First of all, Bart is a winner, an achiever, and an incredible young man. I affectionately refer to him as my fourth son. He doesn’t just talk a good line—he goes to work and brings his ideas to fruition. I have known Bart Baggett since he was a mere freshman in college. We met because our names were side-by-side in the Malibu telephone directory under handwriting experts. I thought to myself “I must check out the competition.” We met for breakfast one morning and I think he was equally surprised by my age as I was by his youth. You see, I was already analyzing handwriting when he was just a boy. For over twenty years I have used that insight into the human equation, understanding and evaluating clients, friends, and intimates. We connected instantly at a level that surpassed any difference in age. I knew he was a friend I would come to trust and rely on. He has never let me down. I have a “leg up” when meeting new people through my knowledge of handwriting analysis. I immediately recognized that Bart Baggett was a vital force, by looking at his handwriting. He was a young man with a glint in his eye and a lot of missionary zeal in his projects. He was intelligence and motivation on the move! The second reason I am excited about writing the foreword is that Bart’s book, The Secrets To Making Love Happen reveals the secrets I wish I had known before I had my own first date, over half a century ago.

This dissertation challenges pessimistic readings of Woody Allen’s film that render love difficult, if not impossible. By challenging assumptions about love, this dissertation opens a dialogue not only about the representation of love, but the understanding of love.

  • Southern Silence and Sexual Violence: a Memoir and Cultural Analysis
Southern Silence and Sexual Violence: A Memoir and Cultural Analysis Alexandria K. Selman Faculty Advisor: Dr. Amy Laura Hall Duke Divinity School April 2019 This project was submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts in the Graduate Liberal Studies Program in the Graduate School of Duke University. Copyright by Alexandria K. Selman 2019 Abstract Southerners can easily be picked out by their thick accents and their choice of rhetoric, such as “Hey, Ya’ll” and “Bless your heart.” My southern rhetoric is more than the reason why I stand out in most crowds, but is the foundation of who I am, how I think, and how I navigate the world around me. As a native of rural Alabama, I grew up in a world of etiquette, red dirt, and gender roles. The experiences I share are those of upper-middle-class, white sorority women in Alabama who were the product of the South’s cultural silencing. The pervasive gender differences made between boys and girls by southern culture and the education system, has helped the ideology of sacred womanhood live on. This ideology leads women to believe their task in life is to remain clean of sexual impurity and be subservient to men. This submissive stance has affected the way these women communicate sexual violence and in turn deal with its long-term effects. This is a glimpse at the balancing act that is being a southerner, a woman, and a survivor. This work, nor my journey, is complete, but rather a work in progress.

From Making Love to Sexing: Historical Development of Sexual References in Popular Music 1960-2011 Claire Carden Spring 2012 Advisor: Nancy Bell English Department College of Liberal Arts ! TO THE UNIVERSITY HONORS COLLEGE: As thesis advisor for __________________________, I have read this paper and find it satisfactory. ______________________ Thesis Advisor __________________________ Date Precis This study examines changes in sexual references in lyrics by focusing on the number of references and the language used in the sexual reference. The corpus was made up of 1168 sexual references. Each reference was classified into references to sex acts (e.g., oral, anal or vaginal sex, etc.; N= 610), to body parts (i.e., ass, pussy, etc.; N= 127), to terms of reference or address (i.e., baby momma, lover, etc.; N= 220) or to other sexual behaviors (i.e., rape, prostitution, etc.; N= 211). Only one paper that looks directly at change in lyrics over time is Hall et al (2011). Their approach differs from mine in purpose and thus focus. They did not examine the change in type of sexual references over time. My data sample for this paper is the lyrics from the top-ranked songs on the Billboard weekly listing, selecting the top song for the first week of each month from 1960 through 2011 (610 songs). I found that there have been many changes since 1960, both quantitatively and qualitatively. There has been an increase in the number of sexual references since 1960. The vast majority of the sex act references (441 out of 610) were references to vaginal sex; the first non-vaginal reference was a reference to manual stimulation in 1972.

TITLE Media Portrayals of Love, Marriage & Sexuality for Child Audiences: A Select Content Analysis of Walt Disney Animated Family Films. PUB DATE Apr 97 NOTE 13p.; Paper presented at the Biennial Meeting of the Society for Research in Child Development (62nd, Washington, DC, April 3-6, 1997). DESCRIPTORS Animation; Children; *Films; *Love; *Marriage; Mass Media Role; *Sex Differences; Sex Role; Sexual Harassment; *Sexuality; Violence IDENTIFIERS *Childrens Films; *Romantic Relationship; Walt Disney Studios ABSTRACT This study examined the portrayal of love, marriage, and sexuality in 11 romantic and nonromantic Disney animated films. Results showed that four out of five of the nonromantic films had male leads, with males occupying significantly more screen time than females. Half of the romantic films had female leads, who occupied significantly more screen time than males. More lead characters suffered from mother absence than father absence, wherever parental presence could be determined. Females were more often depicted sexually and engaged in passive love-related roles than were males. Males engaged in active love-related, stereotyped roles and made more references to marriage and weddings than did females. Love-related and sexually-related portrayals have increased in recent romantic films of the 1990s, compared to films of the 1950s. A comparable number of or even fewer references to marriage were made in recent films than in films of the 1950s. The two lesser known films, "The Three Caballeros" and "Bongo," had themes involving sexual harassment and physical violence.
