Amen. 4 A BRIEF HISTORY OF MADRAS CHRISTIAN COLLEGE Madras Christian College traces its origin to the General Assembly School founded by the Rev. John Anderson, a Missionary from the Church of Scotland on 3rd April 1837. Anderson was a pioneer in introducing English medium education in South India. He was ably assisted by Rev. Johnston, Rev. Braidwood and Margaret Locher Anderson. Rev. William Miller who arrived in 1862 upgraded the school to a college by adding F.A. and B.A., courses in 1865 and 1867. -

Volatilomes of Milky Mushroom (Calocybe Indica P&C) Estimated
International Journal of Chemical Studies 2017; 5(3): 387-391 P-ISSN: 2349–8528 E-ISSN: 2321–4902 IJCS 2017; 5(3): 387-381 Volatilomes of milky mushroom (Calocybe indica © 2017 JEZS Received: 15-03-2017 P&C) estimated through GCMS/MS Accepted: 16-04-2017 Priyadharshini Bhupathi Priyadharshini Bhupathi and Krishnamoorthy Akkanna Subbiah PhD Scholar, Department of Plant Pathology, Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Abstract Coimbatore, India The volatilomes of both fresh and dried samples of milky mushroom (Calocybe indica P&C var. APK2) were characterized with GCMS/MS. The gas chromatogram was performed with the ethanolic extract of Krishnamoorthy Akkanna the samples. The results revealed the presence of increased levels of 1, 4:3, 6-Dianhydro-α-d- Subbiah glucopyranose (57.77%) in the fresh and oleic acid (56.58%) in the dried fruiting bodies. The other Professor and Head, Department important fatty acid components identified both in fresh and dried milky mushroom samples were of Plant Pathology, Tamil Nadu octadecenoic acid and hexadecanoic acid, which are known for their specific fatty or cucumber like Agricultural University, aroma and flavour. The aroma quality of dried samples differed from that of fresh ones with increased Coimbatore, India levels of n- hexadecenoic acid (peak area - 8.46 %) compared to 0.38% in fresh samples. In addition, α- D-Glucopyranose (18.91%) and ergosterol (5.5%) have been identified in fresh and dried samples respectively. The presence of increased levels of ergosterol indicates the availability of antioxidants and anticancer biomolecules in milky mushroom, which needs further exploration. The presence of α-D- Glucopyranose (trehalose) components reveals the chemo attractive nature of the biopolymers of milky mushroom, which can be utilized to enhance the bioavailability of pharmaceutical or nutraceutical preparations. -

E-mail: [email protected] How to Cite Abstract Naveenkumar, J. and A quantitative inventory was conducted in two distinctive tropical deciduous forests at Sundarapandian, SM. Suruli falls forest of southern Western Ghats. Two one-hectare plots were established (2018). Assessment of tree and all trees >10cm DBH measured. Species richness, density, family importance value diversity in distinctive de- (FIV) and importance value index (IVI) were calculated and the results varied among the ciduous forests of Suruli two sites. A total of 777 stems and 52 species were documented in both the sites and falls, Southern Western moist deciduous forest (MDF) had maximum number species richness and density than Ghats. Journal of Applied dry deciduous forest (DDF). The basal area was higher in MDF (502 stems/ha and 16.52 and Natural Science, 10 m2/ha) than in DDF (275 stems/ha and 7.23 m2/ha). However, Shannon and evenness (4): 1085 -1093 indices showed a negative trend (DDF- 2.62, 0.41 and MDF- 2.37, 0.27). Diameter class- wise distribution of trees showed reverse ‘J shaped’ curve in both the forest types. -

AEGAEUM JOURNAL ISSN NO: 0776-3808 SELF RESPECT MOVEMENT UNDER PERIYAR M. Nala Assistant Professor of History Sri Sarada College for Women (Autonomous), Salem- 16 Self Respect Movement represented the Dravidian reaction against the Aryan domination in the Southern Society. It also armed at liberating the society from the evils of religious, customs and caste system. They tried to give equal status to the downtrodden and give the social dignity, Self Respect Movement was directed by the Dravidian communities against the Brahmanas. The movement wanted a new cultural society more based on reason rather than tradition. It aimed at giving respect to the instead of to a Brahmin. By the 19th Century Tamil renaissance gained strength because of the new interest in the study of the classical culture. The European scholars like Caldwell Beschi and Pope took a leading part in promoting this trend. C.V. Meenakshi Sundaram and Swaminatha Iyer through their wirtings and discourse contributed to the ancient glory of the Tamil. The resourceful poem of Bharathidasan, a disciple of Subramania Bharati noted for their style, beauty and force. C.N. Annadurai popularized a prose style noted for its symphony. These scholars did much revolutionise the thinking of the people and liberate Tamil language from brahminical influence. Thus they tried resist alien influence especially Aryan Sanskrit and to create a new order. The chief grievance of the Dravidian communities was their failure to obtain a fair share in the administration. Among then only the caste Hindus received education in the schools and colleges, founded by the British and the Christian missionaries many became servants of the Government, of these many were Brahmins. -

