The Guptas, the Public Protector’s Report and Capital Accumulation in South Africa Ashwin Desai Goolam Vahed Abstract The relationship between South African President Jacob Zuma and his family, and the Guptas, possibly the richest family of Indian origin at present in South Africa, has made persistent national and increasingly international headlines in the media over the past few years. The Gupta family, who arrived in South Africa from India just prior to the country’s first non-racial democratic elec- tions in 1994, are accused of colluding with Zuma in the removal and appoint- ment of government ministers, as well as the directors of State-Owned Enter- prises (SOEs) in order to secure lucrative state contracts. This article examines the allegedly corrupt relationship between the Zumas and the Guptas to probe key issues in post-apartheid South African society: corruption, state capture, inequality, class formation, Black Economic Empowerment, and White Mono- poly Capital. It argues that corruption has negative consequences such as creat- ing despondency amongst the populace leading to capital flight and creating the possibilities for state capture as well as further deepening inequality. The Lancel Escapade is touring France and Belgium, stopping off at key cities into November, giving consumers an opportunity to learn more about the brand in a memorable format. "By choosing the most emblematic cities in France & Belgium to promote its anniversary, Lancel decided to embrace the power of customers' seduction, referring to its french roots and unique brand values," said Anna Szubrycht, founder and president of Chic Being, a Santa Monica, CA-based luxury brand consultancy. "As a brand with 140 years old patrimony, it did not loose any piece of its funny side, mobility and easiness to adapt to the needs of its customers," she said. "Even the name Escapade associates with something elusive and highly desired - here and now. Press release Zurich/Geneva, 17 April 2019 Global Powers of Luxury Goods: Swiss luxury companies are taking the digital path to accelerate growth • The sales of the world’s Top 100 luxury goods companies grew by 11% and generated aggregated revenues of USD 247 billion in fiscal year 2017 • Richemont, Swatch Group and Rolex remain in the top league of Deloitte’s Global Powers of Luxury Goods ranking • All Swiss companies in the Top 100 returned to growth in FY2017, but with only 8% increase, they lagged behind the whole market for the third time in a row • Luxury goods companies are making significant investments in digital marketing and the use of social media to engage their customers Despite the recent slowdown of economic growth in major markets including China, the Eurozone and the US, the luxury goods market looks positive. In FY2017, the world’s Top 100 luxury goods companies generated aggregated revenues of USD 247 billion, representing composite sales growth of 10.8%, according to Deloitte’s 2019 edition of Global Powers of Luxury Goods. For comparison, in FY2016 sales were USD 217 billion and annual sales growth was as low as 1.0%. Three-fourth of the companies (76%) reported growth in their luxury sales in FY2017, with nearly half of these recording double-digit year-on-year growth. Switzerland and Hong Kong prevail in the luxury watches sector Looking at product sectors, clothing and footwear dominated again in FY2017, with a total of 38 companies.
