William Poole - the Real "Bill the Butcher"
William Poole - The Real "Bill The Butcher" William Poole was a Nativist enforcer of The Native American Party, also known as The Know Nothing Party, which was a faction of the American Republican Party. The Know Nothing was a movement created by Nativists whom believed that the overwhelming immigration of German and Irish Catholic immigrants were a threat to republican values and controlled by the Pope in Rome. They were dubbed the Know Nothings by outsiders of their semi-secret organization. This had nothing to do with them knowing anything. It had to do with their reply when asked of the organization's activities, often stating, "I know nothing." Bill the Butcher was a leader of The Bowery Boys and known for his skills as being a good bare knuckle boxer. Poole's trade was that of a butcher, and was infuriated when many butchering licenses were being handed out to Irish immigrants. William Poole was born in Sussex County, New Jersey to parents of English protestant descent. His family moved to New York City in 1832 to open a butcher shop in Washington Market, Manhattan. Bill Poole trained in his father's trade and eventually took over the family store. In the 1840s, he worked with the Howard (Red Rover) Volunteer Fire Engine Company #34, Hudson & Christopher Street. Uunlike in the movie, William "The Butcher" Poole was shot in real life. However, he was shot at Stanwix Hall, a bar on Broadway near Prince. William Poole did not die in a glorious street battle against his Irish enemies. Instead, he died from the gun wound at his home on Christopher Street. -

Congress has long recognized that this problem affects a number of issues of federal concern, and federal legislation has been introduced in the 109th Congress to address the subject. Youth gangs have been an endemic feature of American urban life. They are well attested as early as the 18th century and have been a recurrent subject of concern since then. Contemporary views of the problem have been formed against the background of a significant adverse secular trend in gang activity during the last four decades. In particular, the rapid growth of gang membership, geographical dispersion, and criminal involvement during the violent crime epidemic — associated with the emergence of the crack cocaine market during the mid-1980s to the early 1990s — have intensified current concerns. The experience of those years continues to mark both patterns of gang activity and public policy responses toward them. Reports about the increased activity and recent migration of a violent California- based gang, the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13), have heightened concerns about gangs in certain areas of the country. Policy development and implementation in this area are bedeviled by discrepant uses of the term “gang” and the absence of uniform standards of statistical reporting. -

The Communal Legitimacy of Collective Violence: Community and Politics in Antebellum New York City Irish Gang Subculture by James Peter Phelan A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in History Department of History and Classics University of Alberta ©James Phelan, 2014 ii Abstract This thesis examines the influences that New York City‘s Irish-Americans had on the violence, politics, and underground subcultures of the antebellum era. During the Great Famine era of the Irish Diaspora, Irish-Americans in Five Points, New York City, formed strong community bonds, traditions, and a spirit of resistance as an amalgamation of rural Irish and urban American influences. By the middle of the nineteenth century, Irish immigrants and their descendants combined community traditions with concepts of American individualism and upward mobility to become an important part of the antebellum era‘s ―Shirtless Democracy‖ movement. The proto-gang political clubs formed during this era became so powerful that by the late 1850s, clashes with Know Nothing and Republican forces, particularly over New York‘s Police force, resulted in extreme outbursts of violence in June and July, 1857. By tracking the Five Points Irish from famine to riot, this thesis as whole illuminates how communal violence and the riots of 1857 may be understood, moralised, and even legitimised given the community and culture unique to Five Points in the antebellum era. iii Table of Contents Introduction ................................................................................................................................... -

