Getting The Most Out Of Our High Holiday Prayer Experience

In a few weeks we will gather together to celebrate the Yamim Noraim , the Days Of Awe. Tefilah , or prayer, is one of the primary activities of these days. We gather together in prayer, for many hours at a time, in an attempt to forge a deeper connection with God, with our community, and with ourselves as we prepare for a fresh start during this season of renewal.

The challenge, of course, is that for many of us, prayer can be a real struggle. The Hebrew is difficult. We don't know what the prayers mean. The services are too long. The service seems like a show. We don't feel comfortable in our synagogue. We are embarrassed that we have two PhDs, but we don't know Hebrew. The English readings are boring. The prayers are said too fast. The prayers are too rote. We don't believe in God. We aren't sure what we believe about God. We aren't sure God is listening. We don't really know how to pray, how to express our gratitude, our worries, our doubts, fears, joys, and sorrows to a God that we are not sure is listening. The prayers are repetitive. And the list goes on. But allowing any one of these excuses to stop us from endeavoring to create a prayer life is simply too easy of a way out.

As Rabbi Mike Comins writes in his book "Making Prayer Real," Underneath its stated intentions of praising, thanksgiving, or beseeching God, underneath its functional goals of fulfilling our religious obligations, spurring us to action, bringing us comfort in times of stress, improving our character traits, or bonding with the historical or present Jewish community, prayer is first and foremost a spiritual practice that lays the foundation for attaining any of the above. In its essence, prayer is the practice of becoming more aware and more compassionate. It is a way of speaking truth and opening the heart (41).

In other words, prayer is essentially a discipline that helps us cultivate awareness -- of God, of ourselves and our feelings, of our family, our friends, and our fellow human beings. That is our task during these days together (and throughout the rest of the year).

Ok. So, how do we get there? Especially if we are not "practiced" in a regular prayer routine? True connection in prayer takes work. It takes patience, persistence, practice, commitment, and an open heart and mind. That is why complaining about the "length" of the services, particularly during the High Holy Days (the longest service of the year), sometimes misses the point. Services are long because one cannot rush spiritual connection. And aren't we always complaining that we never have "enough" time to just "be?" This year, instead of complaining about the length of services, let us challenge ourselves to use the time that we are always complaining we never have. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

1. As the old Nike commercial used to say: "Just Do It." Sometimes, you just have to dive into the prayer experience in order to get something out of it. Don't worry about the Hebrew, or comprehension, or whether you are sure about what you believe. Instead, let yourself connect to the experience going on around you and see if and how you are changed by it.

2. Try to remember that prayer is not only about what we "want," it is also about appreciating what we have. As you join us in prayer, ask yourself to list the top three things that you are grateful for today. Then ask yourself whether you have shown enough gratitude for that which you are thankful.

3. Don't let the Hebrew scare you. Read what you can, try to sing along, or just let yourself get lost in the sounds of the Hebrew chanting. Yes, Hebrew is challenging, but it is also an authentic way in which our people have prayed for thousands of years. As you hear the words, remember that these same words and prayers have been expressed throughout the world -- across generations and across time.

4. Be open to the experience. Remember that there is no one right way to pray. Remember that true prayer comes from the heart and God understands all languages. The words in the prayer book are powerful and beautiful -- but they should be felt like one feels poetry, or music, and not read like one reads a book. And although the liturgy is inspiring in its own right, our tradition also values personal prayer. Use the siddur as a jumping-off point, and not an end point. If you see a phrase or a sentence that is interesting to you, ask yourself what you think it means, and how your life might change if you took the meaning behind that verse or prayer seriously on a daily basis. Our tradition refers to prayer as the work of the heart (Babylonian Talmud, Taanit, 2a). When you are in synagogue, don't worry about the script of the prayer (that's my job). Instead, start with an open heart and an open mind -- and go from there.

5. Lastly, remember that prayer is not meant to be a spectator sport. Prayer is not a performance, but rather is something that requires our participation and involvement. As I often say, remember to sing if you know the words, and sing if you don't know the words!

Each day we proclaim in our siddur that Karov Adonai L'kol Kor'av , God is close to all who call out to God. As we start this New Year, may each of us have the courage, patience, and discipline to begin calling out to God in our lives. May we have the strength to dive into the deep, rich, and challenging world of prayer during these High Holy Days and throughout the rest of the year as well. And when we have questions, concerns, challenges, and struggles, may our synagogue be a place in which they can be expressed, explored, and worked through together. Because true prayer is not about changing God. It is about changing us.

Shanah Tovah U'metukah. I wish you and your families a good and sweet New Year.

A M ESSAGE F ROM O UR P RESIDENT , L ARRY S HAPIRO

Well, we are collectively two months into my presidency and I have some good things to report. First, we were able to enter into a contract with a reputable builder for the remaining portion of the heritage Beth El cemetery property which will cover all carrying costs, i.e. taxes and insurance, going forward until closing or contract termination. This is a substantial improvement from where we have been for the last four years given the prior purchaser’s breach of contract and history of broken promises. Moreover, this will allow us to stop worrying about funding such costs and most importantly focus our attention, energy, and efforts elsewhere. If you have any questions regarding the issues and history of what has come to be known as the “Neptune Estates” situation, do not hesitate to contact me.

