This brochure is meant to be a virtual guide for you during your stay. You will find here details not only about the International Master Course Week , but also about transportation, accommodation and a few things about the main tourist attractions as well. We wish you a pleasant stay and we are looking forward to meeting you and making this week to remember! 3 Page Page KATOWICE – SHORT HISTORY - 1299 First recorded settlement (area around Katowice) ruled by Polish Silesian Piast dynasty - 1335 Territory becomes a part of Crown of Bohemia - 1526 Territory passed to Austrian Habsburg Monarchy - 1742 Territory becomes a part of Pruss ian empire during First Silesian War - 1788 The first mine was opened - 1847 Railway station built - 1865 Municipal rights gained by ‘Kattowitz’ in the Prussian Province of Silesia - 1871 Kattowitz is incorporated into German Empire - 1921 a plebiscite in Upper Silesia (a consequence of Versailles Treaty after World War I - 1922 The League of Nations decided that Upper Silesia should be divided between Poland and Germany. The best way to get the hotel is: - to take the bus from the Piotra Skargi street (near Supersam shopping center ), bus no: 80 0, 805, 807, 808, 811, 815 , 835 (the ticket costs PLN 1.60 for the students, PLN 3.20 full price): you should get off at Katowice Strefa Kultury , close to Novotel/ibis buildings. https://rj.kzkgop.com.pl/?lang=en - to take the tram – from the Szewczyka Square (Plac Szewczyka) , near train station and Galeria Katowicka (shopping center): no 7 (direction ZAWODZIE PETLA), no 15 (direction ZAGORZE PETLA), no 20 (direction SZOPIENICE PETLA); The ticket costs PLN 1.60 for th e students, PLN 3.20 full price. You should get off at the third stop ‘Katowice Graniczna’ (1 st stop is ‘Katowice Rynek ’ (Main Square with the theater), 2 nd ‘Katowice Damrota’ with the church on the right ). At the tram stop you should see the Senator hotel, cross the road in that direction into Dudy -Gracza street (keep left side) and walk till the bridge over the river. The hotel should be seen on your left side. - to walk (the map below) keep Skargi street till Aleja Korfantego, cross it and go into Moniuszki street along with the river (little one!) till the hotel. 8 Page Page IF YOU USE THE TRAIN TO KATOWICE you arrive to the main station in the city center: When you leave the platforms, you should find out the entrance into Szewczyk square (Plac Szewczyka). The best way to get the hotel is: - to take the tram – from the Szewczyka Square: no 7 (direction ZAWODZIE PETLA), no 15 (direction ZAGORZE PETLA), no 20 (direction SZOPIENICE PETLA).