However, comparison of the type species of these genera and their polyphasic analyses enable the separation of both generic entities. Definitions of their diacritical characters follow from the combination of their phylogenetic and morphological criteria. The concepts of Anabaena sensu stricto (particularly without planktic types with gas vesicles in cells – Dolichospermum) and Wollea, derived from their types are proposed in the article and their review is presented in the table. A new species from saltworks in southern Thailand, W. salina, is described. The colony-forming Nostoc verrucosum (“Ashitsuki”) and Nostoc commune (“Ishikurage”), as well as Anabaena species (Nostocales), contained homospermidine. The thermo-halotolerant Spirulina subsalsa var. salina (Spirulinales), as well as freshwater Spirulina strains, contained spermidine. Putrescine, spermidine, and homospermidine were found in freshwater colony-forming Aphanothece sacrum (“Suizenji-nori”), whereas the halotolerant Aphanothece halophytica and Microcystis species (Chroococcales) contained spermidine alone. In addition to putrescine, spermidine, homospermidine and agmatine, thermospermine was found as a major polyamine in haloalkaliphilic Arthrospira platensis (“Spirulina”) (Oscillatoriales). Biodiversity and distribution of cyanobacteria at Dronning Maud Land, East Antarctica.The current study describes the biodiversity and distribution of cyanobacteria from the natural habitats of Schirmacher land, East Antarctica surveyed during 23rd Indian Antarctic Expedition (2003–2004). Cyanobacteria were mapped using the Global Positioning System (GPS). A total of 109 species (91 species were non-heterocystous and 18 species were heterocystous) from 30 genera and 9 families were recorded; 67, 86 and 14 species of cyanobacteria were identified at altitudes of sea level >100 m, 101–150 m and 398–461 m, respectively. The relative frequency and relative density of cyanobacterial populations in the microbial mats showed that 11 species from 8 genera were abundant and 6 species (Phormidium angustissimum, P. tenue, P. uncinatum Schizothrix vaginata, Nostoc kihlmanii and Plectonema terebrans) could be considered as dominant species in the study area. REPORT ON THE ICHTHYO FAUNA OF ANNA AND MADURAI DISTRICTS" TAMIL NADU T J.INDRA Zooloqrcal Survey of India, Madras INTRODUCTION During the years 1986-1987, Zoological Survey of India, Southern Regional Station, carried out two extensive surveys of Anna and Madurai Districts, in Tamil Nadu, under the Mopping Survey Scheme. Madurai District is traversed by the river Vaigai and its tributaries such as Theni, Surali and Moolar. These are seasonal rivers. Apart from these water ways there are few lakes i.e. Kodaikanal Lake and Berijam Lake in Anna District. Some water falls and hillstreams were also surveyed for their Ichthyo fauna. The Vaigai Dam across' Vaigai river near Madurai and Sathiar Dam also near Madurai were also surveyed. No comprehensive account on the fish fauna of Anna and Madurai Districts is available and therefore, a list of fishes from these districts is worth reporting. The data under each species includes its first reference, number of examples, their size range in mm. in standard length, area of collection, date of collection, geographical distribution and remarks (wherever variations are observed). In all there are 34 species in the present collection of 560 examples (503 adults and 57 juveniles) belonging to 9 families. Puntius arenatus (Day) is being reported for the first time from Vaigai Dam. Puntius filamentosus (Valenciennes) and Puntius mahecola (Val.) were treated as two distinct species in accordance with the findings of Selvaraj, Mathew and Abraham (1986-87). Jayaram (1981) was followed for the identification and distribution of fishes. -

We work also on microbial nanoparticles; leptospirosis; molecular diagnostics; metagenomics; probiotics; marine bacterial endosymbionts and rhizosphere biology. The department is unique in having a host of faculty trained in advanced areas of research in different countries around the world. They are now engaged in developing the required manpower on modern microbiology, molecular biology and biotechnology in this country.
