The device, a radio remote controlled boat, was roughly three feet in length with blinking antennae and was propelled by a small motor and rudder. At the Exposition, Tesla directed audience members to ask the device mathematical questions, and it would respond by blinking the lights on its antennae an appropriate number of times. Tesla’s display gave the illusion of an automaton; moving independently and mysteriously responding to mathematical questions with no apparent operator. Tesla and his telautomaton were at the intersection of major developments of nineteenth and early twentieth century physiology and physics. Thomas Henry Huxley, a physiologist, stimulated a debate among scientists about the extent human automatism. These debates centered on developments in physiology that suggested that there was no place for the soul in the brain; no energy was lost, and even with brain damage humans were able to function. The absence of energy loss created a ii problem in conservation of energy in physics. Some physicists were involved in this debate, attempting to determine whether any energy was lost or added as a result of free will. Yet, all physicists were involved in a debate about the form of the ether, a medium that theoretically permeated everything. Electromagnetic waves, including the radio waves that controlled the movement of Tesla’s telautomaton, were predicted to pass through the ether, a medium that permeated everything. The theories of some of these physicists attempted to combine ideas on the ether on communication between body and mind. Tesla attempted to synthesize several theories on the ether and eventually developed his own. His involvement with electrical healing experiments paralleled experiments in electrical mesmerism carried out by some British physicists that took an interest in psychical research. Tesla’s telautomaton highlights the research in communication carried out at the turn of the century; communication between mind and body, through telegraphs and through spiritual mediums. iii The dissertation of Kendall Milar Thompson is approved. He emigrated in 1884 to the United States, where he became a naturalized citizen. He worked for a short time at the Edison Machine Works in New York City before he struck out on his own. With the help of partners to finance and market his ideas, Tesla set up laboratories and companies in New York to develop a range of electrical and mechanical devices. His alternating current (AC) induction motor and related polyphase AC patents, licensed by Westinghouse Electric in 1888, earned him a considerable amount of money and became the cornerstone of the polyphase system which that company eventually marketed.

Built 1925-27; Emery Roth, architect, with Thomas Hastings. Landmark Site: Borough of Manhattan Tax Map Block 1312, Lot 70. On July 16, 2002 the Landmarks Preservation Commission held a public hearing on the proposed designation as a Landmark of the Ritz Tower, and the proposed designation of the related Landmark Site (Item No.2). The hearing had been advertised in accordance with provisions of law. Ross Moscowitz, representing the owners of the cooperative spoke in opposition to designation. At the time of designation, he took no position. Mark Levine, from the Jamestown Group, representing the owners of the commercial space, took no position on designation at the public hearing. Bill Higgins represented these owners at the time of designation and spoke in favor. Three witnesses testified in favor of designation, including representatives of State Senator Liz Kruger, the Landmarks Conservancy and the Historic Districts Council. In addition, the Commission has received letters in support of designation from Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney, from Community Board Five, and from architectural hi storian, John Kriskiewicz.     An Electric Battle A WebQuest for War of the Currents Introduction At the turn of the twentieth century, the War of the Currents had a clear winner—Tesla and his alternating current. However, direct current survived into the twenty-first century. As recently as 2007, some parts of Manhattan were finally converted to alternating current. The transition from direct current to alternating current begin in the late 1920s but took decades, in part, because the foundation of New York City’s energy grid was build by Edison’s company. Task Your task is to research the everyday devices credited to Edison and Tesla. You will compare these inventor’s influences by creating a script for a 5-min mock “debate” between Edison and Tesla in which they debate their influences on today’s and future technology. Process Use the resources listed in the Resources section to begin your research. The Web sites listed are good starting points, but further Internet research will be necessary. Record your answers to the following questions. 1. What was the relationship between Tesla and Edison prior to the War of the Currents? 2. Both Tesla and Edison were prolific inventors. If the two were competing to obtain the most number of patents filed, who wins and by what margin? 3.     War of Currents In the War of Currents era (sometimes, War of the Currents or Battle of Currents) in the late 1880s, George Westinghouse and Thomas Edison became adversaries due to Edison's promotion of direct current (DC) for electric power distribution over alternating current (AC). Edison's direct-current system generated and distributed electric power at the same voltage as used by the customer's lamps and motors. This meant that the current in transmission was relatively large, and so heavy conductors were required and transmission distances were limited, to about a mile (kilometre); otherwise transmission losses would make the system uneconomical. At the time, no method was practical for changing voltages of DC power. The invention of an efficient transformer allowed high voltage to be used for AC transmission. An AC generating plant could then serve customers at a great distance (tens to hundreds of miles), or could serve more customers within its economical transmission distance. The fewer much larger plants needed for AC would achieve an economy of scale that would lower costs further. The invention of a practical AC motor increased the usefulness of alternating current for powering machinery. Edison's company had invested heavily in DC technology and was vigorously defending its DC based patents. George Westinghouse saw AC as a way to get into the business with his own patented competing system and set up the Westinghouse Electric Company to design and build it. The Westinghouse company also purchased the patents for alternating current devices from inventors in Europe and licensed patents from Nikola Tesla.

    Incoming Correspondence of Mary Baker Eddy (Formerly Chestnut Hill File) Collection Description Correspondence, c. 1880–1910 This collection consists mainly of letters received by Mary Baker Eddy and members of her household from c. 1880–1910. A small quantity of correspondence also predates and postdates this time span. Comments, notations, and responses by Eddy or her staff also appear on some documents. Correspondents include family, students, employees, Christian Scientists, the general public, and a few notable figures such as journalist Arthur Brisbane and suffragist Susan B. Anthony. There are approximately 6,700 correspondent files, many consisting of one letter (see finding aid for complete list). It is likely that her personal secretary, Calvin A. Frye, organized this file with assistance from other secretaries in later years. The name Chestnut Hill File derives from Mary Baker Eddy’s last home in Chestnut Hill, MA, where the file was located until it was moved to The First Church of Christ, Scientist sometime after 1915. Because of confusion about the scope and content of the file–it is not correspondence only from the time Eddy lived at Chestnut Hill, nor is it material about Chestnut Hill or the home located there–the file has been renamed to reflect what the file does contain, Eddy’s incoming correspondence. Zivotofsky Accepted: 1 July 2011 / Published online: 15 July 2011 Ó Springer Science+Business Media B.V. 2011 Abstract Human beings have engaged in animal husbandry and have slaughtered animals for food for thousands of years. During the majority of that time most societies had no animal welfare regulations that governed the care or slaughter of animals. Judaism is a notable exception in that from its earliest days it has included such rules. Among the Jewish dietary laws is a prohibition to consume meat from an animal that dies in any manner other than through the rigorously defined method of slaughter known as shechita. In recent decades more and more attempts have been initiated by governments around the world to either outright ban or to control and modify the practice of shechita. This paper presents the requisite background about shechita and then analyzes the ethics of some of the recent legislation. The analysis includes a rebuttal of the assertion that shechita is an inhumane method of slaughter. It further presents the consequences on the Jewish community of legislation to impose pre-slaughter stunning and explains why such legislation is unethical. The actual effect of labeling laws is discussed and it is shown why such laws are also un- ethical.
