  • Star Wars by Matt Zoller Seitz “The a List: the National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films,” 2002
Star Wars By Matt Zoller Seitz “The A List: The National Society of Film Critics’ 100 Essential Films,” 2002 Reprinted by permission of the author Of all the films of the 1970s, none was more influen- tial than “Star Wars.” Other landmark works from that era could rightly claim to be more complex, more challenging, more adult, but none could claimed to be more widely seen and enjoyed. (Many saw it more than once.) This mythic adventure about a gee- whiz farm boy rescuing a princess and saving the galaxy proved that a primitive fairy tale with high-tech effects could thrill moviegoers the world over, regard- less of language, cultural difference, even age. It made stars outs of its unknown leads — Mark Hamill, Carrie Fischer, Harrison Ford — and spawned a spinoff industry peddling tie-in merchandise, from toys and T-shirts to comic books and trading cards. It introduced new visual effects and sound technology that would change how films were produced. Its un- precedented financial success — the top grossing film of all time with $250 million in box office and $1 billion in merchandising — convinced the studios to abandon their old financial model, wherein lots of money was earned by lots of films, and embrace a new model, wherein ever-increasing amounts of money and effort were devoted to developing more movies like “Star Wars. Original release poster. Courtesy Library of Congress. The film’s detractors (they are numerous) often for- get that on paper “Star Wars” seemed weird and un- commercial. Lucas, an intense, detail-oriented film- mentor, Obi-Wan Kenobi (Alec Guinness); Princess school grad, wanted to make “Star Wars” for years, Leia (Fisher), a tough-talking, straight-shooting diplo- but the major studios kept turning him away, fearing mat-spy who knew the whereabouts of plans that audiences still shaken by Vietnam, Woodstock, and could defeat the empire; Han Solo (Ford) , a cocky Watergate would laugh an earnest space fantasy space smuggler with a seven-foot-tall nonhuman right off the screen.

  • Star Wars, Star Authenticity, and Cinematic Anachronism
Accepted for publication in Celebrity Studies published by Taylor and Francis. The version of record is available at: https://doi.org/10.1080/19392397.2018.1563337 The Analogue Strikes Back: Star Wars, Star Authenticity, and Cinematic Anachronism David Fleming, University of Stirling, Scotland Adam Knee, Lasalle College of the Arts, Singapore It is a basic maxim of celebrity studies that for Hollywood cinema—as indeed for most rationalized film industries—star presence is a key means of product differentiation, and thus central to profitability. In many ways this remains as much if not more so under contemporary blockbuster economics: Blockbusters of course rely heavily on big budget special effects and narrative ‘hooks’, but producers generally also want their multi-million dollar investments protected with the presence of commensurately expensive big-name stars, which can help guarantee a baseline attendance level. This essay will make the case that Star Wars: The Force Awakens (J.J. Abrams, 2015), one of the most highly publicized and widely anticipated of recent blockbuster films, embodies this reliance upon star presence in an exceptional and extreme way, to an extent that produces significant textual effects at a variety of levels. We here also expand the notion of the ‘star’ to account for the non- human, the non-biological, and the more-than-human, for reasons that will shortly become clear. More specifically, we shall argue, The Force Awakens is premised upon and preoccupied with the authentic and in a way authenticating presence

From Anakin Skywalker to Darth Vader: understanding Star Wars based on Theodore Millon´s theory of personality pathology. J Med Mov [Internet] 2017;13(3): 121‐126. Summary The aim of this work was to psychologically investigate Anakin Skywalker (also known as Darth Vader), using a non sistematic idiographic clinic analysis, based on Thedore Millon theory, with solid theoretical and empirical bases for personality pathological traits and personality disorders. The character Anakin Skywalker allows this analysis, since in the films it is possible to observe fragments of his childhood, adolescence and adult life, making viable an analysis of his psychological development. According to Millon´s theory and the information from the movies, we present as a conclusion a possible pathological personality funtioning for the character. Keywords: Personality disorders; Borderline personality disorder; Personality development; Cinema.
