Prather Ohio historically hosted a patchwork of tallgrass prairies, which provided habitat for native species and prevented erosion. As these vulnerable habitats have declined in the last 200 years due to increased human land use, restorations of these ecosystems have increased, and it is important to evaluate their success. The Hemiptera (true bugs) are an abundant and varied order of insects including leafhoppers, aphids, cicadas, stink bugs, and more. They play important roles in grassland ecosystems, feeding on plant sap and providing prey to predators. Hemipteran abundance and composition can respond to grassland restorations, age of restoration, and size and isolation of habitat. -

1.A. Detailed description of the research area and research plan Context of the proposal Biological invasions (bioinvasions) are defined as the successful establishment and spread of species outside their native range. They act as a major driver of global changes in species distribution. Diverse organisms and ecosystems may be involved, and although not all invasions have a negative impact, the ecological consequences often include the loss of native biological diversity and changes in community structure and ecosystem activity. There may also be additional negative effects on agriculture, forests, fisheries, and human health. National governments, intergovernmental structures like the European Commission and international organizations such as EPPO, CABI and IUCN have therefore mobilized to (i) introduce international laws on invasive species, (ii) organize international networks of scientists and stakeholders to study bioinvasions, and (iii) formalize the cooperation between national environmental or agricultural protection agencies (e.g. the French Agence Nationale de Sécurité Sanitaire, ANSES). Several billion euros are spent annually to address the problems caused by bioinvasions and the scientific community has focused on predicting and controlling future invasions by understanding how they occur. A peer-reviewed journal entitled "Biological Invasions” has been published since 1999. Ecologists have long drawn attention to the negative ecological effects of invasive species, whereas the evolutionary aspects of bioinvasions have received comparatively little attention. This reflects the fact that: i) invasive populations were thought to experience significant bottlenecks during their introduction to new environments and thus possess a limited potential to evolve; and ii) evolution was considered too slow to play a significant role given the relatively short timescale of the invasion process. -

The species represents the first definitive Mesozoic record for the Coreoidea. A cladistic analysis of Coreoidea, including the new family, is undertaken. INTRODUCTION The Pentatomomorpha with its 14 000 known living species (WEIRAUCH & SCHUH 2011) is the second largest of the seven heteropteran infraorders (SCHAEFER 1993, ŠTYS & KERZHNER 1975) (Enicocephalomorpha, Dipsocoromorpha, Gerromorpha, Nepomorpha, Leptodomorpha, Cimicomorpha, and Pentatomorpha). Most authors recognize five superfamilies within Pentatomomorpha, but there remains controversy regarding the 628 Polish Journal of Entomology 80 (4) composition of these superfamilies (SCHAEFER 1993, ŠTYS 1961). -

HOSHAW\ & MARIA SCHEFTER Abstract-Freshwater habitats of Yap, Federated States of Micronesia, are described, including first algal records. Periphyton and other visible algae were collected chiefly from streams and ponds. Streams were well shaded and lacked algae except in clearings; dominant algae were Schizothrix calcicola and Microcoleus spp. (Cyanophyta) and Cladophora sp. (Chlorophyta). Open ponds were dominated by blue-green algal mats, but some also had abundant Nitella and desmids. Desmids and diatoms were numerous and will be treated in other papers. The species list is short: 12 blue-green algae, 2 red algae, 2 charophytes, 7 filamentous greens, and 5 flagellates. All are new records for Yap and many for Micronesia. No endemic species were found . The freshwater algal flora of the Yap Islands does not show characteristics of the biota of "oceanic" islands. Introduction While there has been considerable study of marine algae in Micronesia (Tsuda & Wray 1977, Tsuda 1978, 1981), freshwater algae have been all but ignored throughout Micronesia, Melanesia, and Polynesia. However, studies of island freshwater algae could contribute to understanding of both tropical limnology and island biology. The distinctiveness of tropical limnology has recently been emphasized by Lewis (1987), who showed that limnological principles derived from studies of temperate lakes cannot be intuitively extrapolated to tropical lakes . The same is also true for transfer of knowledge of streams and ponds. -

