SOFT POWER PLAYED ON THE HARDWOOD United States Diplomacy through Basketball by Joseph B. Eyen Dr. Nigel Boyle, Political Studies, Pitzer College Dr. Geoffrey Herrera, Political Studies, Pitzer College A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honors in Political Studies Pitzer College Claremont, California 4 May 2015 2 ABSTRACT This thesis demonstrates the importance of basketball as a form of soft power and a diplomatic asset to better achieve American foreign policy, which is defined and referred to as basketball diplomacy. Basketball diplomacy is also a lens to observe the evolution of American power from 1893 through present day. Basketball connects and permeates foreign cultures and effectively disseminates American influence unlike any other form of soft power, which is most powerfully illustrated by the United States’ basketball relationship with China. American basketball diplomacy will become stronger and connect with more countries with greater influence, and exist without relevant competition, until the likely rise of China in the indefinite future.

This association was created 82 years ago by visionaries and developed by indi- viduals unified by a common mission. Of course, the world has changed over time and to disre- gard the current economy would be fatal. This is undoubtedly the major challenge for the coming years. Addressing it will require men and women who, without losing sight of our founding princi- ples, can also provide new solutions. The required solidarity in a world defined by inequalities is the vital spark igniting FIBA’s humanist work.

Igor Vobič Somentor: doc. dr. Simon Ličen Simbolna anihilacija žensk v diskurzu športnega novinarstva Magistrsko delo Ljubljana, 2016 Tako. Zadnja pika je postavljena. Čas je za zahvalo. Najprej – hvala mentorju, doc. dr. Igorju Vobiču s Fakultete za družbene vede, in hvala somentorju, doc. dr. Simonu Ličnu z Washington State University, za pripombe in priporočila, kako to delo smiselno oblikovati v njegovo končno podobo. Hvala, ker ste mi stali ob strani vsa leta raziskovanja. Hvala, ker ste zaupali in verjeli.

  • Perceived Training Load, Muscle Soreness, Stress, Fatigue, and Sleep Quality in Professional Basketball: a Full Season Study
Journal of Human Kinetics volume 67/2019, 199-207 DOI: 10.2478/hukin-2019-0002 199 Section III – Sports Training Perceived Training Load, Muscle Soreness, Stress, Fatigue, and Sleep Quality in Professional Basketball: A Full Season Study by Filipe Manuel Clemente1,2, Bruno Mendes3, Sarah da Glória Teles Bredt4, Gibson Moreira Praça4, André Silvério5, Sandro Carriço5, Emanuel Duarte5 This study aimed to compare the perceived training load (session-RPE) and wellness status (muscle soreness, stress, fatigue, and sleep quality) within and between regular (one-match) and congested (two matches) weeks. Fifteen professional basketball players from a European First league club participated in this study. Wellness status (Hooper’s questionnaire) and perceived training loads (session-RPE) were measured for each training session and matches over a full season. Regular weeks presented moderately greater session-RPE than congested weeks (p = 0.201; d = 2.15, moderate effect). Both regular and congested weeks presented a decrease in perceived training load before matches, which was accompanied by improved wellness status on a match day. Congested weeks presented moderately lower sleep quality (p = 0.421; d = 1.320, moderate effect) and moderately greater fatigue (p = 0.468; d = 1.401, moderate effect) than regular weeks. Regular and congested weeks presented minimum differences for DOMS and stress. Lower wellness in congested weeks may be associated to an accumulative effect of training and match loads. Tapering phases before matches seem to play an important role for improving athletes’ wellness and preventing overtraining. Key words: training monitoring, load, well-being, basketball, congested fixture. Introduction 1000 movements that change every 2 s (Abdelkrim The individualization of a training process et al., 2007; Erculj et al., 2008; Klusemann et al., depends on the appropriate assessment of athletes’ 2013; Michalczyk et al., 2018).
