    THE ETHICS OF BEING A COMMENTATOR II Erwin Chemerinsky* and Laurie Levenson** I. INTRODUCTION Although it will be many years before all of the effects of the Simpson legal proceedings are understood, it already is clear that the media has learned from the case that there is enormous public interest in trial proceedings. This lesson hardly should be surprising, as the drama of the courtroom has been obvious since the trial of Socrates and has been the foundation for countless classic movies and television pro­ grams, from "Inherit the Wind" to "Perry Mason." Yet, the prosecution of O.J. Simpson1 for the murders of Ronald Goldman and Nicole Brown Simpson received far, far more media coverage than any case in American, and probably world, history. The media devoted enormous attention to the case for a single reason: people were interested in hearing about it. The result is that more legal proceedings will receive much more media attention than prior to the Simpson case. In the year since the Simpson verdict, there has been sub­ stantial coverage of the retrial of the Menendez brothers for the murder of their parents, the murder trial of rapper Snoop Doggy Dog, the trial for the murder of model Linda Sobek, the rape trial of Alex Kelly, the pretrial and trial proceedings involving the Oklahoma City bombing and the "Unabomber," and the Whitewater investigation. Also, of course, every de­ tail of the continuing saga of O.J.     ALL THE PRESIDENT'S CONSERVATIVES: RICHARD NIXON AND THE AMERICAN CONSERVATIVE MOVEMENT. David Sarias Rodriguez Department of History University of Sheffield Submitted for the degree of PhD October 2010 ABSTRACT This doctoral dissertation exammes the relationship between the American conservative movement and Richard Nixon between the late 1940s and the Watergate scandal, with a particular emphasis on the latter's presidency. It complements the sizeable bodies ofliterature about both Nixon himself and American conservatism, shedding new light on the former's role in the collapse of the post-1945 liberal consensus. This thesis emphasises the part played by Nixon in the slow march of American conservatism from the political margins in the immediate post-war years to the centre of national politics by the late 1960s. The American conservative movement is treated as a diverse epistemic community made up of six distinct sub-groupings - National Review conservatives, Southern conservatives, classical liberals, neoconservatives, American Enterprise Institute conservatives and the 'Young Turks' of the New Right - which, although philosophically and behaviourally autonomous, remained intimately associated under the overall leadership of the intellectuals who operated from the National Review. Although for nearly three decades Richard Nixon and American conservatives endured each other in a mutually frustrating and yet seemingly unbreakable relationship, Nixon never became a fully-fledged member of the movement. Yet, from the days of Alger Hiss to those of the' Silent Majority', he remained the political actor best able to articulate and manipulate the conservative canon into a populist, electorally successful message. During his presidency, the administration's behaviour played a crucial role - even if not always deliberately - in the momentous transformation of the conservative movement into a more diverse, better-organised, modernised and more efficient political force.

This evening marks the fifteenth John Field Simms Memorial Lecture. The fund for the lecture series was established by the generous gift of Albert Galatin Simms to the University of New Mexico School of Law in memory of his brother, John Field Simms who died in 1954. John Field Simms was an eminent trial lawyer, a distinguished public servant, a former Justice of the New Mexico Supreme Court and a member of the Board of Regents of the University of New Mexico. His son, Dr. Albert Simms, and his daughter, Anne Simms Clark, are here with us this evening.
