    Decision-Support System for Spatially Distributed Multi-Hazard Risk Analysis Maryna Zharikovaa, Volodymyr Sherstjuka, Bohdan Sakovycha a Kherson National Technical University, 24 Berislav Road, Kherson, 73008, Ukraine Abstract The paper dwells on a dynamic spatially distributed model of multi-hazard risk analysis for critical infrastructure elements, which is meant to assess risk indecision-support systems. Multi-hazard risk is centered around a model of the socio-economic system, hazard dynamics model, a model of the dynamic vulnerability of critical infrastructure elements, and a model of multi-hazard risk assessment. The hazard dynamics model represents the knowledge about the dynamics of hazards, their interactions and cascading effects using plausible event-tree networks with the events having both temporal and spatial reference. Multi-hazard risk analysis model allows assessing integrated dynamic spatially distributed multi-hazard risk in decision-support systems dealing with a threat, vulnerability, damage, cascading and domino effects. The risk scenarios within the decision-support system can describe multi-hazard risk as a multitude of spatially distributed dynamic processes influenced by a various range of drivers. The practical use of the proposed model is also considered. These regions are Zaporizhzhia and Kherson oblasts (counties) of Ukraine. Legislation analysis was conducted for wind energy regulations in Ukraine. Analysis of foreign legislation was done in the aspects where the correspondent Ukrainian legislation doesn’t exist yet (e.g. about bird reserves). Otherwise, standards of international researchers were used. I made analysis of works of other researchers to define factors and distances for suitability map. The most important and commonly used factors are: settlements, road network, nature protection areas, bird reserves, power lines, railways, slope degree, airports, water bodies, wind speed and land use. Data is taken from different sources (open data, international, governmental), depending on quality. Methods used in my research are GIS analysis, multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) and analytical hierarchy process (AHP). I chose the most important factors using MCDM method and graded them according to their importance using AHP method. Unsuitable areas excluded and maps for each criteria were made. As final result, two maps were created: Equal Weights map and map with factors graded by AHP.

This research attempted to estimate the level of light pollution on the protected territories of the National Nature Parks (NNPs), Biosphere and Nature Reserves in the Steppe Zone and Crimea Mountains of Ukraine. Kmz layers of these protected territories and the New World Atlas of Artificial Sky Brightness, through Google Earth Pro, were used to calculate the level of artificial sky brightness for 15 NNPs, three Biosphere Reserves and 10 Nature Reserves. The results show that even some of the most protected areas within the Steppe Zone and Crimean Mountains are impacted by ALAN. Of the studied protected areas 44.2% have a natural dark night sky, 40.1% have artificial brightness ranging between 8 and 16%, and the remainder (15.7%) are polluted with an artificial brightness greater than 16%.

    Olbia – an ancient Greek town on the northern Black Sea coast Olbia lies at the mouth of the river Bug and was founded around 7 BC by colonists from Miletus. The excursion from Odessa to Olbia archaeological site takes you through incredible landscapes in the region of the southern Bug and the Dnieper. Both rivers were important waterways in ancient times and remain so today. The entire region is of enormous significance in terms of the ethnography of Ukraine. 1 A journey from Odessa to the archaeological excavations of an ancient Greek polis takes you through an amazing region of the Southern Ukraine: The Pobu- zhe (around the Southern Bug river) and the Podneprov’e (around the river Dnieper). These historically vital waterways are both a unique natural ecosys- tem and culturally sacred, central to the formation of the Ukrainian national identity. The polis Olbia was founded during the time of the great Greek colonisa- tion in the 6th century B.C. According to archaeologists, the father of history himself — Herodotus — settled here in 450 B.C. and composed the fourth vol- ume of his “Histories”, “Melpomene”. Alexander the Great’s army failed to take this city and it survived until the 4th century A.D., when it was destroyed by the Huns and never rebuilt. This fact makes it all the more valuable to academic study as it is one of very few ancient cities whose ruins were not covered by subsequent medieval settlements. One of the most intriguing topics to study in relation to the ancient Mediterranean world, is the establishment of mutual cooperation between the Hellenic and other peoples (the Barbarians).

    Bulletin 8 of the European Dry Grassland Group Welcome to the eighth Bulletin of the EDGG. In this autumn issue we bring the first circular of the 8th European Dry Grassland Meeting, which will take place in Uman (Ukraine) in June 2011. At the same time, information on other forthcoming events focussing on grassland ecosystems is included. The role of bats in grassland ecosystems is highlighted in the contribution from Mount Varnous (Greece). The detailed introduction to the co-operating organisations, Floristisch- Soziologische Arbeitsgemeinschaft e. V.
