Previous scholarship has focused heavily on Tĕhôm’s creation context to the exclusion of its ritual context. As a result, Tĕhôm has been unduly linked to the Mesopotamian Tiamat and interpreted as the embodiment of chaos and conflict. This research addresses the limitations of previous scholarship by examining all contexts of the Hebrew Bible’s Deep and comparing them with references in ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, and Canaanite (Ugaritic) texts. Comparative methodology combined with a history of religions approach places the concept of primeval Deep in its ancient Near Eastern context as a source of deified power; this concept transforms into a demonized place of judgment in biblical tradition. Beginning with the ANE context for Tĕhôm, ! ii each chapter analyzes occurrences of primeval Deep under the following categories—Deification (2), Personification (3), Subjugation (4), and Demonization (5)—to show Tĕhôm’s development from deity to deep (abyss). Tĕhôm appears as a source of power and blessing in early texts of the Hebrew Bible, and its personification distinctly deifies ancient Israel’s deity Yahweh rather than itself. Next, Tĕhôm’s personification as subjugated monster symbolically represents ancient Israel’s enemies and justifies Yahweh’s power to judge or deliver. The motif of a subjugated Deep legitimates a subjugator’s rule, justifies conquest, confers power to human representatives, and empowers ancient people to face their fears. Lastly, in subsequent text-communities of the DSS, LXX, and Targums, Tĕhôm becomes a demonized place of evil. Rabbinic literature expands traditions of Tĕhôm’s origins and end time purposes to reflect apocalyptic interpretations of Jewish eschatology. Tĕhôm’s fluidity as a concept allows it to grow and change according to the needs of its religious community. Despite its interpretive development, it remains a constant reminder and expression of ancient Israel’s relationship to Yahweh. Ultimately, Tĕhôm’s evolution from deity to deep reflects the creation of a distinct religious identity centered on Yahweh—the deity who transcends phenomena, situation, time, and place. iii The dissertation of Rosanna Ann Lu is approved. By examining the three texts, I intend to show the evolution of the demonization of Jews in literature throughout different periods in history. A particular trope present in two of the texts in the Christian aversion to usury- a task that was conveniently attributed to the Jews.

    Idolatry in the Ancient Near East1 Ancient Near Eastern Pantheons Ammonite Pantheon The chief god was Moloch/Molech/Milcom. Assyrian Pantheon The chief god was Asshur. Babylonian Pantheon At Lagash - Anu, the god of heaven and his wife Antu. At Eridu - Enlil, god of earth who was later succeeded by Marduk, and his wife Damkina. Marduk was their son. Other gods included: Sin, the moon god; Ningal, wife of Sin; Ishtar, the fertility goddess and her husband Tammuz; Allatu, goddess of the underworld ocean; Nabu, the patron of science/learning and Nusku, god of fire. Canaanite Pantheon The Canaanites borrowed heavily from the Assyrians. According to Ugaritic literature, the Canaanite pantheon was headed by El, the creator god, whose wife was Asherah. Their offspring were Baal, Anath (The OT indicates that Ashtoreth, a.k.a. Ishtar, was Baal’s wife), Mot & Ashtoreth. Dagon, Resheph, Shulman and Koshar were other gods of this pantheon. The cultic practices included animal sacrifices at high places; sacred groves, trees or carved wooden images of Asherah. Divination, snake worship and ritual prostitution were practiced. Sexual rites were supposed to ensure fertility of people, animals and lands. Edomite Pantheon The primary Edomite deity was Qos (a.k.a. Quas). Many Edomite personal names included Qos in the suffix much like YHWH is used in Hebrew names. Egyptian Pantheon2 Egyptian religion was never unified. Typically deities were prominent by locale. Only priests worshipped in the temples of the great gods and only when the gods were on parade did the populace get to worship them. These 'great gods' were treated like human kings by the priesthood: awakened in the morning with song; washed and dressed the image; served breakfast, lunch and dinner.

"A star" sometimes signifies one in a high position or even a supernatural being. “There shall come a star out of Jacob" (Num 24:17); Angels are called "stars" (Job. 38:7); in Isa 14:12 we have Satan referred to as “How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning!" The star that had fallen from the sky to the earth. It seems, therefore, that Satan himself is referred to by this symbol. The words he in verses 2 and king in verse 11, show that this is a person rather than a literal star. The star was given the key to the shaft of the Abyss. Satan or this demonic angel was given a key to the shaft of the Abyss or the bottomless pit. The Abyss or bottomless pit is a place in the depths of the earth where evil spirits were thought to be imprisoned (Luke 8:31). Satan then is pictured as opening the lid or the door (that can be closed or locked) to this Abyss, so that demons can be released to inflict men and women on the earth.

