  • Reality Inspired Games: Expanding the Lens of Games’ Claims to Authenticity
Reality Inspired Games: Expanding the Lens of Games’ Claims to Authenticity Robyn McMillan, Darshana Jayemanne, Iain Donald School of Design and Informatics, Division of Games and Arts University of Abertay Bell Street, Dundee DD1 1HG +44 1382 308000 robynajmcmillan@gmail.com d.jayemanne@abertay.ac.uk i.donald@abertay.ac.uk ABSTRACT This paper considers the potentials of contemporary games staking claims to realism through documentary and journalistic techniques as part of a wide-ranging cultural and technological phenomenon– ‘Reality Inspired Games’ or RIGs (Maurin, 2018). We argue that RIGs employ design techniques and strategies of legitimation that are valuable to the reactive development cycles in the indie sector, whilst also being beneficial for academic research and development. Through examining traditional documentary and the concept of Bruzzi’s performative documentary (2006) we highlight how this concept may allow developers to negotiate performativity and authenticity in their videogames. We discuss examples of such games in the realm of indie productions, such as That Dragon, Cancer (2016), This War of Mine (2014), and My Child Lebensborn (2018) and Bury Me, My Love (2017). All of which represent new ground for game design, documentary and journalistic techniques that have influenced our work on the MacMillan project. Keywords Reality Inspired Games, Documentary, Performativity, Indie “Much like photographs, paintings, literature and music are capable of transmitting the full range of the human experience from one human to another, so too can games. Due to their interactivity, games are capable of a higher form of communication, one which actively engages the participant and makes them a part of the experience rather than a passive observer” (Brathwaite & Sharp, 2010, p315).

  • Video Games and the Mobilization of Anxiety and Desire
PLAYING THE CRISIS: VIDEO GAMES AND THE MOBILIZATION OF ANXIETY AND DESIRE BY ROBERT MEJIA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Kent A. Ono, Chair Professor John Nerone Professor Clifford Christians Professor Robert A. Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games.

  • Art Worlds for Art Games Edited
Loading… The Journal of the Canadian Game Studies Association Vol 7(11): 41-60 http://loading.gamestudies.ca An Art World for Artgames Felan Parker York University felan.parker@hotmail.com Abstract Drawing together the insights of game studies, aesthetics, and the sociology of art, this article examines the legitimation of ‘artgames’ as a category of indie games with particularly high cultural and artistic status. Passage (PC, Mac, Linux, iOS, 2007) serves as a case study, demonstrating how a diverse range of factors and processes, including a conducive ‘opportunity space’, changes in independent game production, distribution, and reception, and the emergence of a critical discourse, collectively produce an assemblage or ‘art world’ (Baumann, 2007a; 2007b) that constitutes artgames as legitimate art. Author Keywords Artgames; legitimation; art world; indie games; critical discourse; authorship; Passage; Rohrer Introduction The seemingly meteoric rise to widespread recognition of ‘indie’ digital games in recent years is the product of a much longer process made up of many diverse elements. It is generally accepted as a given that indie games now play an important role in the industry and culture of digital games, but just over a decade ago there was no such category in popular discourse – independent game production went by other names (freeware, shareware, amateur, bedroom) and took place in insular, autonomous communities of practice focused on particular game-creation tools or genres, with their own distribution networks, audiences, and systems of evaluation, only occasionally connected with a larger marketplace. Even five years ago, the idea of indie games was still burgeoning and becoming stable, and it is the historical moment around 2007 that I will address in this article.

  • P.T Game Pc Download Punity
p.t game pc download Punity. Punity is the Windows adaptation of the brilliant game P.T., the Silent Hills technical demo by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro that so thoroughly amazed and terrified players on Playstation 4. In this tribute to the Konami classic, players walk through the legendary terrifying hallway. The game system in Punity is very similar to the original P.T. Players can walk up and down the sinister hallway and take in all the details. The sounds, bumps, and strange movements you'll start noticing are what make this game amazing. The game has very similar graphics to the technical demo mentioned earlier. Most surprisingly, it uses the versatile motor Unity, so if you have a powerful operating system and can set the graphics at the highest settings, you'll be able to enjoy this spectacular terror even more. Silent Hills' P.T. teaser is now playable on PC thanks to fan remakes. P.T. was the playable teaser for Silent Hills—the reboot of the Silent Hill series that was cancelled in 2015—and even though it was short it still ranks among the best horror games of all time (and certainly one of the scariest). It never made it to PC, but thanks to a couple of fan remakes you can now give it a whirl on your mouse and keyboard. The first remake is called Corridors, and is a recreation of the game in Unreal Engine 4. It's still very much a work in progress (expect bugs), and creator SmoggyChips plans to update it with more levels in the future.

