Its main aim is to be a space for information sharing about activities and projects concerning rural history and other disciplinary approaches to rural studies. While its geographical scope deliberately transcends Portugal and Europe, Rural RePort was made a section of the Portuguese Rural Studies Society (SPER) and is the Portuguese member of EURHO (European Rural History Organisation). https://histruralpt.wordpress.com SEHA (Sociedad Española de Historia Rural) is a non-profit scientific and cultural association. It aims to foster research, opinion sharing, teaching and dissemination of scientific knowledge pertaining to agrarian history and rural society and economy, from an interdisciplinary perspective, and to the benefit of all concerned with the subject. While its main intervention scope is the Spanish territory, SEHA also fosters the cooperation with associations and institutions in other countries, and it is the Spanish member of EURHO. Its journal Historia Agraria ranks among the most important European academic journals in the field. http://seha.info, http://historiaagraria.com ISCTE-IUL (University Institute of Lisbon) is a public university established in 1972. Pursuing teaching, research and community service activities, with approximately 8500 students enrolled in undergraduate (52%) and postgraduate (48%) programs, 450 teachers and 220 non-teaching staff, it plays a major role in educating qualified specialists and personnel. Signature ………………………………… UNIVERSITY OF SUSSEX Adam Fishwick, DPhil in International Relations INDUSTRIALISATION AND THE WORKING CLASS: THE CONTESTED TRAJECTORIES OF ISI IN CHILE AND ARGENTINA SUMMARY Research on import-substitution industrialisation (ISI) in Latin America continues to portray it as an aberration of state-led development inevitably condemned to failure and held up as an example of the mistakes scholars and policymakers must avoid. In this thesis, however, I show that this misunderstanding of a “model” that lasted several decades and brought gains to a wide array of socioeconomic actors is due to an inability of leading approaches – those that focus on institutions, ideas, and class – to understand the role of labour.

    A Dialectic of Talking Forests: Trotskyist Ecology Through Afghan Sufi Cosmology Bilal Zenab Ahmed (SOAS, University of London (PhD)) This paper argues that a Trotskyist understanding of dialectics is well-suited to be combined with a few different intellectual mechanisms present in Pashto literature, oral storytelling, and Naqshbandi Sufi cosmology, to pursue a properly Marxist understanding of ecology and climate change. Such a model of understanding is highly appropriate to the local context of Northwest Pakistan and Southern Afghanistan, and can also potentially inspire new forms of dialectical understanding, elsewhere.I focus on the Afghan poet and refugee Pir Muhammad Karwan, who wrote a collection of work about the Soviet-Afghan War while living in Pakistani refugee camps during Taliban rule in the 1990s. Karwans poetry can be roughly classified as neoplatonist, due to its reliance on local Sufi concepts like maanavi and the imaginal plane. Perso-Arabic Sufi cosmology enables Karwan to work through an intellectual matrix that both abolishes and retools concepts like the self and other, technology and organic beings, human and nonhuman species, living and nonliving objects, embodied and cognitive knowledge, and sentient and non sentient natural processes. This is clear from works like The Chinar Tree Speaks, which discusses the Soviet-Afghan war from the perspective of human and tree, and The Talking Forest, which goes further to describe a forest not just in terms of its material content, but as a network of physical and emotional processes that feels, thinks, and speaks in its own spoken and embodied language.While Karwan is explicitly discussing the Soviet-Afghan War, its possible to use his perspective as a springboard for discussing the various impacts and processes involved in climate change.
