Shelby Mustang or Boat?

By Richard Teeple MOCSEM Member

Photos by Gary Brewer MOCSEM Editor

After saving for over 30 years for my retirement dream, I finally had to make a decision, Mustang or boat? You can probably figure out the answer.

I was bitten by "The Ford Mustang" bug at the early age of 19, owning a 1970 Mustang Boss 302. I have owned my share of muscle cars throughout out the years but none have compared to that first "Mustang Experience." I am now exceeding my youth car experience with a new Kona Blue Supercharged 2012 Ford Shelby Mustang GT350.

My Shelby is number 71 of maybe 100 +. I had over 30 upgrades performed at Shelby America including: Whipple Supercharger, 3.73 gears, track cooling package, Wildwood brakes, Boria 3" exhaust, Ford/Shelby racing suspension with Tokico adjustable shocks, and Ford Racing anti roll suspension kit to name a few. All this resulted in 0-60 MPH in 3.7 sec., 1/4 mile in 11.62 sec at 122 MPH, and 1.05g on the skid pad.

Most people wouldn't wait nine months for a new car purchase, but that is how long it takes. It was well worth it because it turned into an investment. My visit to Shelby America in Las Vegas, Nevada confirmed my purchase decision. The Shelby tour and people were outstanding, keeping me informed and updated on my purchase. Village Ford of Dearborn, Michigan was also very instrumental with my Shelby purchase. The sales and service staff walked me through the specific details for a " Shelby Mustang Build" and made the process easy.

The most important aspect of my "Mustang Experience" is the people you meet along the way. Since joining MOCSEM, I have made many wonderful MOCSEM friends and have been able to share my "Mustang Experience" with a diverse and talented group of Mustang enthusiasts.

For more information about my car you can visit www.ShelbyAmerica.com and www.VillageFord.com.

From there east on I-40 to Albuquerque, down to Dallas, then up through Tulsa and home. It would take almost three weeks. We chose to leave Wixom on August 29 hoping to miss the worst of the heat out west.

The first day, just west of Jackson, not even two hours into the trip, we got pulled over by a state trooper! When he ran our license plate (CJ LITE), it had come back as “not registered.” So we showed him our registration and he showed me his computer screen. The problem partially resulted from the car being unregistered for 25 years so the title wasn't in the State’s computer.

OMG it was hot! No A/C, remember? We had a little digital thermometer in the car and it said it was mid 90s outside and over 100 inside most of the time. It was hard to find a place inside that wasn’t directly affected by the heat boiling off the

Later that day we went on to Tracy, CA for a big dinner with It was time to head for home. Through Tulsa, OK and a 13-1/2 family members, stayed overnight with them, and headed for Los hour final day getting home a little after midnight. Osos the next morning where we spent the afternoon and night with our childhood friend and neighbor. We had a great time and it really was, "A Dream Come True"

Here’s an observation: All the way west along I-80 to CA and down the west coast and then as far east as Lake Havasu City, there was always a lot of interest in the car at gas stations and on the road. From Lake Havasu City through Dallas and up through MO, there was very little interest. From MO to MI, the interest in the car was back. Maybe muscle-car interest is a regional thing?

Toward Los Angeles on our way to Palm Springs, we stopped at a Shell station north of Santa Barbara and bought the most expensive gas of the whole trip - $4.99/gallon.

I haven’t mentioned before what a royal pain it is to put gas in a 1969 Mustang. The filler is in the lower back panel just above the bumper, and it’s not much higher than the top of the tank. Putting gas in without having it gush back out all over the place is almost impossible. Forget about topping off the tank.

Then we experienced modern LA freeway traffic, like being caught in a 1000-car draft at the Daytona 500. Everybody was going too fast and following too close and I was just hoping for a caution flag. Yesterday - 1969 With the tangle of freeways around and through LA, I had no clue of how to make our way to Palm Springs. We trusted the GPS and it took us around the northern periphery of LA. But the heat again became awful as we got into the desert: 104F and humid is not a lot of fun.

After spending the weekend with relatives in Palm Springs, we were off to San Diego, then on to Carlsbad, Anaheim, Torrance and Banning. The next morning, the car would not start, again. After a jump, we were on our way across the desert to Lake Havasu City to visit more friends. Time to install the solid state voltage regulator

The car is low in the front with the 2” dropped spindles. The headers hang lower than the original system anyway. Coming across the desert on an undulating road, they scraped in almost every dip unless I slowed down a lot. I knew before we left that it was a problem, so I had welded an extra thickness of metal on Today - 2012 the area that was getting the most road wear. A final note: We covered 6,412 miles and used 424.3 gallons of Next stop was Albuquerque, NM and on to Dallas to visit with premium gas. The average MPG was 15.1. Oil consumption at more friends. On the way, we found out the starting problem was the end of the trip was 2,000 miles/qt. After getting home, I found not fixed. While in Dallas, we checked the exhaust headers and the starter had an intermittent short in a field coil. Should have charged the battery and that seemed take care of the problem. taken the spare starter with us! Maybe the Halogen and LED lights were too much for the alternator to handle. Restart problem still not fixed.