Mukokuseki and the Narrative Mechanics in Japanese Games Hiloko Kato and René Bauer “In fact the whole of Japan is a pure invention. There is no such country, there are no such peo- ple.”1 “I do realize there’s a cultural difference be- tween what Japanese people think and what the rest of the world thinks.”2 “I just want the same damn game Japan gets to play, translated into English!”3 Space Invaders, Frogger, Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., Final Fantasy, Street Fighter, Sonic The Hedgehog, Pokémon, Harvest Moon, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, Metal Gear Solid, Zelda, Katamari, Okami, Hatoful Boyfriend, Dark Souls, The Last Guardian, Sekiro. As this very small collection shows, Japanese arcade and video games cover the whole range of possible design and gameplay styles and define a unique way of narrating stories. Many titles are very successful and renowned, but even though they are an integral part of Western gaming culture, they still retain a certain otherness. This article explores the uniqueness of video games made in Japan in terms of their narrative mechanics. For this purpose, we will draw on a strategy which defines Japanese culture: mukokuseki (borderless, without a nation) is a concept that can be interpreted either as Japanese commod- ities erasing all cultural characteristics (“Mario does not invoke the image of Ja- 1 Wilde (2007 [1891]: 493). 2 Takahashi Tetsuya (Monolith Soft CEO) in Schreier (2017). 3 Funtime Happysnacks in Brian (@NE_Brian) (2017), our emphasis. 114 | Hiloko Kato and René Bauer pan” [Iwabuchi 2002: 94])4, or as a special way of mixing together elements of cultural origins, creating something that is new, but also hybrid and even ambig- uous.

  • Audience-Producer Relationships and Their Effect on Let's Play
“We can show that!” Audience-Producer Relationships and Their Effect on Let’s Play Production Nikki Miller 1 According to popular belief and Internet rumor, the start of the Let’s Play, abbreviated as LP in this paper, as it became known as a video medium, is attributed to user Michael “slowbeef” Sawyer on the Something Awful forums in 2007. Sawyer used an emulator to provide a walkthrough for The Immortal on the SEGA Genesis. Although there is no in-game audio, Sawyer provides what he described as a kind of “player’s commentary” as he played the game, and thus, the modern LP was born. Sawyer actually goes further back on the forums and credits the idea to text-and-image-based LPs, where forum users would document their playing experience using screenshots, and others would chime in with ideas or hints. Although there is no evidence of it in the archives, Kotaku and members of the Something Awful forum credit the coining of the term “Let’s Play” to a fabled Oregon Trail thread, where “‘someone would start a story and draw panels/images, with thread posters dictating where the story went next’” (Karlsson in Klepek, 2015). This Oregon Trail thread has since been lost to time, as it no longer exists in the Something Awful Forum archives, and exists only in user memories. Following that one, the next LP in this form to gain popularity was one of I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream, which itself credits the original Oregon Trail thread. Not only did this LP explode with users who had never even bothered to engage with this kind of post on the forum, it ended with a video file of the end of the game.

  • Playing to Death • Ken S
Playing to Death • Ken S. McAllister and Judd Ethan Ruggill The authors discuss the relationship of death and play as illuminated by computer games. Although these games, they argue, do illustrate the value of being—and staying—alive, they are not so much about life per se as they are about providing gamers with a playground at the edge of mortality. Using a range of visual, auditory, and rule-based distractions, computer games both push thoughts of death away from consciousness and cultivate a percep- tion that death—real death—is predictable, controllable, reasonable, and ultimately benign. Thus, computer games provide opportunities for death play that is both mundane and remarkable, humbling and empowering. The authors label this fundamental characteristic of game play thanatoludism. Key words: computer games; death and play; thanatoludism Mors aurem vellens: Vivite ait venio. —Appendix Vergiliana, “Copa” Consider here a meditation on death. Or, more specifically, a meditation on play and death, which are mutual and at times even complementary pres- ences in the human condition. To be clear, by meditation we mean just that: a pause for contemplation, reflection, and introspection. We do not promise an empirical, textual, or theoretical analysis, though there are echos of each in what follows. Rather, we intend an interlude in which to ponder the interconnected phenomena of play and death and to introduce a critical tool—terror manage- ment theory—that we find helpful for thinking about how play and death interact in computer games. Johan Huizinga (1955) famously asserted that “the great archetypal activi- ties of human society are all permeated with play from the start” (4).

  • Auteur Theory in Video Games
AUTEUR THEORY IN VIDEO GAMES: RECOGNIZING HIDEO KOJIMA AND THATGAMECOMPANY AS AUTEURS IN THE VIDEO GAME MEDIUM A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE GRADUATE SCHOOL IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE MASTER OF ARTS BY JULES PATALITA DR. ASHLEY DONNELLY - ADVISOR BALL STATE UNIVERSITY MUNCIE, INDIANA JULY 2018 AUTEUR THEORY IN VIDEO GAMES 1 CHAPTER ONE-INTRODUCTION “The critic Roger Ebert once drew a crucial distinction between video games and art: he said that the ultimate objective of a video game—unlike that of a book, film, or poem—is to achieve a high score, vaporize falling blocks, or save the princess. Art, he argued, cannot be won” (Parker, 2013, para. 1). This shows a longstanding stereotype about video games, that they are less important than other forms of entertainment. “The joke is, video games are inherently stupid. Once you realize that this is the fundamental underlying narrative of the culture with respect to video games, so much else starts to make sense…I refer to this condition as game shame” (Burgan, 2013, p. 93). But is there reason behind this shame? Even if this was true with the arcade games of the 80s, the medium has surely evolved beyond this criticism. Now on par with the budgets of Hollywood releases, the video game industry is producing games with financial success rivaling film. In 2016, American consumers spent $30.4 billion on video game content; since just 2010, there’s been an almost $10 billion rise in revenue (Entertainment Software Association, 2017). This is calculating just American consumers, a fraction of the overall consumers of the medium.