1 ❖ History of Gangs in the United States Introduction A widely respected chronicler of British crime, Luke Pike (1873), reported the first active gangs in Western civilization. While Pike documented the existence of gangs of highway robbers in England during the 17th century, it does not appear that these gangs had the features of modern-day, serious street gangs. Later in the 1600s, London was “terrorized by a series of organized gangs calling themselves the Mims, Hectors, Bugles, Dead Boys [and they] fought pitched battles among themselves dressed with colored ribbons to distinguish the different factions” (Pearson, 1983, p. 188). According to Sante (1991), the history of street gangs in the United States began with their emer- gence on the East Coast around 1783, as the American Revolution ended. These gangs emerged in rapidly growing eastern U.S. cities, out of the conditions created in large part by multiple waves of large-scale immigration and urban overcrowding. This chapter examines the emergence of gang activity in four major U.S. regions, as classified by the U.S. Census Bureau: the Northeast, Midwest, West, and South. The purpose of this regional focus is to develop a better understanding of the origins of gang activity and to examine regional migration and cultural influences on gangs themselves. Unlike the South, in the Northeast, Midwest, and West regions, major phases characterize gang emergence. FALL 1991 167 Censorship: An Historical Interpretation Gregory D. Black In Giuseppe Tornatore's Cinema Paradiso, a nostalgic look at growing up in a small Sicilian village, the local movie theater dominates the social life of the town. Everyone, it seems, went to the movies because they brought information, entertainment, excitement, and romance to the village. But at least one person feared the power and influence of this modern entertainment. The local priest insisted on censoring the films before they contaminated his flock with the infectious immorality of the outside world. As one villager complained: "I haven't seen a kiss in twenty years!" The experience of those who attended the Cinema Paradiso, while extreme, was shared by movie fans the world over. Convinced that films were capable of seductively changing the moral, ethical, and political values of the audience, censors and moral guardians from Sicily to Hollywood fought to prevent films from achieving the artistic freedom the other art forms enjoyed. Nowhere was this more true than in America. While the Italian priest tried to protect his flock from "immorality," films were also censored for political content. An analysis of films made in Hollywood from 1930 to the 1960s would show that only a handful dealt with such issues as depression, unemployment, changing moral standards, social reform, racism, fascism, communism and war with the level of realism and honesty they deserved. Hollywood was seemingly ruled by the old adage, attributed to Samuel Goldwyn, "if you have a message, send it by Western Union." Marked by fluff, rather than substance, Hollywood filmmakers were committed to "harmless entertainment." But why was the industry so afraid of making films other than the westerns, cops and robbers, mindless comedies, action thrillers and musicals that dominated studio production? One answer is obvious. -
The Irish-American Gangster in Film
Farrell 1 THE IRISH-AMERICAN GANGSTER IN FILM By Professor Steven G. Farrell 1 Farrell 2 When The Godfather was released in the early seventies, it effectively created a myth of the virtually unbeatable Italian crime family for the American public that endured for the remainder of the century. This film also effectively eliminated all other white ethnic organized gangs from the silver screen, as well as from the public’s eye. Hollywood, as we shall see, had their history wrong in this case. The Italian Mafia was never as invincible as Hollywood depicted it on film, nor did they always have everything their own way when it came to illegal activities. It wasn’t until the close of the last century that the film industry began to expose the old-time hoods as being fallible and besieged on all sides from new criminal elements connected with newly arrived immigrant groups. The Cubans, Russians and the Colombian hoods, along with the longer established African and Mexican American gangs, had begun to nibble away at the turf long controlled by the almighty Italian mob. As the paradigm of the urban underworld began to shift to reflect the new realities of the global economy, another look at the past by historians and Hollywood is revealing that the Italian gang never had absolute power as it was once commonly believed. The Irish hoodlums, to single out the subject of this paper, were actually engaged in gangland activities years before the arrival of the Italians and the Irish also competed with the Italians up until recently. -

As the variety of media exhibition platforms expands and as discourse about films permeates a greater number of communication media, the use of generic terms has never been more multiform or observable. Fundamental problems in the very conception of film genre have yet to be addressed adequately, and film genre study has carried on despite its untenable theoretical footing. Synthesizing pragmatic genre theory, constructivist film theory, Bourdieusian fan studies, and rhetorical genre studies, the dissertation aims to work through the radical implications of pragmatic genre theory and account for genres role in interpretation, evaluation, and rhetorical framing as part of broader, recurring social activities. This model rejects textualist and realist foundations for film genre; only pragmatic genre use can serve as a foundation for understanding film genres. From this perspective, the concept of genre is reconstructed according to its interpretive and rhetorical functions rather than a priori assumptions about the text or transtextual structures.
