  • Perceived Training Load, Muscle Soreness, Stress, Fatigue, and Sleep Quality in Professional Basketball: a Full Season Study
Journal of Human Kinetics volume 67/2019, 199-207 DOI: 10.2478/hukin-2019-0002 199 Section III – Sports Training Perceived Training Load, Muscle Soreness, Stress, Fatigue, and Sleep Quality in Professional Basketball: A Full Season Study by Filipe Manuel Clemente1,2, Bruno Mendes3, Sarah da Glória Teles Bredt4, Gibson Moreira Praça4, André Silvério5, Sandro Carriço5, Emanuel Duarte5 This study aimed to compare the perceived training load (session-RPE) and wellness status (muscle soreness, stress, fatigue, and sleep quality) within and between regular (one-match) and congested (two matches) weeks. Fifteen professional basketball players from a European First league club participated in this study. Wellness status (Hooper’s questionnaire) and perceived training loads (session-RPE) were measured for each training session and matches over a full season. Regular weeks presented moderately greater session-RPE than congested weeks (p = 0.201; d = 2.15, moderate effect). Both regular and congested weeks presented a decrease in perceived training load before matches, which was accompanied by improved wellness status on a match day. Congested weeks presented moderately lower sleep quality (p = 0.421; d = 1.320, moderate effect) and moderately greater fatigue (p = 0.468; d = 1.401, moderate effect) than regular weeks. Regular and congested weeks presented minimum differences for DOMS and stress. Lower wellness in congested weeks may be associated to an accumulative effect of training and match loads. Tapering phases before matches seem to play an important role for improving athletes’ wellness and preventing overtraining. Key words: training monitoring, load, well-being, basketball, congested fixture. • Spatiotemporal Analysis of Australian Rules Football
SPATIOTEMPORAL ANALYSIS OF AUSTRALIAN RULES FOOTBALL Bartholomew Spencer Institute for Health and Sport (IHeS) Victoria University, Melbourne, Australia Principal Supervisor: Assoc. Prof. Sam Robertson Associate Supervisors: Assoc. Prof. Stuart Morgan, Prof. John Zeleznikow Thesis submitted in fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy April 2019 i ii Abstract Player tracking data has previously been used to quantify movement profiles in the Australian Football League (AFL), however little research exists into its use to measure the spatial interactions of players. This thesis presents new methodologies for measuring the spatial interactions and occupancy of players in team sports. Global positioning systems (GPS) and local positioning systems (LPS) spatiotemporal datasets were sourced from training sessions, Under-18s matches and elite-level AFL matches. Datasets were consolidated with play-by-play transactions to infer ball position. An initial pilot study investigated the relative importance of traditional performance indicators to inform the focus of later studies. Subsequent chapters investigated the relative phase of inter- and intra-team player couples and multiple approaches to the measurement of the spatial control of individuals. Gaussian mixture models (GMM) were used to estimate the density of player groups in order to analyse changes in congestion throughout a match. Player motion models fit on player displacements were combined with a measure of field equity to value the passing decisions of players. A new approach to player motion models was developed by fitting the weighted distributions of player commitment to contest events. The resultant models more realistically explain player behaviour in proximity to the ball. The models were used to measure the spatial control of teams, from which the spatial characteristics of passes in the AFL were extracted.

  • Critical Review of Euroleague Basketball's Financial Stability and Fair Play
Critical Review of Euroleague Basketball’s Financial Stability and Fair Play (FSFP) Regulations Can the stated objectives be achieved? 2nd Report Author - Cem C Karamürsel Date – June 20, 2017 Content . Introduction . Current Situation & Relevant Facts . Critical Assessment of the FSFP Criteria . Key Conclusions & Comments . Suggestions for Improvement 20.06.2017 © Cem C Karamürsel 2 Introduction Since the beginning of 1990s, European basketball has gone through a quite turbulent period experiencing major structural and economic challenges, mainly caused by (i) deficit of demand (especially compared to football), (ii) certain governance issues (e.g. FIBA vs ULEB/Euroleague), and (iii) lack of a rational and sustainable economic model. Failure in creating and establishing such a model led to the situation that some traditional teams with a very successful history (such as Limoges, Benetton Basket, Kinder Bologna and more recently Montepaschi Siena and so on) have disappeared from the top-level European competition. Without any doubt, since its inception, Euroleauge Basketball has achieved quite a remarkable progress in enhancing the commercial value of the top-level European basketball league and significantly increasing the competition’s revenues. However, it still cannot be argued that the operating model of European basketball is now based on economically sound and rational principles & practices. In an effort to strengthen the financial stability of its clubs and to improve its financial governance model, Euroleague Basketball enacted its Financial Stability and Fair Play Regulations (FSFP). In this study, we perform a critical review of the financial criteria as set out in the FSFP rules (as stated in 2016-2017 Bylaws), both from an economic and legal perspective, also considering the “current reality” in European Basketball.
