PREFACE. Les journaux ont annoncé, au commencement de l'an dernier, que Son Honneur le lieutenant-gouverneur de la province de Québec avait, par l'entremise du comité littéraire et historique du Cercle catholique de Québec, généreusement offert une médaille d'argent et une autre en bronze pour les deux meilleures études sur "Jacques Cartier, sa vie et ses voyages." Les monographies pou- vaient être écrites en anglais ou en français et le concours était ouvert aux écrivains étrangers aussi bien qu' à ceux du pays. L'auteur de ce travail concourut avec quelques autres, et, le 25 février dernier, il avait le plaisir d'être officielle- ment informé, par le président et le secrétaire du comité, que son étude avait reçu le premier prix, dans la section anglaise. C'est cet essai qu'il soumet aujourd'hui au public. L'auteur, en publiant cette esquisse, ose espérer qu'il rencontrera, sur un champ bien plus vaste, des critiques aussi bienveillants que les juges du concours. Quelles que soient les imperfections de son travail, il peut se rendre au moins le témoignage de s'être efforce de faire ressortir, sous une forme véridique et sans prétention, les principaux faits qui se rattachent aux origines de l'histoire du Canada et de tracer une ébauche ressem- blante et fidèle de la grande figure qui anime ce tableau, C'est dans ce but qu'il a étudié et comparé avec soin les documents originaux, et vérifié attentivement les plus petits détails, chaque fois qu'il lui a été possible de le faire. L'auteur ne saurait laisser passer l'occasion qui se présente ici d'exprimer sa reconnaissance pour l'amabilité qu'il a toujours rencontrée auprès des bibliothécaires du Parlement, M. M. A. D. DeCelles et M. J. Griffin, ainsi que chez M. L. P. Sylvain, attaché à la Bibliothèque. À la générosité avec laquelle ces messieurs ont mis les ressources de la Bibliothèque à sa disposition et aux avantages qu'ils lui ont accordés pour les étudier, l'auteur doit une large part du mérite que peut avoir cet opuscule, son premier pas dans le domaine de la littérature. ANS son admirable étude sur lord Clive, Macaulay s'étonne que, tandis que l'histoire des conquêtes -(nT& des Espagnols en Amérique est familière au plus grand nombre des lecteurs, on soit si peu renseigné en Angleterre, même parmi la classe instruite, sur les pro- diges de valeur qu'ont accomplis les Anglais dans la con- quête de l'Inde ; et c'est avec raison, suivant nous, qu'il attribue cette étrange anomalie à la disparité entre les historiens de ces deux grands événements. Il est impossible de lire les ouvrages de Prescott, sans s'attacher vivement à son récit des conquêtes de Cortez ou de Pizarre. Au con- traire, les historiens des victoires anglaises dans l'Orient pèchent par une lourdeur de style qui ne peut que dégoûter le lecteur ordinaire. Lord Macaulay lui-même a cer- tainement contribué à faire naître le goût pour l'étude des affaires d'orient, mais si l'éminent historien vivait encore, nous pourrions lui signaler un contraste bien plus 12 frappant que celui que lui suggérait l'ignorance, parmi la classe moyenne, en Angleterre, des événements et des peu- ples de l'Inde.     Press release Zurich/Geneva, 17 April 2019 Global Powers of Luxury Goods: Swiss luxury companies are taking the digital path to accelerate growth • The sales of the world’s Top 100 luxury goods companies grew by 11% and generated aggregated revenues of USD 247 billion in fiscal year 2017 • Richemont, Swatch Group and Rolex remain in the top league of Deloitte’s Global Powers of Luxury Goods ranking • All Swiss companies in the Top 100 returned to growth in FY2017, but with only 8% increase, they lagged behind the whole market for the third time in a row • Luxury goods companies are making significant investments in digital marketing and the use of social media to engage their customers Despite the recent slowdown of economic growth in major markets including China, the Eurozone and the US, the luxury goods market looks positive. In FY2017, the world’s Top 100 luxury goods companies generated aggregated revenues of USD 247 billion, representing composite sales growth of 10.8%, according to Deloitte’s 2019 edition of Global Powers of Luxury Goods. For comparison, in FY2016 sales were USD 217 billion and annual sales growth was as low as 1.0%. Three-fourth of the companies (76%) reported growth in their luxury sales in FY2017, with nearly half of these recording double-digit year-on-year growth. Switzerland and Hong Kong prevail in the luxury watches sector Looking at product sectors, clothing and footwear dominated again in FY2017, with a total of 38 companies. The multiple luxury goods sector represented the largest sales share (30.8%), narrowly followed by jewellery and watches (29.6%).

INTRODUCTION Several owners of luxury brands and associated trademarks brought this trademark action against 18 individuals who sold counterfeit versions of the trademarked goods and a group of offshore internet companies that promoted and facilitated the sale of these goods through several websites. Because the individual sellers have failed to respond to the complaint, the Court has entered their defaults. Now the Court addresses motions for partial summary judgment against the defendant internet companies on claims of contributory counterfeiting, contributory infringement, unfair competition and related state claims. The undisputed facts, and those without substantial controversy, definitively establish that counterfeit versions of the trademark owner’s goods were in fact sold through the defendant internet companies’ websites and that the defendant companies actively promoted and facilitated the sale of such goods. Accordingly, for these reasons and others discussed in greater detail below, the motion for partial summary judgment is GRANTED. II.