Free-living insect herbivores foraging on 10 000 tagged seedlings representing ®ve species of common rainforest trees were surveyed monthly for more than 1 year in an unlogged forest plot of 1 km2 in Guyana. 2. Overall, 9056 insect specimens were collected. Most were sap-sucking insects, which represented at least 244 species belonging to 25 families. Leaf-chewing insects included at least 101 species belonging to 16 families. Herbivore densities were among the lowest densities reported in tropical rainforests to date: 2.4 individuals per square metre of foliage. 3. Insect host speci®city was assessed by calculating Lloyd's index of patchiness from distributional records and considering feeding records in captivity and in situ. Generalists represented 84 and 78% of sap-sucking species and individuals, and 75 and 42% of leaf-chewing species and individuals. In particular, several species of polyphagous xylem-feeding Cicadellinae were strikingly abundant on all hosts. 4. The high incidence of generalist insects suggests that the Janzen±Connell model, explaining rates of attack on seedlings as a density-dependent process resulting from contagion of specialist insects from parent trees, is unlikely to be valid in this study system. 5. Given the rarity of ¯ushing events for the seedlings during the study period, the low insect densities, and the high proportion of generalists, the data also suggest that seedlings may represent a poor resource for free-living insect herbivores in rainforests. -
The Jumping Plant-Lice (Hemiptera: Psylloidea) of the Maltese Islands

Twenty-one species of jumping plant-lice accommodated in five different families are here recorded from the Maltese Islands in an annotated checklist. The Aphalaridae is represented by four species (Agonoscena targionii (Lichtenstein), Blastopsylla occidentalis Taylor, Colposcenia aliena (Löw) and Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore), of which two (B. occidentalis and G. brimblecombei) are alien species originating from Australia. The Homotomidae is represented by Homotoma ficus (Linnaeus) and Macrohomotoma gladiata Kuwayama, the latter being an alien species originating from the Far East. The Liviidae is represented by Euphyllura olivina (Costa), Diaphorina lycii Loginova and Psyllopsis fraxinicola (Foerster). The Psyllidae is represented by Acizzia uncatoides (Ferris & Klyver), Cacopsylla myrthi (Puton) and C. pyri (Linnaeus), of which Acizzia uncatoides is an alien species originating from Australia. Finally, the most species-rich family is the Triozidae, represented by nine species (Bactericera albiventris (Foerster), B. crithmi (Löw), B. trigonica Hodkinson, Heterotrioza chenopodii (Reuter), Lauritrioza alacris (Flor), Trioza centranthi (Vallot), T. galii Foerster, T. kiefferi Giard and T. urticae (Linnaeus)). For each of the above species, collection data, distribution, host- plant data and other relevant information is provided. Lycium intricatum Boiss. is a new host-plant record for Diaphorina lycii, and Rhamnus lycioides subsp. oleoides (L.) Jahand. & Maire is a new host-plant record for Cacopsylla myrthi. A host- plant shift is documented for Bactericera crithmi, which alternates between Ferula melitensis Brullo et al. in winter and Crithmum maritimum L. -

Dragan Tsankov, 1164 Sofia, Bulgaria; mstoyneva@uni-sofia.bg * Correspondence: buzunov@uni-sofia.bg Abstract: The review summarizes the available knowledge on toxins and their producers from rather disparate algal assemblages of aeroterrestrial, airborne and other versatile extreme environments (hot springs, deserts, ice, snow, caves, etc.) and on phycotoxins as contaminants of emergent concern in soil and plants. There is a growing body of evidence that algal toxins and their producers occur in all general types of extreme habitats, and cyanobacteria/cyanoprokaryotes dominate in most of them. Altogether, 55 toxigenic algal genera (47 cyanoprokaryotes) were enlisted, and our analysis showed that besides the “standard” toxins, routinely known from different waterbodies (microcystins, nodularins, anatoxins, saxitoxins, cylindrospermopsins, BMAA, etc.), they can produce some specific toxic compounds. Whether the toxic biomolecules are related with the harsh conditions on which algae have to thrive and what is their functional role may be answered by future studies.
