The largest festival of its kind in the Pacific Northwest, SQFF has announced its Opening and Closing Night gala screenings and launched a members-only early-bird sale of discounted tickets and passes. “Throughout this year’s festival, we reflect on the last 50 years since the Stonewall Riots, where queer rights are today, and the vast amount of work we have to do for the future,” said Ben ​ McCarthy, executive director of Three Dollar Bill Cinema, the nonprofit queer film and media ​ arts organization that produces the Seattle Queer Film Festival. “It is fitting to open the festival with the story of a legend whose life had and continues to have such an incredible impact on the queer community.” This year’s Opening Night Gala film is Sid & Judy, Showtime’s new documentary about queer ​ ​ icon Judy Garland and her tumultuous marriage to Sid Luft, her third husband. Narrated by actor Jon Hamm, the film raids Luft’s archives, providing a previously unseen cache of recordings and photographs that give fresh insight to a legendary woman. Michael and I were developing a feature film together and one day he said to me, “When something haunts me, I write about it.” He then told me a story about a dark time in his life when he was living in New York City and felt completely hopeless and despondent.

    TRANSCULTURAL SPACES IN SUBCULTURE: An examination of multicultural dynamics in the Japanese visual kei movement Hayley Maxime Bhola 5615A031-9 January 10, 2017 A master’s thesis submitted to the Graduate School of International Culture and Communication Studies Waseda University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts TRANSCULTURAL SPACES IN SUBCULTURE 2 Abstract of the Dissertation The purpose of this dissertation was to examine Japanese visual kei subculture through the theoretical lens of transculturation. Visual kei (ヴィジュアル系) is a music based subculture that formed in the late 1980’s in Japan with bands like X Japan, COLOR and Glay. Bands are recognized by their flamboyant (often androgynous appearances) as well as their theatrical per- formances. Transculturation is a term originally coined by ethnographer Fernando Ortiz in re- sponse to the cultural exchange that took place during the era of colonization in Cuba. It de- scribes the process of cultural exchange in a way that implies mutual action and a more even dis- tribution of power and control over the process itself. This thesis looked at transculturation as it relates to visual kei in two main parts. The first was expositional: looking at visual kei and the musicians that fall under the genre as a product of transculturation between Japanese and non- Japanese culture. The second part was an effort to label visual kei as a transcultural space that is able to continue the process of transculturation by fostering cultural exchange and development among members within the subculture in Japan. Chapter 1 gave a brief overview of the thesis and explains the motivation behind conduct- ing the research.

    CORK SLIGO DUBLIN GALWAY LIMERICK DUNDALK MAYNOOTH WATERFORD WELCOME TO THE JAPANESE FILM FESTIVAL 2017 The Embassy of Japan is delighted that our collaboration with Access>Cinema has now reached its ninth year, thanks to the support of the Ireland Japan Association and the Japan Foundation. Even though over 500 films are made in Japan each year, many of them are never released overseas. Thanks to the tireless work of the team at Access>Cinema we have another incredible line up of films. In 2017 we celebrate the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between Japan and Ireland. The celebrations kicked off in January with the visit of Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida to Ireland, which Irish Foreign Minister Charles Flanagan reciprocated in February. The Japanese Film Festival is one of the highlights of the ongoing celebrations. This year’s films will open a door on Japanese life. Her Love Boils Bathwater won a Best Actress Award, at the 40th Japan Academy Awards, in addition to Best Supporting Actress and Best Rookie. The festival’s prestigious line up continues with Japan’s entry to the 2017 Oscars, Nagasaki: Memories of My Son starring Kazunari Ninomiya, star of Japanese boy band Arashi. One of the most unique titles is Happy Hour, a 5 hour highlight which won the Best Actress Award at the Locarno Festival. Of course there is the usual selection of anime titles, including a special preview of Sword Art Online The Movie. We are delighted to have a total of 21 different titles at this year’s Festival showing in Cork, Limerick, Galway, Dundalk, Waterford, Sligo, Maynooth and Dublin.

Though he hasn't performed publicly in three decades, Walker writes and performs original albums roughly every 10 years.
