewell (1993), a contemporary sociologist, conceptualized the Jezebel as a tragic mulatto - "thin lips, long straight hair, slender nose, thin figure and fair complexion"(p. 46). This conceptualization is too narrow. It is true that the "tragic mulatto" and "Jezebel" share the reputation of being sexually seductive, and both are antithetical to the desexualized Mammy caricature; nevertheless, it is a mistake to assume that only, or even mainly, fair-complexioned black women were sexually objectified by the larger American society. From the early 1630s to the present, black American women of all shades have been portrayed as hypersexual "bad-black- girls."2 Jewell's conceptualization is based on a kernel of historical truth. Many of the slavery-era blacks sold into prostitution were mulattoes. Also, freeborn light-skinned black women sometimes became the willing concubines of wealthy white southerners. This system, called placage, involved a formal arrangement for the white suitor/customer to financially support the black woman and her children in exchange for her long-term sexual services.

Matthews In Faulkner’s Absalom, Absalom! (1936), Thomas Sutpen relates how, as the overseer of a sugar plantation in Haiti, he put down a rebellion at the outset of his career as a new-world planter. He explains that at grst he did not register his danger; a US Southerner in the West Indies, Sutpen failed to “know, comprehend, what he must have been seeing every day because of [his] innocence” (203). As Sutpen never looks more deeply into the circumstances of his original insult at the door of Pettibone’s Tidewater Virginia mansion, so he shows little interest in understanding the place where he set out to make his fortune. In going to sea, the 14-year-old Sutpen acted solely on his teacher’s assertion that the West Indies were where “poor men went in ships and became rich” (195). He knew nothing about where the West Indies were, how he would get there, or what he would do there—only that he would make money—“it didn’t matter how” (195). As a result, the paper attempts to contribute to this topic by focusing on an important phenomenon—that it could actually be Black women who are turning down non-Black men. The paper presents eight factors that may be causing Black women to turn down interracial romantic rela- tionship requests from non-Black men. She knows that conditions will be hard, but life in England was also hard. At least in the colony, there is the possibility of improvement. The Virginia Company has assured her and the other women that they will have their choice of marriage partners. They have promised that the men are wealthy, or at least will be wealthy with the women’s help. Moreover, in Virginia, as a married woman she has the right to share in her husband’s wealth. Catherine knows it is a risk, but she has been assured she can always return home if she changes her mind. Regardless, Catherine expects to stay. There is little for her back in England. She will marry a colonist and help found a nation. The first American mail order brides were independent, powerful and respected; they are never described as “mail order brides.” The term “mail order bride” is most often reserved for women perceived as victims.1 Colonial mail order brides, by contrast, have other names: “Jamestown brides,” “King’s daughters,” and “Casket girls.” Nonetheless, the label “mail order bride” is just as appropriate.
