Originally funded by a grant from Prism Comicsthe series was self-published in five volumes. Wuvable Oaf loosely depicts men who could be characterized as part of the gay " bear " subculture in that they are queer and of a large, hirsute body type. Luce has never denied this group is the primary Wuvable Oaf for his creations but has noted in several interviews that the words "bear", "gay" and "queer" have never appeared in the comic itself. He states "It's pretty obvious to anyone who Wuvable Oaf cracked the book what's going on" and that labels only serve to alienate a potentially larger audience, who might enjoy reading an otherwise completely queer narrative. Wuvable Oaf this reason, the comic has also been referred to as "post-bear" and even "post-gay" for its lack of dependence on identity based rhetoric. As a result, Wuvable Oaf has gained something of a crossover audience, being one of few queer indie comics to Wuvable Oaf press outside the gay community. In reality, the recordings can be attributed to members of legendary Bay Area hardcore band Limp Wristas Wuvable Oaf as members of Talk is Poison. Past songs have included "Fearce" and "Sleep Apnea"which feature a loud, abrasive thrashcore sound, along with spare keyboard lines and samples. Luce has stated that he considers his comics to be more like "art projects", which extend beyond the confines of the two-dimensional Wuvable Oaf. He won the award for Blood and Metal. There are some stand-alone strips in here, as well as a long story that makes up the bulk of the book. Oaf meets Wuvable Oaf singer from a band and the story follows his relationship with him, as well as Oaf's past, his hobbies, his love-life. The stand-alone stories are even wilder and more peculiar, with stories of internal organ staining, cat-apocalyptic-fighting and more. We love marginal scraps of paper that become important artifacts of historical import decades later. In this catalog of flyers, we celebrate phenomenal throwaway pieces of paper in music, art, poetry, film, and activism. Readers will find rare flyers for underground films by Kenneth Anger, Jack Smith, and Andy Warhol; incredible early hip-hop flyers designed by Buddy Esquire and others; and punk artifacts of Crass, the Sex Pistols, the Clash, and the underground Austin scene. Also included are scarce protest flyers and examples of mutual aid in the 20th Century, such as a flyer from Angela Davis speaking in Harlem only months after being found not guilty for the kidnapping and murder of a judge, and a remarkably illustrated flyer from a free nursery in the Lower East Side. For over a decade, Boo-Hooray has been committed to the organization, stabilization, and preservation of cultural narratives through archival placement. Queensland Conservatorium Research Centre, Griffith University Abstract For both the heterosexual and queer subject, subcultural participation and stylistic modes of cul- tural production and consumption, including popular music, are critical mechanisms aiding in the construction and expression of identity. Yet, in spite of abundant empirical examples of queer music cultures, subcultural studies scholars have paid minimal attention to queer sexualities and their concomitant stylistic modalities. In this article, I claim the importance of queer subterranean music cultures by synthesising significant literatures from various fields of inquiry including cul- tural sociology, popular musicology and queer studies. To begin, I will briefly clarify to whom and about what queer (theory) speaks. I then go on to offer an overview of subcultural and popu- lar music research paying particular attention to the subaltern queer subject and surveying queer criticism within each field.

As an illustration, I will focus on one slur in particular: dyke, which is generally consid- ered to be a derogatory term for lesbians. I argue that current research on these terms is limited in (at least) two ways: firstly, I argue not enough attention has been paid to the use of dyke by members of the target group, who can often use it in an non-insulting manner; secondly, I argue not enough attention has been paid to the use of the \neutral" form, lesbian, which is generally treated as having a simple, clear meaning, such as \engage[s] in same-sex sex" (Jeshion, 2013a, 312).

  • Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film
i Riot Dyke: Music, Identity, and Community in Lesbian Film by Alana Kornelsen A thesis submitted to the Faculty of Graduate and Postdoctoral Affairs in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in Music and Culture Carleton University Ottawa, ON © 2016 Alana Kornelsen ii Abstract This thesis examines the use of diegetic pre-composed music in three American lesbian feature films. Numerous trends can be noted in the selection of music in lesbian film broadly— music is often selected to draw on insider knowledge of the target audience of these films, creating cachet. This cachet comes with accompanying “affiliating identifications” (Kassabian 2001) that allow music to be used in the films’ construction of characters’ identities. This is evident in the treatment of music in many lesbian films: characters frequently listen to, discuss, and perform music. This thesis focuses specifically on riot grrrl music and the closely linked genre of queercore (which together Halberstam ([2003] 2008) refers to as “riot dyke”) in three films that focus on the lives of young women: The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (dir. Maria Maggenti, 1995), All Over Me (dir. Alex Sichel, 1997), and Itty Bitty Titty Committee (dir. Jamie Babbit, 2007). By examining how diegetic riot dyke music is used in these three films to build characters’ identities and contribute to the films’ narratives I argue that in these films, riot dyke music is presented as being central to certain queer identities and communities, and that this music (as well as the community that often accompanies it) is portrayed as instigating or providing opportunities for characters’ personal growth and affirming characters’ identities in adverse environments.

Following McConnell-Ginet (2002), I argue that the semantics of lesbian is actually quite com- plex, and that taking into account all the uses of both dyke and lesbian requires a new semantics and pragmatics for both terms. More specifically, I propose that dyke and lesbian are associated with different sets of personae: abstract identities or stereotypes. Dyke is associated with an anti-mainstream persona, which the vast ma- jority of speakers views negatively; whereas, lesbian is associated with a mainstream persona, which many speakers view favourably. I propose that the semantic puzzles associated with dyke and lesbian can be resolved through the combination of a the- ory of these personae and a theory of how listeners' beliefs about their interlocutors' ideologies affect utterance interpretation.
