Venticinco especies se conocen de tres o menos provincias españolas y muchas son nuevas para las faunas navarra y/o riojana. En las cuatro loca- lidades estudiadas las faunas consisten principalmente en elementos de amplia distribución geográfica, siendo muy minoritarios los endemismos y cuasiendemismos ibéricos, así como los elementos mediterráneo-occidentales. Al menos el 36% del conjunto de las especies estudiadas pueden considerarse saproxílicas. Es notable el hallazgo de Platydracus riojanus en la localidad pirenaica de Isaba, ya que no había vuelto a ser citada desde su descripción basada en material de Torrecilla en Cameros (La Rioja). Abstract A new contribution to the knowledge on rove-beetle fauna associated to northern Iberian Peninsula forests (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae) 151 species of rove-beetles from Pyrenean and pre-Pyrenean areas of the Roncal Valley (95 species in three loc- alities) and the northern Iberian Range (83 species in a single locality) are recorded. Twenty-five of those species are known from three or less Spanish provinces, and many are new for the faunas of La Rioja and Navarre. Since the publication in 1997 of Irish Coleoptera - a revised and annotated list by Anderson, Nash and O’Connor, there have been a large number of additions (59 species), confirmation of the presence of several species based on doubtful old records, a number of deletions and corrections, and significant nomenclatural and taxonomic changes to the list of Irish Staphylinidae.

    RELATIONSHIPS BETWEEN DEAD WOOD AND ARTHROPODS IN THE SOUTHEASTERN UNITED STATES by MICHAEL DARRAGH ULYSHEN (Under the Direction of James L. Hanula) ABSTRACT The importance of dead wood to maintaining forest diversity is now widely recognized. However, the habitat associations and sensitivities of many species associated with dead wood remain unknown, making it difficult to develop conservation plans for managed forests. The purpose of this research, conducted on the upper coastal plain of South Carolina, was to better understand the relationships between dead wood and arthropods in the southeastern United States. In a comparison of forest types, more beetle species emerged from logs collected in upland pine-dominated stands than in bottomland hardwood forests. This difference was most pronounced for Quercus nigra L., a species of tree uncommon in upland forests. In a comparison of wood postures, more beetle species emerged from logs than from snags, but a number of species appear to be dependent on snags including several canopy specialists. In a study of saproxylic beetle succession, species richness peaked within the first year of death and declined steadily thereafter. However, a number of species appear to be dependent on highly decayed logs, underscoring the importance of protecting wood at all stages of decay. In a study comparing litter-dwelling arthropod abundance at different distances from dead wood, arthropods were more abundant near dead wood than away from it. In another study, ground- dwelling arthropods and saproxylic beetles were little affected by large-scale manipulations of dead wood in upland pine-dominated forests, possibly due to the suitability of the forests surrounding the plots.

Original work is presentedon coleopteranfaunas, mainly from medieval pits, recovered and analysed from sites in Winchester, Southampton and Chichester. The faunas resemble those recovered from deposits of similar provenancefrom other sites. They also contain the earliest records of some species in Britain and the earliest medieval occurrencesof others which, were common in Roman Britain, but missing from the Saxonurban record. A modem analogue of a medieval cesspit was set up in order to investigate the coleopteranfaunas, which develop in that environment. Further experimental work was carried out using a choice chamber, to determine the preferred pabulum of certain speciesofAphodius dung beetles. The findings are placed in a wider context as a representative sample of all work, carried out on Roman and post-Roman coleopteran thanatocoenoses,were included in the following investigations. Methods of standardising data from different sourcesare discussed. The distribution of synanthropic species through time was studied, with special emphasis on Tipnus unicolor and Cryptolestesferrugineus.

Ant-like stone beetles (Coleoptera: Scydmaenidae) include more than 4,850 described species in about 90 genera main- tained as a separate cosmopolitan family since 1815. Recent authors have hypothesised that Scydmaenidae might be rooted deep inside rove-beetles (Staphylinidae). To test this hypothesis we analysed 206 parsimoniously informative larval and adult morpho- logical characters scored for 38 taxa. Strict consensus topologies from the shortest trees in all 12 analyses consistently placed Scyd- maenidae as sister to (Steninae + Euaesthetinae) in a monophyletic Staphylinine Group (with or without Oxyporinae). The single fully resolved and most consistently supported topology maintains a monophyletic Staphylinine Group consisting of Oxyporinae + (Megalopsidiinae + ((“Scydmaenidae” + (Steninae + Euaesthetinae)) + (Leptotyphlinae + (Pseudopsinae + (Paederinae + Staphylini- nae))))); Solierius lacks larval data and is ambiguously placed within the Group.
