Dear Trojan Nation,

It is with great anticipation we start the 2020 Trinity Women’s Soccer season and train young student-athletes in developing both on and off the field. It is a privilege to be a part of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference as it is one of the stronger conferences in the NAIA. With this, our student athletes face excellent competition and have the opportunity to grow through adversity and develop skills that they can take with them the rest of their lives.

Trinity is an NAIA school, which means that sport is much more than having success on the field. The NAIA strives to build into student-ath- Heather Logue - Director of Athletics letes skills they can take with them for the rest of their lives through their Champions of Character program. At the heart of this program are five core values: •Integrity •Respect •Responsibility •Sportsmanship •Servant leadership

It is our desire for every student-athlete to grow and develop in the core values of the NAIA.

We are also part of the NCCAA (National Christian College Athletic Asso- ciation) where we believe: •Athletics are a means to an end, not the end in themselves •The process is as important as the performance •The person (student-athlete) is more important than the program

We are committed to equipping student-athletes and coaches to make a positive impact for Christ. Please join us in cheering on our Trinity Trojan Women’s Soccer team as they take the field this season. Thank you for your support!

In Christ, Heather Logue Director of Athletics 2 2019 Season Review

After an 11-7-3 season in 2018, with a conference tournament semifinal and NCCAA regional tournament appearance, the TIU women’s soccer program looked to return to the postseason under 23rd year head coach Patrick Gilliam.

The Trojans kicked off the 2019 season with a bang in a 14-0 rout of Lincoln Christian on the road, which saw five -dif ferent players score, including Lauren Henn with a hat trick. TIU would struggle in their next five games, only claiming victory once in a 4-1 win over York College.

After falling to St. Ambrose in their conference opener, Trinity rattled off four straight wins, including victories over Calumet St. Joseph, St. Xavier, Roosevelt, and 17th-ranked Trinity Christian. The Trojans would tie eventual conference champion and conference tournament Olivet Nazarene in late October, the only CCAC team to tie or defeat the Tigers that season.

Following a 3-1 win at Governors State, TIU’s offense would struggle in their final two matches of the regular season, failing to score against Robert Morris and Cardinal Stritch. The Trojans clinched the seventh-seed in the CCAC Tourna- ment and would fall in a rematch with Trinity Christian by a 1-0 score.

Sophomore Fatima Bustamante was selected to the CCAC All-Conference Second Team, and also earned NCCAA Third Team All-American honors. Bustamante, along with Hannah Fuchs and Kailynd Tubb also received NCCAA North-Central All-Region honors. Academically, ten Trojans were named to the CCAC All-Academic Team, with four NCCAA Scholar-Athletes being selected.

2020 Preview

While the start of the 2020 TIU women’s soccer season is delayed until mid-February due to the COVID-19 pan- demic, the level of competition the Trojans are facing is expected to be challenging as ever.

Trinity returns 22 players from their roster from the 2019 campaign including all-conference defender Fatima Bustamante, and All-NCCAA Region midfielder Kailynd Tubb. Five new faces join the TIU roster as in Zoe Vil- lont, Payton Siragusa, Morgan Busick, Abigail Olsson and Nicole Boudakh.

TIU will open their 24th season under head coach Patrick Gilliam on February 13 as they host Lincoln College for the first time in school history. The Trojans open CCAC play one week later on February 20 at home against Gover- nors State. After a non-conference matchup with Indiana University Northwest, Trinity will travel to Davenport, Iowa to take on the St. Ambrose Fighting Bees.

March will feature six home matches, including a March 25 meeting against Lincoln Christian in non-conference action and a March 31 match-up with the defending CCAC champions Olivet Nazarene on senior day. Trinity will close the regular season at Judson on April 3. The CCAC Tournament will be held April 6-10 with the top-four seeded teams hosting first round matches.

5 Schartner Field

The home field of Trojan men’s and women’s soccer, Schartner Field is named in honor of longtime TIU coach Mark Schartner.

Schartner became the head men’s soccer coach at Trinity in 1973, just a year after earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education Teaching and Coaching from TIU. In 13 seasons at the helm of the Tro -jan men’s soccer program, Schartner led Trinity to over 67 wins and the university’s first taste of the national spotlight.

Schartner coached the Trojans to the

1974 NCCAA National Championship, the first national title in any sport in school history. He also led TIU to four NIIC conference titles during his tenure, with three total NCCAA Tournament appearances, including nearly winning another national title in 1979.

