Unlike anything I've read before but at the same time, completely relatable. Great art, good characters, it's just fun. Left me wanting more. Mr. Luce is going to be a big name in comics very soon. One small thing. The description says there are pages "in color". Well, there are some pages with color on some objects that add accent to the story, like pink in one story, red in another. But those pages are not in full color. It's more like some pages WITH color instead of pages IN color. That's the description's fault, not the book's.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. I love off beat comicsBy ZendoraI love off beat comics. This one had me snickering at the '90's references and quirky off beat humor. At core is a romance with a large "slice of life" thrown on top. I hope there is another Oaf book in the future.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Ed Luce is a god among men. His artistic ...By Steve-oEd Luce is a god among men. There are metal-heads, cat lovers, and bears (oh my!) in Lucersquo;s sequel to his successful graphic novel debut. Oaf, a wuvable Bay Area , searches for love in the local metal and wrestling scenes in Blood and Metal, which collects a number of short stories. Featuring tales of Oaf rsquo;s formative childhood years, and much more! Full-color illustrations throughout ldquo; There are so many tantalizing details to tickle readers' fancies, from the chest-hairy end papers to all the visual in-jokes tucked into these panelshellip; With such a wide range of characters, itrsquo;s no wonder that Lucersquo;s stories have also found a diverse readership that includes rock lsquo;nrsquo; roll dudes, women, and kitty lovers. ... Share it with friends and gift yourself: this graphic novel is the best treat anyone can get, short of a basket of kittens!rdquo; - Cathy Camper, Lambda Literaryldquo; But while Lucersquo;s aesthetic and storytelling impress, itrsquo;snbsp;Wuvable Oafrsquo;s story thatrsquo;s endearing. ... The ups and downs and humorous pratfalls that plague Oaf are all things that anyone?regardless of gender or orientation?who has been in a romantic relationship can empathize with. Luce goes small so that his book can go big. The awkwardness, the tenderness, the eroticism, it all comes from a truthful place, a recognizable place, and itrsquo;s what makes the series both as funny as it is and as touching.rdquo; - Shea Hennum, Pasteldquo;Few comics have titles as accurate as Ed Lucersquo;snbsp;Wuvable Oaf. ... Collecting a project like this is Fantagraphicsrsquo; bread and butter, andnbsp;Wuvable Oafnbsp;is definitely a book yoursquo;ll want to eat up.rdquo; - Steve Foxe, Pasteldquo; Now collected into a very funny booknbsp;by , the tentative-yet-sexy romance between gigantic Oaf and tiny Eiffel will be catnip to bear-lovers and the bears who love them?but also to readersnbsp;notnbsp;steeped in the queer scene who simply love a witty, warm- hearted story and a lead character whorsquo;s worth rooting for.rdquo; - Dan Kois, Slateldquo;Like that ofnbsp;Tales of the City, the queer ofnbsp;Wuvable Oafnbsp;is a community you wish existed, full of the kind of people you wish you knew. ... Though Lucersquo;s cleanly designed illustrations appear almost entirely in black and white here, they exude a welcoming warmth, thanks in part to the bookrsquo;s contagious love for its cast of characters. ... A person who is not delighted bynbsp;Wuvable Oafnbsp;is probably not a person.rdquo; - Jacob Brogan, Slateldquo;...[T]he delightfulnbsp;Wuvable Oaf [is] a heartwarming, hilarious, occasionally raunchy exploration of San Francisco gay life and the cityrsquo;s queer underground music scene. ... With a juvenile, slightly oblivious lead, heightened ex-related drama, and strong ties to an urban music scene, nbsp;Wuvablenbsp;Oafnbsp;is like a gayer, hairier, filthier take on Bryan Lee Orsquo;Malleyrsquo;snbsp;Scott Pilgrimnbsp;graphic novels...rdquo; - Oliver Sava, The A.V. Clubldquo;Luce's writing is as endearing as his protagonist, sweet and humble, well-intentioned and genuine. ... As a protagonist, Oaf comprises the perfect portions of sweetness, shyness, and nervousness to endear and make him relatable to any and all readers who have ever had a crush or fallen in love. ... Gay or straight, there's much to wuv aboutnbsp;Wuvable Oaf.rdquo; - Zach Hollwedel, Under the Radarldquo; The book is formally inventive and heartfelt, reading like a mid-century romance comic steeped in the lewd sexual fantasies of classic underground comix. But the most admirable aspect is the indelible characterization of Oaf himself, a bear yoursquo;ll never forget.rdquo; - Abraham Riesman, Vultureldquo; This story of a burly ex-wrestler/kitten fancier has been one of my absolute favorite comics ? an affectingly offbeat gay rom-com that captures the universal sadness and silliness of loneliness and love, and mixes heartbreak and humor in exactly the right proportions.rdquo; - Patrick Reed, ComicsAllianceldquo;Wuvable Oaf is one of the cutest, most charming underground comics you can read. It also contains many man-nipples. ... All these tiny stories quickly reveal a rich, charming gallery of characters.rdquo; - Oystein Runde, Empirixldquo;Wuvable Oafnbsp;is a very silly comic and Lucersquo;s characters are simply drawn but incredibly expressive. Luce lays strange on strange on absurd... until it begins to seem unsustainably zany. But listen, itrsquo;s f***ing funny and at times unbearably cute.nbsp; ... But even more than the cute, itrsquo;s the substance ofnbsp;Wuvable Oafnbsp;that makes it so special. ... Itrsquo;s delightful and Irsquo;m disappointed in those of you who havenrsquo;t read it yet.rdquo; - Megan Purdy, Loser Cityldquo; It's a great comic. It's well drawn, and the dialogue and story are grounded, believable and really damn funny... What it most reminds me of, in a skewed kind of way, is Parks and Recreation. That show was, at its heart, about nice people being nice to each other, and there's that same kind of hopeful sweetness here.rdquo; - Jim Dandeneau, Topless Robotldquo;...[A] wildly entertaining comic.rdquo; - Cameron Hatheway, Bleeding Coolldquo; This comic has it all ndash; adorable kitties, a black metal/queercore/progressive disco grindcore band, and a search for true romance that is sure to make you laugh, cry, and help you celebrate your inner eccentricities.rdquo; - Sam Marx, ComicosityAbout the AuthorEd Luce (pronounced ldquo;loose, rdquo; like the opposite of tight) has made a huge splash in the comics scene with his self-published comic book series.
