It is important that the new president has an extreme love for what Eastern stands for now and the history of Eastern. The new president would also care for what the students, faculty and staff want for the future of Eastern. Open lines of communication also is a must for the new position. It is important for the students, faculty and staff to be able to voice their concerns and have their concerns addressed accordingly by the new president. When searching for the new president, the search committee should narrow down the candidates based on previous experiences with students, faculty and staff and make sure that the reason they are leaving their previous institutions was not a hard-feelings decision, which would ultimately affect Eastern, if they were chosen as president. Eastern thanks President Surles for the time she has spent at Eastern and wishes her the best of luck with her breast cancer treatment. In the two and a half years she has spent at Eastern, the university has seen many improvements in academics and funding and has slowly started overall improvements.