Second, our move to a sustainable commitment model from a dues model is, so far, the success we had hoped and anticipated it would be. Allowing members to tell us what Congregation Torat El means to them and show that level of meaning and support in their financial commitment has been truly gratifying and inspiring. Thank you all for your present and continued support in this regard.

Third, we will be including all approved Executive Board and Board of Trustee minutes as attachments in the regular “Upcoming Events” emails you receive, as well as the agendas for upcoming Board meetings. We are working to post these items on our website as well. Generally, Board meetings are the first Tuesday of the month at 7:30pm, and a calendar of meetings is available on the website. Of course, feel free to call the office for dates things are happening. Any interested congregant is invited to attend a Board meeting to see what is going on in your Temple. Of course, some aspects of the meeting may be “closed” due to confidentiality regarding membership finances, personnel, or other confidential matters.

I encourage you to get involved, stay connected, and be in touch with what is happening in your community. L’Shanah Tovah, Larry

Congregation Torat El Heritage Circle Meet Harriet and Gary Wiser

From humble beginnings in Philadelphia, followed by a stint in the Army stationed at Fort Monmouth, and then making a home at a point in between, for Gary and Harriet Wiser, it’s always about family, particularly children. Harriet and Gary grew up three blocks away from each other in row houses in a self-proclaimed “Jewish Ghetto” in the Wynnefield section of Philadelphia. Both were raised in observant homes and confirmed in their teens. Short on cash, Gary commuted to Temple University for his undergraduate degree and Dental School. After they married, Gary spent two years in the Army. They were stationed at Fort Monmouth, grateful for its close proximity to their families in Philadelphia. Upon his discharge as a Captain, they returned to Philadelphia for Gary’s Orthodontics residency. They eventually settled in Freehold (which they had discovered on their weekend trips back to Philly along Route 33) and joined Agudath Achim, where Gary served as Men’s Club President, and Harriet served on numerous committees. They raised three children -- daughter Toby and her husband Hal live in Livingston; daughter Mindy and her husband David, as well as son David and his wife Suzanne are Congregation Torat El members. The Wisers moved to Ocean Township and joined Temple Beth Torah eight years ago, following Gary’s retirement from his Orthodontic practice. It didn’t take long for them to see a need they could fill. The Religious School their young grandchildren would attend was thriving. But they wanted to enhance the school with extra-curricular programs all the children would really enjoy. “We wanted the children to be excited to be here, to offer fun things,” says Harriet. That was the vision of The Wiser Endowment, which they established to enhance the Religious School experience for both the students and teachers. This permanent endowment subsidizes trips for the students (most notably the annual 7 th grade trip to New York City), supports programming such as matzah baking and shofar making, and provides funds for the professional development of the teachers. Both Mindy and Suzanne have chaperoned several of the New York City theater trips. “Seeing our gift help our own grandchildren and the rest of the community is very gratifying,” says Harriet. Harriet and Gary’s passion for Judaism and tradition of giving has been passed to the next generations. “Our children and six grandchildren are active in their synagogues and the greater Jewish community,” says Gary. Mindy currently serves on the CTE Board of Trustees, while David is a past Board member. And the Wisers’ giving didn’t stop there. They have made a generous commitment to the 2015-16 Congregation Torat El Sustaining Commitment Program. The Wisers have also passed on their love of Israel to their children. They themselves have been there 12 times, while each of their children’s families have traveled with Gary and Harriet, and on their own. “We get pleasure from everyone in our family being active,” they say. “We feel lucky to have involved our children so that they all feel connected to Judaism and Israel.”

Through the establishment of this endowment, the Wisers are inaugural members of the newly established Congregation Torat El Heritage Circle. The Heritage Circle recognizes donors during their lifetime who make a gift supporting the future of Congregation Torat El with a planned gift. If you have already included Congregation Torat El in your estate plans or would like more information on the Congregation Torat El Heritage Circle, call Pam Cardullo at the temple office at 732-531-4410.

MEN'S CLUB JERSEY SHORE BIRTHRIGHT CHARITY GOLF OUTING

On July 27th Congregation Torat El and Congregation B'nai Israel, Toms River joined forces for the "Charity Golf Outing" and had a very successful and very enjoyable day "on the links," followed by dinner at Jumping Brook Country Club golf course, with great prizes for the best players. Although the weather prediction made everyone a bit nervous, the day turned out to be a perfect one! Says former CBI Men's Club President, Hy Mittleberg, "the Ocean/Monmouth Men's Club connection that our two synagogues made and the camaraderie that we shared were really terrific," and so was the fund-raising generated by player fees, event sponsors and a silent auction. The project was so successful, in fact, that Torat El and B'nai Israel are planning to keep their new partnership going… and that plan definitely includes a charity golf outing next year!

MANY THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED TO MAKE THIS WONDERFUL EVENT HAPPEN!