In addition to his work as men’s soccer coach, Schartner also coached a number of sports for the Trojans, in- cluding baseball from 1979 to 1983, wrestling in the 1970’s, and golf in the 1980’s.

Schartner Field has been seen as one of the toughest venues to play at in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference (CCAC) for both visiting men’s and women’s teams. A natural grass surface, opponents have bat- tled through intense games against TIU while also at times having to battle the elements of nature.

Since 1998, the Trojan women’s team has won five CCAC Tournament championships and three regular season conference crowns while calling Schartner Field home.

Three NCCAA National Players of the Year, three CCAC Players of the Year, two NCCAA North-Central Region Players of the Year, one NCCAA Regional Freshman of the Year, 25 NAIA All-Americans, 21 NCCAA All-Americans, 53 CCAC All-Conference honors, 21 NCCAA All-Region players, and 15 NAIA All-Region awards have graced the field for TIU.

6 Trojans Women’s Soccer Coaching Staff

Patrick Gilliam was named head coach of the Trinity International Unversity women’s soccer team in 1997, and has been one of the most successful coaches in the sport.

With a career record of 328-153-27 record in 23 seasons, Gilliam is currently the third winningest NAIA women’s soccer coach in history, as well as the third winningest active NAIA women’s soccer coach.

In 23 years at the helm of the women’s program, Gilliam has compiled an impressive list of achievements as coach, leading TIU to two NCCAA National Championships (1998, 2004), eight NCCAA Tournaments, four NCCAA Regional Championships, six NAIA Tourn ments, three NAIA Regional Championships, three CCAC regular season titles, and five CCAC Tournament titles.

In 2015, the Trojans claimed their fifth CCAC Tournament crown of the Gilliam era, which culminated in a 1-0 victory over No. 17 Olivet Nazarene on their home field in the final. HEAD COACH Patrick Gilliam The Trojans earned their fourth CCAC Tournament championship in 2013, as Trinity upset three teams with better records on their home fields to claim the title. That season, TIU (24th Season) returned to the NAIA Women’s Soccer National Championship for the first time since 2001, and finished the season ranked No. 25 in the final NAIA Coaches Poll.

The Trinity women’s soccer program has now tallied 11 consecutive seasons without earning a single red card.

A number of Trojan athletes have found success under Gilliam. 2016 graduate Morgan Elzinga was named an NAIA All-American as well as the NCCAA North Central Region Player of the Year, while a total of five Trojans earned All-CCAC honors. In 2018, Heather Ortiz was honored on the national stage being named All-CCAC 2nd Team, NCCAA North Central All-Region, as well as NCCAA 1st Team All-American.

Striker Samantha Yasatan-Miller became the first player to be named an NAIA All-American since 1999, after setting the TIU single-season record for goals with 29 in 2014. Missy Loretto was also honored that season as the first Trojan student-athlete to be named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America Team for her successes both athletically and academically.

Collectively, Gilliam has coached three NCCAA national, three CCAC, two NCCAA region, and one NCCAA freshman of the year players, as well as 25 NAIA All-American, 21 NCCAA All-American, 53 CCAC All-Conference, 21 NCCAA All-Region, and 15 NAIA All-Region players. Academically, 62 NAIA and 28 NCCAA Scholar-Athletes have been honored, as well as 61 CCAC All-Ac- ademic members. The women’s soccer team has also received the CCAC’s Karl Boeck Champions of Character Award five times for best sportsmanship in the conference.

Gilliam has also earned a collection of individual honors as a coach. Most recently, he was named the 2019 USC Faith-Based Jewel Award recipient. Gilliam was inducted into the NCCAA Hall of Fame in 2016, and has also earned the 2014 NCCAA Frank Jewel Award, a pair of NCCAA Women’s Soccer Coach of the Year Awards (1998, 2004), both the NSCAA Midwest and CCAC Coach of the Year awards in 1999, and three NCCAA Regional Coach of the Year honors.

Gilliam currently serves as Associate Director of Athletics at TIU, a position he’s held since 2018. He also held previous positions at Trinity including two stints as head men’s soccer coach from 1996-1999 and again from 2008-2017, as well as Director of Athletics from 2000-2008.

An alum of Judson College, Gilliam earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in 1991. He played as a four-year member of the Judson men’s soccer team, earning all-conference honors as a junior, and playing on two NCCAA National Tournament qualify- ing teams.

Patrick currently resides in Wheeling, with wife Holly, and has two children, Ian, a 2017 TIU graduate, and Emma, a current TIU student. 7 Gilliam Head Coaching Career (records included 2006-2019)