Although these verses are extremely important in supporting the premillen- nial doctrine, many other verses throughout the New Testament also offer support for premillennialism. Our study limits itself to five biblically doctrinal premillennial truths from the New Testament that seamlessly blend throughout the Bible with the person and work—and reign—of Jesus the Messiah on earth after His Second Com- ing. * * * * * Introduction Whenever discussions between premillennialists and amillennialists occur, Revelation 19 and 20 is usually the section of Scripture on which many base their argumentation, especially Revelation 20:1–10. First you need to know that there is a Hebrew Bible avoiding the use of our Creator's Name but put some kind of "holy" value on their substitution, replacing His Holy Name just as those have replace His Name, YHWH, with the term, LORD, so these Jews have replace His Name with this term -- HASHEM. What does HaSHEM mean, it means and is to say, THE NAME. I hope you can understand the following example. This is not speculation, that comes later in seen the IAM or YAM as another form of revelation concerning our Creator, and Savior. HaShem = The Name IAM = HaYaH = The YaH Knowing and understanding that our God and Savior has a personal Name and that the God of Israel also has a Personal Name we can look at the Hebrew Scriptures and the correct wording, without the Greek, and we come up with the Hebrew "ha" for the Greek "I" and the Hebrew YaH in place of the Greek for "AM".

Sinai-Horeb emphasize the presence of God in sounds (lwq) of thunder, accompanied by blasts of the Shofar, with fire and dark clouds (Exod 19:16-25; 20:18-21; Deut 4:11-12; 5:22-24). These dramatic, awe-inspiring theophanies re- veal divine power and holy danger associated with proximity to divine presence. In contrast, Elijah’s encounter with God on Mt. Horeb in 1 Kings 19:11-12, begins with a similar audible, vis- ual drama of strong, violent winds, an earthquake and fire—none of which manifest divine presence. Rather, it is hqd hmmd lwq, “a voice of thin silence” (v. 12) which manifests God, causing Elijah to hide his face in his cloak, lest he “see” divine presence (and presumably die).1 Revelation in external phenomena present a type of kataphatic experience, while revelation in silence presents a more apophatic, mystical experience.2 Traditional Jewish and Christian mystical traditions point to divine silence and darkness as the highest form of revelatory experience. This paper explores the contrasting theophanies experienced by Moses and the Israelites at Sinai and Elijah’s encounter in silence on Horeb, how they use symbolic imagery to convey transcendent spiritual realities, and speculate whether 1 Kings 19:11-12 represents a “higher” form of revela- tory encounter.     136 Journal of Biblical Literature The principal shortcoming of this book is that it does not adequately take into account the results of the current Israeli excavations at Shiloh. Schley dismisses "the claimed (emphasis mine) archaeological evidence for a massive destruction of the site during Iron I" without reviewing the evidence, and he takes refuge in the position that "Iron I extends from the end of the thirteenth century BCE to the middle of the tenth, and an Iron I destruction layer theoretically could occur at any time during this period" (p. 196). Unfortunately, the work is marred by numerous typographical errors and several inconsistencies in transliterations. Still, it is a valuable study which merits the careful attention of scholars. Sheffield: JSOT Press, 1989. Pp. 201. ?22.50 ($33.50). The first two chapters of Genesis raise innumerable problems for the student of biblical literature. Not the least of these are the basic meaning and etymology of five key words (tohu, bohu, teh6m, 'ed, 'eden), the relationship between these Hebrew concepts and proposed Near Eastern parallels, and the overall issue of earth and waters in the stories of creation. These questions form the basis of David Tsumura'smonograph. As the book's sub- heading suggests, the author is interested mainly in presenting the linguistic evidence relating to these issues. Only after a thorough investigation along these lines, he believes, can biblical scholars then proceed to the larger issues of theology and mythico-religious thought.

Bargh Other chapters in this book on the social psychology of good and evil address important questions such as: What are the psychologi- cal processes that lead to positive, selfless, prosocial, and constructive behavior on the one hand or to negative, selfish, antisocial, and destruc- tive behavior on the other? Such questions concern how the state of a per- son’s mind and his or her current context or situation influences his or her actions upon the outside world. In this chapter, however, the causal direc- tion is reversed. The focus is instead on how the outside world of human beings—with its religious, medical, cultural, philosophical, and scientific traditions, its millennia-old ideologies and historical forces—has placed a value on types of psychological processes. It is on how these historical forces, even today, slant the field of psychological science, through basi- cally a background frame or mind set of implicit assumptions, to consider types of psychological processes themselves as being either good or evil (or at least problematic and producing negative outcomes).
