Charles Parish collected plants in Burma (now Myanmar) between 1852 and 1878. His orchid collections, both preserved and living plants, were extensive. He sent plant material and watercolour sketches to Sir William Hooker at Kew and living plants to the British orchid nursery of Messrs Hugh Low & Co. of Upper Clapton. H.G. Reichenbach obtained examples of the Parish plant material from Hugh Low and he visited Kew where he studied the Parish orchid specimens and illustrations and many of them were subsequently described by Reichenbach. His beautiful and accurate watercolour paintings of orchids were bound in two volumes and eventually came to Kew following his death. -

SHARING REPTON: HISTORIC LANDSCAPES FOR ALL Garden History Lucky Dip Curiosity Level prompt sheets The Garden History Lucky Dip is an activity to encourage informal interest in garden history. The Garden History Lucky Dip uses everyday objects to introduce a particular topic. The prompt sheets were developed to lead the conversation about the topic, stimulating discussion within a small group of participants. The sheets provide short stories about garden history to generate interest and inspire further involvement. The Garden History Lucky Dip activity is intended to be an interactive workshop, and is suitable to do within an hour, easily conducted over a lunch break or long tea break at an event, AGM, or other meeting. The prompt sheets are aimed at three different levels of interest and knowledge in garden history. Curiosity Level is aimed at those who have some knowledge of garden history and are curious to know more. They have been extensively used by botanists such as Robert Rolfe, Victor Summerhayes, Gunnar Seidenfaden and Jeffery Wood when working on the orchid floras of the region. Parish’s life, collecting activities and collections are discussed here. The name Parish as a collector of orchids in No record has yet been found, but it is most likely Burma (Myanmar) will be familiar to those who that Charles Parish returned to England for his formal study orchids but it is unlikely that many people education in 1832 or thereabouts, aged ten. In 1869 Mr. Folkard resigned the service of the Public Works Departmentand practically retired from the profession. About four years later be returnedto England and took up his residence in London, writing occasionally for the technical press and re- maining a constant correspondent of the Ceylon Observer. In 1873 he designed an improved apparatus for loweringand raising, engagingand disengaging ships’ boats, whichhe described to theUnited Service Institutionin the following year.’Mr. Folkard died at his residence, 2 Portman Nansions, Baker Street, on the 26th December, 1896, from pneumonia. He was elected an Associate on the 2nd Nay, 1865, and was transferred to the class of Xember on the 7th December, 1869. JAXES HENRYGREATHEAD was born at Grahamstown, Cape Colony, on the 6th August, 1844. His death has cut short a career to which the future seemed to have assured great success and high professional distinction. His early years were spent in his native place, which he left to come to England in 1859 for the completion of his education, and in 1861 began a three-years’ pupilage to the late Nr. -
Dale Metz Smith 1928-2011
Volume 38 Number 5 Nov.-Dec. 2011 Editors: Joan Nester-Hudson and David Schwartz Dale Metz Smith 1928-2011 he American Fern Society lost a longtime Tmember this year when Dale Smith passed away on 25 January 2011. Dr. Dale Metz Smith was born on 23 December 1928 in Portland, Indiana, where he grew up and attended high school. He attended college at Indiana University and received his B.S. degree in 1950. That year, he also married the former Ruth Geraldine Wyne of Deputy, Indiana. Dale then earned his M.S. degree from Purdue University in 1952 and his doctorate from Indiana University in 1957. His dissertation was on a group of sunflowers, but he also had a long-standing interest in ferns and joined the AFS in 1958. Dale taught botany at several universities before settling into his final tenure track at the University of California-Santa Barbara. There he rose to the rank of professor and also served as chairman of the Biology Department. He was a well-known teacher of biology. His most-cited research centered on the flavonoid chemistry and systematics of various plant groups, including what was then known as the Pityrogramma triangularis complex (the silverback ferns, now segregated into the genus Pentagramma) and the Appalachian Asplenium complex. After a period as professor emeritus, Dale and his wife returned to the small town of Deputy, in southeastern Indiana.
