Concert Auditions: 2021–2022 CSUN Wind Ensemble & CSUN Wind

CLARINET

Audition Repertory: For each excerpt start at each arrow. Stop at the double-slash. • Steven Bryant, Radiant Joy • Camille Saint-Saëns, Orient et Occident • Dwayne Milburn, American Hymn Suite

Note well: • Perform the excerpts in order. • Skip over multi-measure rests. • It is important to familiarize yourself with the band works from which the excerpts are taken. Listen to multiple recordings of the works to help understand style, context, and tempo possibilities. Use YouTube, Spotify, iTunes, etc. as valuable resources for recordings. • Prepare each excerpt to the best of your ability.

Special Considerations for Fall 2021 due to COVID: • Both the Wind Ensemble and the Wind Symphony will meet in-person and on-campus this Fall semester! Exact logistical details are still being formulated by the University administration. • Your assignment into a particular concert band will take into account (1) your audition, and (2) the need to form multiple mini-band ensembles and equally distribute students between the two concert bands. The number of students assigned to a particular band might be different than in past semesters. • Placement auditions might be required again in December or January in advance of the Spring 2022 semester.

Audition results will be E-mailed to all students by Sunday, August 29 (the day before classes begin). Due to current COVID protocols, auditions this year will be completed using video recordings in lieu of in-person auditions. Please read the instructions below regarding the recording procedure.

VIDEO RECORD YOUR AUDITION: 1. You may use a camcorder, smart phone, computer, or any other equipment to create your video. 2. A high-quality microphone is encouraged, but most cells phones and laptop computers have microphones that are adequate for your audio recording. Please use whatever you have available. 3. Perform the audition excerpts in order in a single take (do not turn your camera off in between excerpts). 4. Your audition video should be a single, MP4 or MOV file.

RECORDING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. You may sit or stand. 2. Set up the video camera to capture both your instrument and face. 3. At the beginning of the recording, introduce yourself by saying: “First and Last Name; Instrument; Year (Freshman, Sophomore, Junior, Senior, Grad).” 4. Perform the audition excerpts in order and in one continuous take (do not turn your camera off in between excerpts). 5. Save your recording into a single video file, 1 GB maximum file size. Acceptable file formats are either MP4 or MOV. (Your file will likely be well under 1 GB.) 6. If you need to convert your file into MP4 or MOV, there are many free websites that will convert video files. You may use any of these free sites, including https://cloudconvert.com/video-converter.

UPLOADING INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Upload your recording using this Google Forms link: https://forms.gle/h2LsSru9pDLDaw7ZA 2. Upload your recording by Tuesday, August 24th to ensure full consideration
